Abstract:In the late 1980s, the Ministry of Education advocated “designing certain language activities aimed at completing tasks” in professional English teaching. The revised outline in 2000 also stipulated that “more task centered and diverse teaching activities should be carried out”. In 2001, the Ministry of Education emphasized that middle school English instruction should advocate a “task-based teaching method”. As a task-centered approach to English teaching, Task-based Language Teaching has been studied and implemented by many Chinese and foreign researchers and teachers. While it is acknowledged that Task-based Language Teaching brings benefits to students and instruction, especially compared to traditional language teaching, its application to different types of real-world classroom lessons has exposed some problems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the theoretical basis, relevant information about tasks, previous research, advantages, problems, procedures and suggestions for the implementation of Task-based Language teaching, and to express some of personal opinions to some extent.

Abstract:To solve the problem of Chinese EFL students’ passive and ineffective vocabulary learning, task-based language teaching (TBLT) methods were introduced to English classes at a university. With TBLT, students interacted with each other by using English, especially English words learnt, in order to fulfil the tasks designed by teachers. Based on second language acquisition theories, students were able to understand input and produce output during this process. This paper focuses on using TBLT in English vocabulary teaching in three non-English major classes of a Chinese university, involving the use of some word games. The word games’ features, organization, and a skill set built through those games, will be discussed. In terms of methodology, an online questionnaire survey was conducted among 93 university students from the three classes. Also, results of the students’ before-task and after-task word quizzes on Moodle platform and exam paper results were analysed. The research findings showed that students enjoyed playing word games in the English class and benefitted from it, in terms of language development and building skills. This paper recommends teachers to use TBLT in English vocabulary teaching and learning, as it is practical and can assist in EFL learners’ vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract:This article suggests ways in which materials writers can incorporate key characteristics of workplace communication into the design of tasks for Business English courses for adult learners. These suggestions are based on findings from a multifaceted study of communication in Hong Kong’s globalized business world, which includes ‘week-in-the-life’ case studies of senior professionals. These findings point to the need for a simulation-based approach in which students with clearly defined and differentiated roles work quickly and collaboratively to investigate and resolve problems. They work towards this objective by processing and producing interdependent text types, such as emails and reports, and by participating in speech events, such as meetings and telephone conversations, that are stimulated by English language texts. In essence, this approach represents the ‘strong’ version of task-based language teaching and thus contrasts with the exercise-based approach found in many general-purpose Business English textbooks.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to identify the effectiveness of the task-based approach to teaching business vocabulary to master’s degree students while studying business English. The discipline of business English aims to develop students’ ability to analyse and solve problems of the business environment, improve their foreign language competence on the basis of acquired business vocabulary. The authors used the task-based approach in teaching business vocabulary which was aimed at encouraging students to social contacts, discussions, use of the necessary lexical units in situations close to real business life. The participants of the study were 34 students who studied for a master’s degree at the National Aviation University (Kyiv, Ukraine) majoring in aviation, rocket and space technology. The study of the course required 34 academic hours. According to the methodology of the experiment, the two groups of students (control and experimental ones) had the same learning materials during the course, but the teaching methods were different. In the control group, we used traditional vocabulary learning methods which implied the presentation of the new vocabulary by the teacher, practice exercises which made learners more familiar with the lexical units and the use of the new vocabulary by students in context. In the experimental group, task-based learning method was used which required students to work on solving real business problems with special attention to the development of teamwork skills and communication skills based on the students’ experience of work in business and communication with colleagues from other countries. Specially designed tasks were used to intensify the process of learning business vocabulary. The study showed significant positive dynamics in the acquisition of business vocabulary by students of the experimental group. The results of the test confirmed that task-based approach to vocabulary learning allows students to learn the necessary business vocabulary on a particular topic more easily and quickly It has been concluded that the task-based approach is not only efficient in vocabulary learning, but also increases the students’ confidence in their professional and communicative competence.

Abstract:Vocabulary teaching is an important research topic in English teaching, this paper combines constructivist theory with English vocabulary teaching and proposes a new model of vocabulary teaching on the basis of qualitative analysis and modular construction, that is “The Word Parameter Contextualized Meaning Construction Mode and The Embodiment-activation Schematic Construction Mode”, the former point out that some words, in vocabulary teaching, do not appear in the vocabulary list, but teachers can hint parameters or clues in the context, such as: time, categories, comparison etc. to guide students to recognize and construct the meaning of unknown words autonomously; the latter means that the human brain systematically stores the learned knowledge and experience and divides it into several units to form a "schema" of which some incomplete places will continue to be supplemented and improved with people's cognition and practice’s development. At the same time, the accumulation of new knowledge will activate the old knowledge in the brain, which enables learners to connect messy knowledge into a systematic network. It is worth promoting in teaching practice. This study selects the college English textbook "New Vision" as the case material to analyze and prove that this new type of vocabulary teaching mode not only can broaden the teaching thinking of teachers and improve teaching efficiency, but also can help students explore the cognitive laws of vocabulary, build a vocabulary system, and effectively stimulate their potential in the short term.

