Foams in contact with solid boundaries: equilibrium conditions and conformal invariance

Abstract:A liquid foam in contact with a solid surface forms a two-dimensional foam on the surface. We derive the equilibrium equations for this 2D foam when the solid surface is curved and smooth, generalising the standard case of flat Hele Shaw cells. The equilibrium conditions at the vertices in 2D, at the edges in 3D, are invariant by conformal transformations. Regarding the films, conformal invariance only holds with restrictions, which we explicit for 3D and flat 2D foams. Considering foams confined in thin interstices between two non parallel plates, normal incidence and Laplace's law lead to an approximate equation relating the plate profile to the conformal map. Solutions are given for the logarithm and power laws in the case of constant pressure. The paper concludes on a comparison with available experimental data.

Abstract:The interaction of ultrashort intense laser pulses with plasma can produce electromagnetic radiation of ultra-broad spectra ranging from terahertz (THz) radiation to keV x-rays and beyond. Here we present a review of our recent theoretical and numerical investigation on high power THz generation from tenuous plasma or gas targets irradiated by ultrashort intense laser pulses. Three mechanisms of THz emission are addressed, which include the linear mode conversion from laser wakefields in inhomogeneous plasma, transient current emission at the plasma-vacuum boundaries, and the emission from residual transverse currents produced by temporally-asymmetric laser pulses passing through gas or plasma targets. Since there is no breakdown limit for plasma under the irradiation of high power lasers, in principle, all these mechanisms can lead to terahertz pulse emission at the power of beyond megawatt with the field strength of MV/cm, suitable for the study of high THz field physics and other applications.

Abstract:Powerful terahertz (THz) radiation is observed from large-scale underdense preplasmas in front of a solid target irradiated obliquely with picosecond relativistic intense laser pulses. The radiation covers an extremely broad spectrum with about 70% of its energy located in the high frequency regime over 10 THz. The pulse energy of the radiation is found to be above 100 mu J per steradian in the laser specular direction at an optimal preplasma scale length around 40-50 mu m. Particle-in-cell simulations indicate that the radiation is mainly produced by linear mode conversion from electron plasma waves, which are excited successively via stimulated Raman scattering instability and self-modulated laser wakefields during the laser propagation in the preplasma. This radiation can be used not only as a powerful source for applications, but also as a unique diagnostic of parametric instabilities of laser propagation in plasmas.
On the Radiation Fields of Fast Radio Bursts Close to Sources

Abstract:Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are coherent powerful radio transients with cosmological origins. The detected galactic FRB reveals that magnetars can generate FRBs, however the mechanism still remains enigmatic. Characteristics of FRBs are limited to observable quantities such as luminosity, duration, spectrum and repetition etc. Due to the uncertainties of triggering mechanisms and source sites within or out of magnetospheres of neutron stars, status of FRBs close to their sources are unknown. As an extreme astronomical event, FRBs could accompany with energy-comparable or even more powerful x/γ-ray counterparts. Here, we study the interaction of ultrastrong radio pulses in GHz and high-energy photons in GeV. Particle-in-cell simulations show that at the field-strength of about 3 × 10V/cm, quantum cascade effects can generate dense pair plasmas and the radio pulses are significantly depleted. Therefore, GHz radio pulses of stronger than 3 × 10V/cm is difficult to escape from emitters if accompanying with GeV photons. This process could afford a limit to the FRB field strength nearby sources. Investigation on the toleration of ∼ 10 V/cm radio waves for potential plasma/beam emitters in neutron-star scenerios should be helpful to distinguish the precise mechanism of FRBs.

