Abstract:AIM: To explore the therapeutic effect of low power laser irradiation on glial scars following spinal cord injury(SCI).METHODS: Thirty adult SD rats were divided randomly into 2 groups: control group and irradiation group.Hemisection SCI models were established in all the SD rats and low laser irradiated from skin surface to the depth of the spinal cord.At 1,3,7 and 14 d after injury, nerve recovery was evaluated by BBB and at 3,7 and 14 d after injury, spinal cord hollows, glial scar changes and CS56 expression were observed by immunohistochemistry and HE.RESULTS: After spinal cord injury, the score of BBB in the irradiation group was higher than that in control group, with statistically significant difference(P<0.05).The spinal cord hollows of the irradiation group became significantly smaller than those in control group(P<0.05),and the expression of neurofilament(NF) in the irradiation group increased near the injury areas. The expression of CS56 in the irradiation group decreased after spinal cord injury, compared with that in control group(P<0.05).CONCLUSION: Low power laser irradiation decreases the glial scar of the injury area and the expression of CS56.Low power laser irradiation thus relieves the secondary spinal cord injury and promotes nerve recovery.
