Abstract:Improving the engineering properties of low-strength soft marine clay in an environmentally friendly method has become a challenge. The conventional treatment technology for soft soil is cement reinforcement, which will cause severe environmental pollution. In this study, cement and three waste by-products (ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), lime, and fly ash) were used to address the insufficient strength of soft marine clay and reduce environmental pollution. Based on the mixture test design, the laboratory experiment (unconfined compressive tests) was conducted to analyze the strengths of solidified clay cured for 7 days, 14 days, and 28 days with different mixing proportions. According to the analysis of the 28 days strength of solidified clay using the software Design Expert, the optimum dosages of GGBS, lime, fly ash, and cement were determined, which were 2.14
Effects of waste glass particle size on improving the property and environmental safety of fired brick containing electroplating sludge

Abstract:The introduction of industrial solid waste in fired clay brick is a promising way to consume this waste, however, physical and mechanical properties were seriously impacted due to the incorporation of these solid waste. In current study, various particle diameters of waste glass powder (WGP) were introduced in the preparation process of brick to examine the difference in improving physical and mechanical performances of products, and to obtain the optimal particle size of waste glass for applying in the preparation of fired brick. Results showed the incorporation of WGP in larger particle size (100 and 300 meshes) can effectively improve properties, like bulk density, water absorption and compressive strength, but decrease thermal conductivity slightly. XRD and SEM analysis revealed that WGP with particles size of 100 and 300 meshes would become glass–ceramic phase or form albite, which can improve effectively physical and mechanical properties. However, part of WGP with particle size of 600 and 800 meshes might melt and crystalize into quartz at high temperature. The addition of WGP in particle size of 100 and 300 meshes can decrease much leachability of heavy metals from fired bricks and promote environment safety comparing with WGP with particle size of 600 and 800 meshes. Above results suggested that there is no necessary to grind WGP in much smaller particle size during introduction of waste glass for improving fired brick property. The conclusions from this research give some useful information for the incorporation of WGP in the preparation of fired brick.

Abstract:Fly ash, a byproduct of coal-fired thermal power stations, is among the most intricate artificially produced substances. The challenge of its suitable disposal has emerged as both an ecological issue and a squandering of potentially resources. Fly ash has good pozzolanic activity and contains reactive Al and Si components, it has the potential to dissolve under alkaline conditions to form a dense green gel, i.e. alkali activated binder. But, the widespread implementation of fly ash from different sources in generation of products is constrained by the heterogeneity of raw-material supply. In this work, physical performances, chemical-compositions, microstructures, element distribution, crystal structure, chemical-bonds, glassy content, as well as existence form of glassy-phases of eleven fly ashes sourced from different province in China were investigated via FESEM-EDS, XPS, XRD-Rietveld, FTIR, TEM NMR analysis. Then, a reactivity index of fly ash (R value) that concerned the effects of both initial state, particle morphology, internal composition was proposed. R value has been demonstrated to exhibit high predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.81–0.93) for predicting the strengths development of alkali activated products prepared with different activator modules, especially at early period. A further eleven literature datasets were utilized to validated against the accuracy of the predictions. R value facilitates an effective evaluation of fly ashes' fitness for fabricating high-strength alkali activated composites.

Abstract:Iron ore tailings and coal gangue powder are the main sources of industrial solid wastes, the dispose of which has become severe and urgent with the increasing demand of environmental harmony. The present study firstly proposed a reasonable way to deal with the large amount of iron ore tailings and coal gangue powder by making them as the sintered bricks with sewage sludge and shale as the binder, considering the advantages in both economic and environmental aspects. The bulk density, sintering shrinkage, water absorption and compressive strength of the composite sintered bricks were tested to determine the optimum preparation conditions, including sludge content, molding pressure, sintering temperature and holding time. The aforementioned characteristics as well as the leaching toxicity of composite sintered bricks produced under the optimum conditions were all met the requirement of Chinese standard of bearing-brick. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) were applied to reveal the phase transition of components during the sintering process. It was found that most of the mass and energy changes were caused by the phase transition of organic matter and water. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) found that the section of unburned brick has discrete particles with disordered size and arrangement. During the sintering process, the newly generated crystal-like mineral particles significantly increased, and the molten glass phase also appeared to wrap and cement these tiny crystal-like particles, resulted into the increasing compressive strength of sintered brick.

