Abstract:This paper briefly discusses the basic connotations and eight ideas of sustainable architecture. It proposes that we should adopt ecological strategy in architectural design. It also analyzes the five cases in engineering which have followed the ideas of sustainable architecture.

Abstract:This paper investigates ways of deploying ecological principles in the planning and design practice of landscape architecture. As a modern profession, one of the central tasks of landscape architecture is of protecting and recovering our environment. The profession is now in the demand in China, because of China’s rapid urban development and the consequent environmental problems. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area provides evidence of how the profession is carrying out such a task. The study also identifies the disconnection between ecological and cultural strategies for recovering a particular landscape.

Abstract:In recent years, the conflict between human activities and the natural environment has caused the deterioration of the natural environment and human settlements, forcing people to re-examine the relationship between man and nature and architecture and the natural environment. With the concept of sustainable development put forward, architects began to think about how to solve the impact of building on energy and environment from the root. The emergence of ecological building is based on this background, and traditional buildings ignore its ecological impact on the surrounding environment and internal micro environment, resulting in the fact that large numbers of existing green buildings are non-ecological. In view of this situation, this paper first from the ecological point of view expounds the dilemma of human survival due to the excessive destruction of the natural environment, takes architecture as the research scope, takes the ecological characteristics of green buildings as the starting point, and first analyses the impact of green buildings on the urban ecological environment from the perspective of urban design, combined with examples; the paper puts forward different ecological design strategies from the aspects of the preliminary design planning of green building, the design of each part of the building, the design of the internal environment of the building, and the ecological operation in the later stage of the building; sums up the ecological evaluation standards of green building; and finally prospects the development trend of ecological green building in the future.

Abstract:Today, when the concept of green and sustainable design has been deeply discussed in architecture, opinions vary on the extent to how the response to nature, ecology, and society integrates with architecture. In this issue, we specially invite Professor Wang Yuan from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Huazhong University of Science and Technology to have an in-depth conversation with Professor Song Yehao from the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University. Starting from the RSC Building in Hainan, the dialogue explores the perspective of architectural creation starting from ecology, the translation from ecology to architectural language, and the architectural concept of multidisciplinary overall design, which is both a speculative discussion of architecture, also a retrospective review of architectural creation practice.

Abstract:Digital technology and its use in architecture support the construction industry in transitioning to more sustainable building development. Digital technology is widely taught in architecture programs in China, but there are few consistent strategies for combining digital architectural design with traditional architectural design in architectural education. Consequently, sustainable design concepts are not included in digital architectural design courses, and thus architectural education is not concerned with sustainable development. In this paper, we focus on the teaching of digital design in architecture and investigate how digital architectural design teaching can incorporate sustainability. Data from 15 universities were qualitatively analyzed, leading to the development of four models of teaching digital architectural design. Development of the models revealed that there are three increasing levels in digital architectural design teaching and that there is a close relationship between the teaching level and the transfer of architectural knowledge. This recognition led to the development of a single comprehensive model of digital architectural design teaching that is universally applicable. This research increases our understanding of digital architectural design teaching in architecture programs and strengthens the multi-level connections between digital architectural design teaching and designing and constructing sustainable built objects.

Abstract:All kinds of Chinese traditional dwellings are naturally ecological architecture because of their coordination with environment and nature. Firstly, this paper describes the concept and meaning of Chinese traditional dwellings and ecological architecture, analyzes and summarizes the eco-design strategy of Chinese traditional dwellings, including combination with topography, adaptation to climatic, using local materials. Besides, discusses the architectural characteristics, such as patriarchal system concept, regional culture customs. By which, extends to the strategy of modern ecological architecture design, for instance, rooting in particular geographical environment, focusing on the regional cultural heritage and Keeping up with the Times Innovation opens up new ideas for further research and design of the ecological architecture.

Abstract:Sustainable architectural education is offered in colleges and universities all over the world. Studies have emphasized the importance of sustainable architectural education in introductory courses of architecture major programs, but methods and strategies for teaching sustainable architecture at lower levels are scarce. This study focuses on the design-to-physical-construction process and creates a teaching framework that incorporates the concept of sustainable development from the perspectives of sustainable economy, environment and society. Based on the teaching method of learning through the design-to-physical-construction process and referring to the grounded theory, a case study on a bamboo construction project was conducted to explore approaches and strategies of sustainable architectural education in introductory courses. Results reveal that five systems, including the system of sustainable development, consist of a framework that illustrated the teaching effects. Based on the framework, we discovered five factors that should be considered in incorporating the concept of sustainable development into architectural design teaching, including the necessity of conducting sustainable architectural education in introductory courses. This study helps explore the potential role sustainability plays in incorporating interdisciplinary knowledge, connecting specialized knowledge across different program levels, and motivating student learning. It also provides a reference for the practice of sustainable architectural education.

Abstract:Interior ecological design attaches great importance to the comfort and beauty in living environment, emphasizes to save the resource and protect the environment, advocates the resource-saving and recycling. The existing state of the interior ecological design in China is analyzed firstly in this paper, followed by the discussion of the whole design principle on interior ecological design, as well as the analysis on the changes of interior environment brought by the natural elements, which briefly explains the importance of the interior ecological design. The main idea and primary elements of interior ecological theory is to advocate the comfort and beauty as well as resource-saving and environment-protecting. From the angle of sustainable development, the author appeals that architecture, while benefiting the contemporaries, should leave a comfortable living space and promote sustainable development for the offspring.

Abstract:With the impact of urbanization and other factors, the vernacular architectural heritage faces the problem of how to carry on and innovate for sustainable development with originality and authenticity in the process of redesigning and planning. Therefore, this study uses the visualization method of quantitative analysis to analyze the research trends and hot spots of domestic vernacular architecture and explore new ways of coexistence between vernacular architecture, subject perception and cultural ecology. The critical challenge of this study is to analyze the theoretical coupling action rule between the socio-cultural structure of emotions and the cultural ecosystem of vernacular architecture, drawing on the concept of cultural ecology and the reasoning method of transmission relations in logical deduction. The main contribution of this study is to propose the concept of a subjective-cultural ecological design system for the sustainable development of vernacular architecture, to establish a three-dimensional structural analysis design paradigm and an evaluation analysis matrix, and to make vernacular architecture present the self-renewal ability of continuous exchange and revision in the dynamic cycle of this design system. This study aims to provide a standardized and flexible design research framework for contemporary vernacular architecture's innovation and sustainable development.
