Abstract:We present a weak-strong uniqueness result for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes (INS) equations in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=2,3$) for bounded initial densities that are far from vacuum. Given a strong solution within the class employed in Paicu, Zhang and Zhang (2013) and Chen, Zhang and Zhao (2016), and a Leray-Hopf weak solution, we establish that they coincide if the initial data agree. The strategy of our proof is based on the relative energy method and new $W^{-1,p}$-type stability estimates for the density. A key point lies in proving that every Leray-Hopf weak solution originating from initial densities far from vacuum remains distant from vacuum at all times.

Abstract:The limit resonant equation of the 3D rotating Navier-Stokes equations is obtained by taking large rotation limit. This equation has a nonlinear term with restricted interactions between Fourier modes, and thus it enjoys better regularity estimates than those of the classical 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Such estimates enable us to prove uniqueness of weak solutions to the limit resonant equation.

Abstract:We study the non-uniqueness of weak solutions for the two-dimensional hyper-dissipative Navier-Stokes equations in the super-critical spaces $L_{t}^{\gamma}L_{x}^{p}$ when $\alpha\in[1,\frac{3}{2})$, and obtain the conclusion that the non-uniqueness of the weak solutions at the endpoint $(\gamma,p)=(\infty, \frac{2}{2\alpha-1})$ is sharp in view of the generalized Ladyženskaja-Prodi-Serrin condition by using a different spatial-temporal building block from [Cheskidov-Luo, Ann. PDE, 9:13 (2023)] and taking advantage of the intermittency of the temporal concentrated function $g_{(k)}$ in an almost optimal way. Our results recover the above 2D non-uniqueness conclusion and extend to the hyper-dissipative case $\alpha \in(1,\frac{3}{2})$.

Abstract:This paper deals with the uniqueness of mild solutions to the forced or unforced Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. It is known that the uniqueness of mild solutions to the unforced Navier-Stokes equations holds in $L^{\infty}(0,T;L^d(\mathbb{R}^d))$ when $d\geq 4$, and in $C([0,T];L^d(\mathbb{R}^d))$ when $d\geq3$. As for the forced Navier-Stokes equations, when $d\geq3$ the uniqueness of mild solutions in $C([0,T];L^{d,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d))$ with force $f$ and initial data $u_{0}$ in some proper Lorentz spaces is known. In this paper we show that for $d\geq3$, the uniqueness of mild solutions to the forced Navier-Stokes equations in $ C((0,T];\widetilde{L}^{d,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d))\cap L^\beta(0,T;\widetilde{L}^{d,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d))$ for $\beta>2d/(d-2)$ holds when there is a mild solution in $C([0,T];\widetilde{L}^{d,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^d))$ with the same initial data and force. Here $\widetilde{L}^{d,\infty}$ is the closure of ${L^{\infty}\cap L^{d,\infty}}$ with respect to $L^{d,\infty}$ norm.

Abstract:Abstract This paper is concerned with the stationary Navier–Stokes equation in two-dimensional exterior domains with external forces and inhomogeneous boundary conditions, and shows the existence of weak solutions. This solution enjoys a new energy inequality, provided the total flux is bounded by an absolute constant. It is also shown that, under the symmetry condition, the weak solutions tend to 0 at infinity. This paper also provides two criteria for the uniqueness of weak solutions under the assumption on the existence of one small solution which vanishes at infinity. In these criteria the aforementioned energy inequality plays a crucial role.