Abstract:The ongoing growth of ceramic wastes has raised a global concern in terms of ecological and environmental issues. Uses of ceramic wastes in concrete may offer integrative benefits of CO2 emissions reduction, waste landfill decrease, and concrete properties improvement. It is therefore crucial to clarify the effects of ceramic wastes on concrete microstructure and engineering performances. This chapter aims at providing a holistic review of workability, mechanical properties, and durability of concrete blended with ceramic wastes. The microstructure features of cement-based materials with microwaste ceramic particles (MWCPs) are investigated. Focuses are attracted on the pozzolanic reactions of MWCPs, and their interactions with cement matrix. The findings of this chapter would help the rational uses of ceramic wastes toward a greener concrete industry.
Co-combustion of Coal and Carbonaceous Wastes: Thermogravimetric Analysis

Abstract:The co-combustion characteristics of coal, two types of carbonaceous wastes (HDPE and scrap tire) and their blends were investigated in this study via a non-isothermal thermogravimetric method. The temperature indices and burnout index were used to evaluate the combustion performance of fuel. Strong synergistic effect emerged between carbonaceous wastes and coal, which showed the enhancement effect on devolatilization and the inhibition effect on char oxidation for the mixtures of coal and scrap tire while the opposite result for the mixtures of coal and HDPE. However, the addition of HDPE into coals can promote the release of volatile in advance. Moreover, the shape of TGA curves and the strength of the synergistic effect was different when carbonaceous wastes blending with different ranks of coal, which related to the combustion temperature zone and volatile content of coal.
Effect of clay fraction on the mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of waste rock fine-based brick

Abstract:The disposal of waste rock fine (WRF) from the manufacturing process of crushed aggregates is attracting more and more attention due to the thorny issues related to clay particles. This paper investigated the use of WRF as a substitute for fine aggregate that solidified by phosphogypsum (PG), groundgranulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) system in manufacturing of baking-free brick. Three kinds of WRF with different clay fraction ( i.e ., natural WRF, silty WRF, and clayey WRF) were prepared via slurry settlement methods. Thereafter, their mechanical behaviors were compared by unconfined compressive strength (UCS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. The results show that natural WRF contains 81.9% silt and 18.1% clay, after settling-based separation process, the strength of solidified silty and clayey WRF samples decreased by 4.1% and 16.5% at 28 days curing period. Micromorphology , compositional, and microstructural analyses indicate that the strength of solidified WRF is governed by both bonding and filling effect, therein, the strength of solidified silty and clayey WRF samples were lower as compared with natural WRF-based modified samples due to the gradation effect. In addition, it was noticed that although clay particles may participate in the secondary pozzolanic reaction to contribute bonding strength, they also possess superior adsorption capability owing to the large specific surface area, which will adsorb on the surface of cementitious materials and thus hinder the hydration reaction. Moreover, water stability, environmental leaching, economic, and greenhouse gas emission results further confirmed the advantage of reusing WRF and industrial by product resources.

Waste to Wealth Strategy: Preparation and Properties of Lightweight Al2O3-SiO2-Rich Castables Using Aluminum Dross Waste

Abstract:Aluminum dross is a well-known industrial waste generated in the aluminium industry, and its recycling and reuse is still a worldwide issue. Herein, aluminum dross waste (ADW) was recycled to progressively replace the aggregate fraction of clay at 70, 75, 80, 85, and 90 wt% for the fabrication of Al2O3-SiO2-rich porous castable refractories. Their physical properties and mechanical behavior were assessed by the measurement of linear shrinkage rate, bulk density, apparent porosity, cold crushing strength, and thermal conductivity. The microstructure and phase evolutions were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The incorporation of 85 wt% of ADW allowed the development of a waste-containing conventional refractory castable with improved properties as compared to those of the other samples. The sustainable refractory castable exhibited decent thermal conductivity and physical and mechanical characteristics, and is suitable for application as reheating furnace lining. It is a "green" practice to partially replace the traditional raw materials with industrial waste in the manufacture of conventional refractory castables and provides environmental and economic benefits.