Abstract:Speaking is an essential aspect of English learning. It reflects the student’s ability to express and comprehensively use the language. In the 21st century, international exchanges have become increasingly frequent. Therefore, English is more important as a tool of international communication. Despite this, under the long-term pressure of examinations, English teaching in our country only focuses on reading, writing, and other content closely related to testing scores, while oral English teaching is easily neglected. Even in the classrooms where oral English teaching is implemented, the teaching activities and methods are relatively monotonous and out of touch with the actual situation, resulting in students’ low enthusiasm for oral English and unwillingness to speak English. In order to solve this problem, this paper studies an effective oral English teaching method --- Task-Based Language Learning (TBLT). This teaching method abandons the disadvantages of the traditional oral English teaching method and better improves students’ oral English ability. TBLT is a teaching method that gradually emerged and developed in the 1980s. In language teaching, TBLT requires language teaching based on tasks, and students should learn the language while completing the tasks. TBLT allows students to use English to complete various actual tasks related to life, study, and work, making classroom teaching real and task-oriented and cultivating students’ ability to use English in practice.

Abstract:Abstract Across China, English language teaching curricula have advocated for task-based language teaching (TBLT) for more than 20 years. Yet, there is reason to believe that practice varies widely. As such, this multiple case study sheds light on two Chinese teachers’ understandings and implementation of TBLT in a public primary school in Chongqing, southwest China. Data collection consisted of eight semi-structured interviews and eight classroom observations. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The analysis indicated that the teachers had basic understandings of TBLT, but their teaching was incongruent with its principles. Few tasks were observed in their lessons. Three main factors affected the teachers’ implementation of TBLT: (1) classroom management issues; (2) preparation and teaching resources; and (3) the teachers’ own tacit reluctance.

Abstract:Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) refers to the use of tasks as the essential component of planning and instruction in language teaching. In TBLT, language learning becomes a process that provides many communicative opportunities for learners and primarily focuses on making meaning. Additionally, TBLT is a form of learner-centered teaching approach, in which learners learn the target language with self-motivated and task-based pair work or group work. Although TBLT have influenced English languages teaching throughout the world, with a number of Asian countries widely promoting TBLT in their English education policies, many difficulties have emerged with respect to implementing these methods in practice. In China, the ministry of national education proposed the new curriculum standard (2001), which clearly required application of task-based language teaching in to basic language teaching. However, many Chinese scholar argue that it is inadvisable to directly import and use Task-based language teaching in China, as this should be localized and teaching methods should be chosen flexibly. It is therefore important to apply these modern teaching methods with an exact and careful consideration of the cultural values and realistic environments.

Abstract:As a widely-used language teaching approach, Task- B ased Language Teaching (TBLT) has become increasingly popular in the field of second language acquisition, which can be applied in a wide range of different ages learners. The practice of TBLT in College English in China seems to be comparatively successful these years. The author starts his essay with a systematic literature review which addresses the theoretical bases of TBLT as well as the background information of College English E ducation in China. The essay then looks into the different practical situations in different learning contexts in Chinese colleges in terms of four English skills: listening, speaking, reading , writing, and tries to confirm which context is best suited to. Finally , the essay argues that it is difficult to define a specific section TBLT has obviously better effects than the other three in College English education, through comparing the strengths and limitations of application to each skill. In summary, TBLT can be favorably practiced in College English by narrowing down the drawbacks of the application to each skill.

Abstract:This study examines university teachers’ beliefs and practices related to task-based language teaching while teaching English as a foreign language. Task-based language teaching (TBLT) has become a prominent topic for researchers and practitioners in recent decades. It is also advocated by the Chinese Ministry of Education for college English teaching. However, few studies have investigated local EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers’ perceptions of and difficulties in implementing TBLT. This study aims to fill this gap. Data were collected via 12 semi-structured interviews, and the results revealed that the Chinese EFL teachers employed a weak version of the approach, i.e. the task-supported language teaching approach. They tended towards a student-centred teacher–student relationship. These findings suggest that the role of traditional Chinese values in influencing the implementation of TBLT has been overemphasized. Implications for the sustainable development of teaching pedagogy and professional learning are discussed.

Abstract:In the realm of foreign language acquisition, vocabulary is often recognized as the cornerstone of communicative competence. The complexity and diversity of English vocabulary present a formidable challenge to learners, particularly in non-English speaking contexts. Traditional vocabulary teaching methods have been criticized for their limited effectiveness, prompting a need for innovative approaches that address the multifaceted nature of vocabulary learning. Moreover, the cognitive processes underlying vocabulary acquisition and the role of learner autonomy in this process have become focal points in contemporary language pedagogy. This study aims to explore and analyze the challenges and opportunities in English vocabulary teaching, especially within the context of higher education in China. By comprehensively reviewing the research findings of some scholars, this paper reveals the multi-dimensional approaches and teaching strategies for English vocabulary acquisition. The study points out that vocabulary teaching should transcend the traditional model of separating grammar and vocabulary, and achieve an organic integration of vocabulary and grammar through morphological methods, metacognitive strategy training, and the application of the connectionist theory, thereby promoting the comprehensive improvement of students language abilities. In addition, this paper also emphasizes the application of corpora in English vocabulary teaching and the insights of cognitive linguistics for vocabulary instruction, proposing a novel vocabulary teaching model based on the theory of lexical chunks. The research results indicate that by comprehensively applying a variety of teaching methods and strategies, it is possible to significantly enhance students vocabulary memory, comprehension, and application abilities, thereby improving the overall effectiveness of English teaching.
