Abstract:Summary. E-Learning has acquired great momentum in academia and industry as it provides unprecedented flexibility, timing, and other convenience to all participants involved in learning processes. However, in its current state it also exhibits several drawbacks including the dominance of technology-driven rather than pedagogically well-founded solutions, the introduction of impersonality, and the danger of social isolation, which may eliminate peer-to-peer learning and lead to a loss of student motivation. Here, an innovative social software solution to form communities is proposed that is adaptive and relies on the concept of agents including agents for mobile devices to provide ubiquitous access to the system. This system purposefully provides access to appropriate learning resources based on learner interest, and facilitates regrouping of students guided by similar learning interest and preferences. The architecture and functionality of the proposed community building system’s core components are presented. Also, a group formation algorithm and a novel self-organisation process, which uses custom-designed award adjustment and member exchange rules, are discussed in detail. Through simulated experiments the efficiency and scalability of the proposed mechanisms are demonstrated.