Abstract:This research demonstrates changes in the behaviors and characteristics of sintered bricks while using industrial sludge ash (ISA) and waste glass (WG) as a replacement for clay in the brick manufacturing procedure. Owing to the limited amount of available land in Taiwan, it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate suitable sites for sanitary landfills, which is a common final disposal method for ash that is produced during thermal treatment in sludge factories. To meet the urgent need for land, the final waste disposal must convert this waste into a new resource. This research investigated the feasibility of using general industrial sludge ash waste, due to its abundance and high potential as a raw material in producing bricks. The result of this study shows that the bricks made from ISA and WG under a certain mixture proportion (ISA50%/WG40%/Clay10%) had excellent industrial potentials, such as compressive strength and water absorption rate. However, owing to the wide variety of components from different sources of ISA, the mixture proportion might vary accordingly. This study also analyzed the incineration index, proportion design, and process improvement, as well as investigating the possibility of increasing the total use of sludge ash as a resource. This study shows the potentials of utilizing wastes as raw materials in industrial manufacturing procedures. Therefore, more wastes can be tested and turned into resources in the future.

Abstract:The increasing depletion of natural clay resources and the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste has exerted unprecedented pressure on the environment. This study primarily aims to assess the efficacy of waste glass (WG) in enhancing the compressive strength of sludge-shale bricks. The mass loss (ML), apparent porosity (AP), bulk density (BD), water absorption (WA), and compressive strength (CS) of the sludge-shale bricks were evaluated in accordance with the relevant Chinese standards. The optimal parameters were determined to be a WG dosage of 30%, a molding pressure of 20 MPa, a sintering temperature of 1000 °C, and a holding time of 2 h. The performance of the products under optimum conditions was further evaluated through freeze–thaw tests, leaching tests, microstructural and mineralogical analysis. The results indicated that the AP, BD, WA, and CS of sludge-shale bricks prepared under optimum conditions were 35.31%, 1.69 g/cm 3 and 15.29% 52.01 MPa, respectively. Leaching tests revealed that incorporating WG and elevation of sintering temperature enhance the efficacy of heavy metal immobilization. Following 25 freeze–thaw cycles, weight loss values for all sludge-shale bricks remained considerably below national limits. Elevated WG dosage and sintering temperature promote structure vitrification and densification, facilitating anorthite formation that enhances CS. This study provides robust data support for the synergistic preparation of sintered bricks using shale, municipal sewage sludge (MSS) and WG.

Utilization of industrial wastes in non-sintered bricks: microstructure and environmental impacts

Abstract:Recycling industrial solid wastes as building materials in the construction field exhibits great environmental benefits. This study designed an eco-friendly non-sintered brick by combining multiple industrial solid wastes, including sewage sludge, fly ash, and phosphorus gypsum. The mechanical properties, microstructure, and environmental impacts of waste-based non-sintered bricks (WNBs) were investigated comprehensively. The results revealed that WNB exhibited excellent mechanical properties. In addition, steam curing could further promote the strength development of WNB. The compressive strength of WNB with 10 wt% of sewage sludge reached 13.5 MPa. Phase assemblage results indicated that the incorporation of sewage sludge promoted the generation of ettringite. Mercury intrusion porosimetry results demonstrated that the pore structure of WNB varies with the dosage of sewage sludge. Life-cycle assessment results revealed that the energy consumption and CO2 emission of WNB were 45% and 17% lower than those of traditional clay bricks. Overall, the development of WNB in this study provided insights into the co-disposal of industrial solid wastes.

Abstract:The clay brick is one of the oldest building materials, and as the use of waste in the bricks can reduce clay consummation and the environmental burden due to the accumulation of waste, the present study was chosen, the addition of mineral and organic waste to the clay brick. The added value of this work, which was carried out within the Institute of Building Materials at VGTU, is that the mixture studied is very special, because the raw materials used are: − Yellow Clay (C) from Fez which is used only in the field of pottery; − Pyrrhotite Ash (PA) which is a mineral waste produced during the manufacture of sulphuric acid from the roasting of pyrrhotite ore. This waste is stored in the open air since 1982 and until now it doesn't have any specific use; − Cedar Sawdust (S) is an organic waste regenerate by the artisanal sector from Fez. The bricks’ technological properties depended on the amount of ashes used. So, adding 5% S to the mixture (20% PA – 80% C) gives rise to a new material that is light, porous with a natural brick red colour. Most importantly, this material exhibits mechanical strength according to the standards of a terracotta brick.
Plant Test of Industrial Waste Disposal in a Cement Kiln