Abstract:The prompt emissions of gamma-ray bursts are seeded by radiating ultrarelativistic electrons. Internal shocks propagating through a jet launched by a stellar implosion, are expected to amplify the magnetic field & accelerate electrons. We explore the effects of density asymmetry & a quasi-parallel magnetic field on the collision of plasma clouds. A 2D relativistic PIC simulation models the collision of two plasma clouds, in the presence of a quasi-parallel magnetic field. The cloud density ratio is 10. The densities of ions & electrons & the temperature of 131 keV are equal in each cloud. The mass ratio is 250. The peak Lorentz factor of the electrons is determined, along with the orientation & strength of the magnetic field at the cloud collision boundary. The magnetic field component orthogonal to the initial plasma flow direction is amplified to values that exceed those expected from shock compression by over an order of magnitude. The forming shock is quasi-perpendicular due to this amplification, caused by a current sheet which develops in response to the differing deflection of the incoming upstream electrons & ions. The electron deflection implies a charge separation of the upstream electrons & ions; the resulting electric field drags the electrons through the magnetic field, whereupon they acquire a relativistic mass comparable to the ions. We demonstrate how a magnetic field structure resembling the cross section of a flux tube grows in the current sheet of the shock transition layer. Plasma filamentation develops, as well as signatures of orthogonal magnetic field striping. Localized magnetic bubbles form. Energy equipartition between the ion, electron & magnetic energy is obtained at the shock transition layer. The electronic radiation can provide a seed photon population that can be energized by secondary processes (e.g. inverse Compton).

Heliospheric Origin of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:Systematic variations of average observational characteristics and correlation properties between different parameters of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with time from 1991 April to 1994 September are revealed. It is hard to explain the observed long-term variability by variations of experimental conditions. The variability of GRB properties with the time scale of months to years, together with the similarity between GRBs, solar hard X-ray flares and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, may indicate an origin of GRBs, at least partly, within the heliosphere. Large-voltage and high-temperature pinch plasma columns produced by disruptive electrical discharges in the outer heliosphere can generate hard X-ray and gamma-ray flashes with energy spectra and spectral evolution characters consistent with that observed in GRBs.

Abstract:We study afterglow flares of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the framework of the late internal shock (LIS) model based on a careful description for the dynamics of a pair of shocks generated by a collision between two homogeneous shells. First, by confronting the model with some fundamental observational features of X-ray flares, we find some constraints on the properties of the pre-collision shells that are directly determined by the central engine of GRBs. Second, high-energy emission associated with X-ray flares, which arises from synchrotron self-Compton emission of LISs, is investigated in a wide parameter space. The predicted flux of high-energy flares may reach as high as similar to 10(-8) erg cm(-2) s(-1), which is likely to be detectable with the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi Space Telescope (formerly GLAST).

Abstract:We present Particle-in-Cell simulation results of relativistic shear flows for hybrid positron-electron-ion plasmas and compare to those for pure e+e- and pure e-ion plasmas. Among the three types of relativistic shear flows, we find that only hybrid shear flow is able to energize the electrons to form a high-energy spectral peak plus a hard power-law tail. Such electron spectra are needed to model the observational properties of gamma-ray bursts.

Abstract:The promising ability of a plasma wiggler based on laser wakefield acceleration to produce betatron X-rays with photon energies of a few keV to hundreds of keV and a peak brilliance of 10 22 –10 23 photons/s/mm 2 /mrad 2 /0.1%BW has been demonstrated, providing an alternative to large-scale synchrotron light sources. Most methods for generating betatron radiation are based on two typical approaches, one relying on an inherent transverse focusing electrostatic field, which induces transverse oscillation, and the other relying on the electron beam catching up with the rear part of the laser pulse, which results in strong electron resonance. Here, we present a new regime of betatron γ-ray radiation generated by stimulating a large-amplitude transverse oscillation of a continuously injected electron bunch through the hosing of the bubble induced by the carrier envelope phase (CEP) effect of the self-steepened laser pulse. Our method increases the critical photon energy to the MeV level, according to the results of particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The highly collimated, energetic and femtosecond γ-ray bursts that are produced in this way may provide an interesting potential means of exploring nuclear physics in table top photo nuclear reactions.
Plasmoid-mediated reconnection in solar UV bursts