Existence and non-uniqueness of weak solutions with continuous energy to the 3D deterministic and stochastic Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:The continuity of the kinetic energy is an important property of incompressible viscous fluid flows. We show that for any prescribed finite energy divergence-free initial data there exist infinitely many global in time weak solutions with smooth energy profiles to both the 3D deterministic and stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In the stochastic case the constructed solutions are probabilistically strong. Our proof introduces a new backward convex integration scheme with delicate selections of initial relaxed solutions, backward time intervals, and energy profiles. Our initial relaxed solutions satisfy a new time-dependent frequency truncated NSE, different from the usual approximations as it decreases the large Reynolds error near the initial time, which plays a key role in the construction.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the fractional Navier-Stokes equations. We extend a previous non-uniqueness result due to Cheskidov and Luo, found in [5], from Navier-Stokes to the fractional case, and from $L^1$-in-time, $W^{1,q}$-in-space solutions for every $q > 1$ to $L^s$-in-time, $W^{1,q}$-in-space solutions for appropriate ranges of $s,q$.

Abstract:Abstract In the present work, we consider the evolution of two fluids separated by a sharp interface in the presence of surface tension—like, for example, the evolution of oil bubbles in water. Our main result is a weak–strong uniqueness principle for the corresponding free boundary problem for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equation: as long as a strong solution exists, any varifold solution must coincide with it. In particular, in the absence of physical singularities, the concept of varifold solutions—whose global in time existence has been shown by Abels (Interfaces Free Bound 9(1):31–65, 2007) for general initial data—does not introduce a mechanism for non-uniqueness. The key ingredient of our approach is the construction of a relative entropy functional capable of controlling the interface error. If the viscosities of the two fluids do not coincide, even for classical (strong) solutions the gradient of the velocity field becomes discontinuous at the interface, introducing the need for a careful additional adaption of the relative entropy.

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove the existence of global solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations in ℝ n when the initial velocity belongs to the weighted weak Lorentz space Λ n ,∞ ( u ) with a sufficiently small norm under certain restriction on the weight u . At the same time, self-similar solutions are induced if the initial velocity is, besides, a homogeneous function of degree −1. Also the uniqueness is discussed.

Abstract:We study the incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the upper-half plane with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and non-zero external forcing terms. Existence of weak solutions is proved under a suitable condition on the external forces. Weak-strong uniqueness criteria based on various growth conditions at the infinity of weak solutions are also given. This is done by employing an energy estimate and a Hardy's inequality. Several estimates of stream functions are carried out and two density lemmas with suitable weights for the homogeneous Sobolev space on 2-dimensional space are proved.

Abstract:We consider the flow of two viscous and incompressible fluids within a bounded domain modeled by means of a two-phase Navier–Stokes system. The two fluids are assumed to be immiscible, meaning that they are separated by an interface. With respect to the motion of the interface, we consider pure transport by the fluid flow. Along the boundary of the domain, a complete slip boundary condition for the fluid velocities and a constant ninety degree contact angle condition for the interface are assumed. In the present work, we devise for the resulting evolution problem a suitable weak solution concept based on the framework of varifolds and establish as the main result a weak-strong uniqueness principle in 2D. The proof is based on a relative entropy argument and requires a non-trivial further development of ideas from the recent work of Fischer and the first author (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 236, 2020) to incorporate the contact angle condition. To focus on the effects of the necessarily singular geometry of the evolving fluid domains, we work for simplicity in the regime of same viscosities for the two fluids.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 2, Page 2248-2285, April 2024. In this paper we establish a sharp nonuniqueness result for stochastic [math]-dimensional ([math]) incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. First, for every divergence-free initial condition in [math] we show existence of infinitly many global-in-time probabilistically strong and analytically weak solutions in the class [math] for any [math]. Second, we prove that the above result is sharp in the sense that pathwise uniqueness holds in the class of [math] for some [math] such that [math], which is a stochastic version of Ladyzhenskaya–Prodi–Serrin criteria. Moreover, for the stochastic [math]-dimensional incompressible Euler equation, the existence of infinitely many global-in-time probabilistically strong and analytically weak solutions is obtained. Compared to the stopping time argument used in Hoffmanová, Zhu, and Zhu [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS), to appear; Ann. Probab., 51 (2023), pp. 524–579], we developed a new stochastic version of the convex integration. More precisely, we introduce expectation during convex integration scheme and construct directly solutions on the whole time interval [math].