Abstract:Destruction of industrial waste in cement rotary kilns (CRKs) is an alternative technology for the treatment of certain types of industrial waste (IW). In this paper, three typical types of industrial wastes were co-incinerated in the CRK at Beijing Cement Plant to determine the effects of waste disposal (especially solid waste disposal) on the quality of clinker and the concentration of pollutants in air emission. Experimental results show that (1) waste disposal does not affect the quality of clinker and fly ash, and fly ash after the IW disposal can still be used in the cement production, (2) heavy metals from IW are immobilized and stabilized in the clinker and cement, and (3) concentration of pollutants in air emission is far below than the permitted values in the China National Standard-Air Pollutants Emission Standard (GB 16297-1996).

Abstract:By using the thermogravimetric analyser,the influence of seven different industrial wastes slags upon the ignition temperature of Yungui anthrathetic coal and Fujian anthrathetic coal has been studied,the results show that the second white lime mud,zincilate,steelmaking slag from shougang and LWG have a better effect upon reducing the ignition tempertaure of anthrathetic coal.By enhancing the adding proportion of waste slag,the ignition temperature can further be decreased.Through XRD analysis,it is discovered the composition of waste slag was consisted in different degree of alkaline metals,oxides of alkaline-earth metals,and their salts,several industrial waste slags were mixed according to certain proportioning ratio and being added into anthrathetic coal to burn,the catalytic effect of them was substantially stronger than that of a single waste slag.
Remedial processing of oil shale fly ash (OSFA) and its value-added conversion into glass-ceramics

Abstract:Recently, various solid wastes such as sewage sludge, coal fly ash and slag have been recycled into various products such as sintered bricks, ceramics and cement concrete. Application of these recycling approaches is much better and greener than conventional landfills since it can solve the problems of storage of industrial wastes and reduce exploration of natural resources for construction materials to protect the environment. Therefore, in this study, an attempt was made to recycle oil shale fly ash (OSFA), a by-product obtained from the extracting of shale oil in the oil shale industry, into a value-added glass-ceramic material via melting and sintering method. The influence of basicity (CaO/SiO2 ratio) by adding calcium oxide on the performance of glass-ceramics was studied in terms of phase transformation, mechanical properties, chemical resistances and heavy metals leaching tests. Crystallization kinetics results showed that the increase of basicity reduced the activation energies of crystallization but did not change the crystallization mechanism. When increasing the basicity from 0.2 to 0.5, the densification of sintering body was enhanced due to the promotion of viscous flow of glass powders, and therefore the compression strength and bending strength of glass-ceramics were increased. Heavy metals leaching results indicated that the produced OSFA-based glass-ceramics could be taken as non-hazardous materials. The maximum mechanical properties of compression strength of 186 ± 3 MPa, bending strength of 78 ± 6 MPa, good chemical resistances and low heavy metals leaching concentrations showed that it could be used as a substitute material for construction applications. The proposed approach will be one of the potential sustainable solutions in reducing the storage of oil shale fly ash as well as converting it into a value-added product.
Solidification and stabilization of Pb-Zn mine tailing with municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag for unfired brick fabrication

Abstract:The mismanaged and abandoned mine tailings are an important source of heavy metal pollution in the mining regions, and there is a significant need to develop technically, environmentally, and economically feasible and sustainable solutions to manage them. This study explored the solidification and stabilization of the tailing from an abandoned Pb-Zn mine using municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) blended with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) for fabricating unfired bricks, and systematically characterized the products' mechanical and environmental performance. Various hydration products, such as ettringite, portlandite, and hydrotalcite, were formed in the unfired bricks in the solidification and stabilization process, which enhance the physical strength of unfired bricks and help immobilize the heavy metals. Slaking treatment of MSWIFA significantly increased the mechanical strength, reduced the water absorption, and improved the durability of unfired bricks, with the product prepared from MSWIFA with 7-day slaking exhibiting the highest unconfined compressive strength (12.3 MPa) after 56 days of curing. The concentrations of As (0.35-1.49 μg/L), Cd (0.35-0.70 μg/L), Cr (1.38-9.40 μg/L), Cu (2.28-5.87 μg/L), Ni (0.16-2.24 μg/L), Pb (0.16-59.80 μg/L), and Zn (1.60-10.80 μg/L) in the leachates of unfired bricks were below the relevant regulatory limits for surface water and groundwater. Converting the mine tailing (with MSWIFA and GGBFS) to different types of unfired bricks could yield economic payback in the range of 283.7-306.5 Yuan per ton. Replacing cement with MSWIFA blended with GGBFS in the solidification and stabilization treatment could save about 0.15 ton of cement per ton of mine tailing disposed, which avoids significant energy use and carbon dioxide emissions. These findings demonstrate that utilization of mine tailings and industrial wastes to fabricate unfired bricks is a promising way of reusing such wastes and controlling the associated pollution, which also brings significant economic benefit and improves environmental sustainability.
Assessing the modification efficiency of waste glass powder in hydraulic construction materials