Abstract:UV bursts are transients in the solar atmosphere with an increased impulsive emission in the extreme UV lasting for one to several tens of minutes. They often show spectral profiles indicative of a bi-directional outflow in response to magnetic reconnection. To understand UV bursts, we study how motions of magnetic elements at the surface can drive the self-consistent formation of a current sheet resulting in plasmoid-mediated reconnection. In particular, we want to study the role of the height of the reconnection in the atmosphere. We conducted numerical experiments solving the 2D MHD equations from the solar surface to the upper atmosphere. Motivated by observations, we drove a small magnetic patch embedded in a larger system of magnetic field of opposite polarity. This configuration creates an X-type neutral point in the initial potential field. The models are characterized by the plasma-beta at the height of this X point. The driving at the surface stretches the X-point into a current sheet, where plasmoids appear, and a bi-directional jet forms. This is consistent with what is expected for UV bursts or explosive events, and we provide a self-consistent model of the formation of the reconnection region in such events. The gravitational stratification gives an explanation for why explosive events are restricted to a temperature range around a few 0.1 MK, and the presence of plasmoids in the reconnection process provides an understanding of the observed variability during the transient events on a timescale of minutes. Our numerical experiments provide a comprehensive understanding of UV bursts and explosive events, in particular of how the atmospheric response changes if the reconnection happens at different plasma-beta, that is, at different heights in the atmosphere. This analysis also gives new insight into how UV bursts might be related to the photospheric Ellerman bombs.

Multiple X-ray bursts from long discharges in air

Abstract:A lightning surge generator generates a high voltage surge with 1.2 microsec. rise time. The generator fed a spark gap of two pointed electrodes at 0.7 to 1.2 m distances. Gap breakdown occurred between 0.1 and 3 microsec. after the maximum generator voltage of approximately 850 kV. Various scintillator detectors with different response time recorded bursts of hard radiation in nearly all surges. The bursts were detected over the time span between approximately half of the maximum surge voltage and full gap breakdown. The consistent timing of the bursts with the high-voltage surge excluded background radiation as source for the high intensity pulses. In spite of the symmetry of the gap, negative surges produced more intense radiation than positive. This has been attributed to additional positive discharges from the measurement cabinet which occurred for negative surges. Some hard radiation signals were equivalent to several MeV. Pile-up occurs of lesser energy X-ray quanta, but still with a large fraction of these with an energy of the order of 100 keV. The bursts occurred within the 4 nanosec. time resolution of the fastest detector. The relation between the energy of the X-ray quanta and the signal from the scintillation detector is quite complicated, as shown by the measurements.

Collisionless shock in a relativistically hot unmagnetized electron-positron plasma

Abstract:In this work, we investigate collisionless shocks propagating in a relativistically hot unmagnetized electron-positron plasmas. We estimate the dissipation fraction at shocks in the relativistically hot plasma, showing that it is sufficiently large to explain the observation of gamma-ray bursts even when the shock is not highly relativistic. It is shown by two-dimensional particle in cell simulations that magnetic fields are generated around the shock front by the Weibel instability, as in the cold upstream plasma. However, in contrast to the cold upstream plasma, no particles are accelerated at the shock in the simulation time of $t = 3600 \omega_p^{-1}$. The decay of the magnetic field in the downstream region is slower for slower shock velocities in the hot plasma cases. Applying the slow decay of the downstream magnetic field, we propose a model that generate magnetic fields in large downstream region, which is required from the standard model of the gamma-ray burst afterglow.

Abstract:High-energy positrons and bright γ-ray sources are of great importance both in fundamental research and for practical applications. However, collimated GeV electron–positron pair jets and γ-ray flashes are still rarely produced in the laboratory. Here, we demonstrate that by irradiating a near-critical-density plasma channel with two 10 PW-scale laser pulses, highly directional GeV electron–positron pairs and bright γ-ray beams can be efficiently generated. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show the formation of GeV positron jets with high density (8×1021/ cm3), attosecond duration (400 as), and a divergence angle of 14°. Additionally, ultrabright [2×1025 photons s−1 mm−2 mrad−2 (0.1% bandwidth)−1] collimated attosecond (370 as) γ-ray flashes with a laser energy conversion efficiency of 5.6% are emitted. These features show the significant advantage of using a plasma channel as compared with a uniform plasma and thus open up new possibilities for a wide variety of applications.