Abstract:<p>In this paper, the effects of waste glass powder on reaction kinetics, gel characteristics, as well as workability and mechanical property of two typical binding systems: Portland cement system and alkali activation system, are investigated. The commercial silica fume was used as a comparative supplementary cementitious material. The results show that waste glass incorporation improves the workability, while silica fume presents an obvious negative effect. Both waste glass powder and silica fume delay the early age reaction to some degree, but the reduction is less significant for waste glass. The addition of waste glass shows limited effect on the typical gel structure in Portland cement system; while in alkali activated system, silica fume incorporation results in more polymerized Si–O structure than waste glass. Thermal analysis indicates that waste glass powder exhibits relatively lower reactivity than silica fume in Portland cement system, but very similar reactivity in alkali activated system. Mixes containing waste glass show comparable but slightly lower compressive strength than the ones with silica fume addition, but a better balance between performance and cost is achieved. The microstructure characterizations further confirm the beneficial effect of waste glass powder in producing cementitious binding materials.</p>

Abstract:Disposal of waste glass and incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) in landfills is a waste of resources and poses significant environmental risks. The physical and mechanical properties, leaching behaviour, and microstructure of the glass-ceramics produced with different proportions of waste glass powder (WGP) and ISSA were investigated. Thermodynamic calculations were performed to predict the formation of crystalline phases and the phase transformation involved. The results showed the potential of WGP and ISSA as raw materials in glass-ceramics production. WGP effectively densified the microstructure of the glass-ceramics by forming a viscous phase. As WGP content increased, the total porosity of glass-ceramics decreased whereas the density increased, accompanied by the formed anorthite transforming into wollastonite. The incorporation of WGP densified and refined the pore structure of the glass-ceramics, thereby improving the mechanical properties and reducing the water absorption. The glass-ceramics produced with a 50:50 blend of WGP and ISSA exhibited the highest compressive strength of 43.7 MPa and the lowest water absorption of 0.3 %. All fabricated glass-ceramics exhibited innocuous heavy metal leaching. The co-sintering of ISSA and WGP can produce additive-free glass-ceramics, characterized by reduced energy consumption and notable heavy metal immobilization capacity. These materials hold promise for utilization in construction as building materials.

Abstract:The engineering properties of waste materials are important to landfill volume design, landfill stability analysis, leachate controlling system allocation and settlement evaluation. For Chinese landfill improvement, some tests were carried out in laboratory or in situ to study the waste properties: composition, unit weight, moisture content, porosity, shearing strength, etc. The discussion of test results and comparison with some foreign values indicate that both landfill construction and solid waste management needs ameliorating in China.

Abstract:With rapid urban development, natural aggregate resources have become scarce and a large number of ageing buildings are being demolished, which has resulted in a significant reduction in natural resources and a large increase in construction waste. Therefore, the reuse of solid waste, including waste powder and recycled aggregate, has attracted more and more attention. Additionally, as a prominent way to alleviate the urban heat island effect and manage stormwater runoff, pervious concrete has been widely studied and applied. In this paper, the effects of waste powder (fly ash, volcanic powder and blast furnace slag) and recycled aggregate (recycled concrete aggregate and recycled brick aggregate) on the mechanical properties, water permeability, water filtration and durability of pervious concrete are summarized and introduced, and some prospects are put forward. From the literature review, it can be found that adding the appropriate amount of solid waste or applying proper treatment methods to solid waste will not bring negative effects; rather, it would even improve the performance attributes of pervious concrete. Therefore, the use of solid waste in pervious concrete has great potential for urban construction and environmental protection.