Abstract:In explaining the physical origin of the jet composition of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), a more general picture, i.e., the hybrid jet model (which introduced another magnetization parameter σ0 on the basis of the traditional fireball model), has been well studied in Gao & Zhang. However, it still has not yet been applied to a large GRB sample. Here, we first employ the “top-down” approach of Gao & Zhang to diagnose the photosphere properties at the central engine to see how the hybrid model can account for the observed data as well, through applying a Fermi GRB sample (eight bursts) with the detected photosphere component, as presented in Li (our Paper I). We infer all physical parameters of a hybrid problem with three typical values of the radius of the jet base (r0 = 107, 108, and 109 cm). We find that the dimensionless entropy for all the bursts shows η ≫ 1 while the derived (1+σ0) for five bursts (GRB 081224, GRB 110721A, GRB 090719, GRB 100707, and GRB 100724) is larger than unity, indicating that in addition to a hot fireball component, another cold Poynting-flux component may also play an important role. Our analysis also shows that in a few time bins for all r0 in GRB 081224 and GRB 110721A, the magnetization parameter at ∼1015 cm (1+σr15) is greater than unity, which implies that internal-collision-induced magnetic reconnection and turbulence may be the mechanism to power the nonthermal emission, rather than internal shocks. We conclude that the majority of bursts (probably all) can be well explained by the hybrid jet problem.
Flash-Heating of Circumstellar Clouds by Gamma Ray Bursts

Abstract:The blast-wave model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been called into question by observations of spectra from GRBs that are harder than can be produced through optically thin synchrotron emission. If GRBs originate from the collapse of massive stars, then circumstellar clouds near burst sources will be illuminated by intense gamma radiation, and the electrons in these clouds will be rapidly scattered to energies as large as several hundred keV. Low-energy photons that subsequently pass through the hot plasma will be scattered to higher energies, hardening the intrisic spectrum. This effect resolves the "line-of-death" objection to the synchrotron shock model. Illuminated clouds near GRBs will form relativistic plasmas containing large numbers of electron-positron pairs that can be detected within ~ 1-2 days of the explosion before expanding and dissipating. Localized regions of pair annihilation radiation in the Galaxy would reveal past GRB explosions.

Emission Processes of High Energy Gamma Rays from Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:Synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process in the reverse shocks of gamma-ray bursts is suggested to be responsible for the observed prompt high-energy gamma-ray emissions from several gamma-ray bursts. We find that the SSC emission from the reverse shocks dominates over other emission processes in energy bands from tens of MeV to tens of GeV, for a wide range of shock parameters. This model is favorable for escape of energetic photons from the emitting regions due to a lower internal pair-production optical depth, as the characteristic size of the reverse shock region is much larger than that of internal shocks. We predict that, in this model, the prompt high-energy emissions are correlated with the prompt optical flashes, which can be test in the forthcoming GLAST era.

Abstract:We present the results of 3-dimensional kinetic simulations and theoretical studies on the formation and evolution of the current sheet in a collisionless plasma during magnetic field annihilation in the ultra-relativistic limit. Annihilation of oppositively directed magnetic fields driven by two laser pulses interacting with underdense plasma target is accompanied by an electromagnetic burst generation. The induced strong non-stationary longitudinal electric field accelerates charged particles within the current sheet. Properties of the laser-plasma target configuration are discussed in the context of the laboratory modeling for charged particle acceleration and gamma flash generation in astrophysics.

Abstract:When a high-contrast ultra-relativistic laser beam enters a micro-sized plasma waveguide, the pulse energy is coupled into waveguide modes, which remarkably modifies the interaction of electrons and electromagnetic wave. The electrons that pulled out of walls form a dense helical bunch inside the channel are efficiently accelerated by the transverse magnetic modes to hundreds of MeVs. In the mean time, the asymmetry in the transverse electric and magnetic fields provides significant wiggling that leads to a bright, well-collimated emission of hard X-rays. In this paper, we present our study on the underlying physics in the aforementioned process using 3D particle-in-cell simulations. The mechanism of electron acceleration and the dependence of radiation properties on different laser plasma parameters are addressed. A theoretical analysis model and basic scalings for X-ray emission are also presented by considering the lowest optical modes in the waveguide, which is adequate to describe the basic observed phenomenon. In addition, the effects of high order modes as well as laser polarization are also qualitatively discussed. The considered X-ray source have promising features that might serve as a competitive candidate for future tabletop synchrotron source.
