Abstract:Memory is crucial for the acquisition of the tremendous amount of knowledge and skills and thus it is the basis of human survival and development. Then, how do learning and memory performance and neural mechanisms change with age? Around the core issue, this article first summarized the research results in recent years, especially those about some important memory subsystems such as working memory and long-term memory (including explicit and implicit memory). Then we revealed the research status in the field of developmental neuroscience of memory and predicted the future direction. On the basis of the work mentioned above, we put forward following suggestions to promote research work in China: (i) making further studies on the neural mechanisms of learning and memory and solving critical problems in this field; (ii) strengthening research on brain mechanisms of learning and memory of children and the elderly; (iii) paying attention to longitudinal studies; (iv) establishing more comprehensive brain-behavior models; (v) strengthening applied studies.
A New Phase of Studies on Language Learners' Individual Differences

Abstract:In this paper, the authors make a comprehensive review of the studies on language learners' individual differences, in which three kinds of research are identified, including univariable, multi-variable and comprehensive studies. The problematic linear hypothesis in uni-variable studies causes conflicting research results. Although multi-variable studies have overcome the hypothesis of linearity, they ignore the comprehensive and dynamic nature of individual differences. Comprehensive studies take Dynamic System Theory as their theoretical basis and solve the problems with the other two kinds of studies, marking a new age of studies on individual differences. On the basis of the review,a focus is made on the discussion about the characteristics of comprehensive studies and their future directions.

Abstract:Memory is the main skill of learning.Goodness or badness of memory result will directly effect on the highness or lowness of students' learning results.The study shows that there are differences between Learning excellent students and Learning disabled students in their memory,and the former has obvious advantages in short-term memory and long-term memory;also the memory ability of Learning excellent students will increase with the higher of their grades;but learning disabled students not.Meanwhile,comparing their vision short-term memory,learning excellent boys are obvious lower,but in their hearing long-term memory,learning disabled students have the relevant advantages.

Abstract:Humans differ in innumerable ways, with considerable variation observable at every level of description, from the molecular to the social. Traditionally, linguistic and psycholinguistic theory has downplayed the possibility of meaningful differences in language across individuals. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that there is significant variation among speakers at any age as well as across the lifespan. Here, we review recent research in psycholinguistics, and argue that a focus on individual differences (IDs) provides a crucial source of evidence that bears strongly upon core issues in theories of the acquisition and processing of language; specifically, the role of experience in language acquisition, processing, and attainment, and the architecture of the language system.

Abstract:Most research on long-term memory uses an experimental approach whereby participants are assigned to different conditions, and condition means are the measures of interest. This approach has demonstrated repeatedly that conditions that slow the rate of learning tend to improve later retention. A neglected question is whether aggregate findings at the level of the group (i.e., slower learning tends to improve retention) translate to the level of individual people. We identify a discrepancy whereby—across people—slower learning tends to coincide with poorer memory. The positive relation between learning rate (speed of learning) and retention (amount remembered after a delay) across people is referred to as learning efficiency. A more efficient learner can acquire information faster and remember more of it over time. We discuss potential characteristics of efficient learners and consider future directions for research.

Abstract:Two experiments were made to research the resource distribution of attention in the process of prospective memory pick-up in this study.The purpose of the research was to explore the influence of the difference of the background on the testees in the course of trying to complete the mission of prospective memory in some backgrounds with different degrees of difficulty.The result reveals that the control of the testees's attention distribution from bottom to top through changing the background difficulty will remarkably affect the mission of prospective memory and the effect of the process,an indication that there is an attention process in an early process of the prospective memory misson.

Abstract:This study examined memory integration performance in Chinese adults with high and low executive function levels in a cross-Chinese-English language context. The executive function of 356 college students was assessed prior to the experiments to identify participants with different executive function levels. All three studies utilized the separate-sentence paradigm as the experimental design. Considering that memory integration involves the encoding of two stem facts and the retrieval process of the integrated facts, Experiment 1 investigated memory integration performance across different encoding language conditions, while Experiment 2 focused on retrieval language conditions. Experiment 3 aimed to address limitations and explore the impact of different questioning languages in cross-language encoding conditions. Results showed that the presentation language during encoding significantly influenced memory integration, with better performance when the first stem fact was presented in the first language. The questioning language used for integrated facts also affected memory integration, with performance declining as the difficulty of switching between questioning and encoding languages increased. It is noteworthy that participants' retrieval of questions in their first language was associated with superior results in terms of integration performance. The study suggests that the influence of executive function and language condition on memory integration varied depending on the specific processing stage. These findings support theories on low surface similarity's influence on knowledge integration and highlight the role of executive function at the individual level.

Abstract:Abstract Neural mechanisms underlying semantic processing have been extensively studied by using functional magnetic resonance imaging, nevertheless, the individual differences of it are yet to be unveiled. To further our understanding of functional and anatomical brain organization underlying semantic processing to the level of individual humans, we used out-of-scanner language behavioral data, T1, resting-state, and story comprehension task-evoked functional image data in the Human Connectome Project, to investigate individual variability in the task-evoked semantic processing network, and attempted to predict individuals’ language skills based on task and intrinsic functional connectivity of highly variable regions, by employing a machine-learning framework. Our findings first confirmed that individual variability in both functional and anatomical markers were heterogeneously distributed throughout the semantic processing network, and that the variability increased towards higher levels in the processing hierarchy. Furthermore, intrinsic functional connectivities among these highly variable regions were found to contribute to predict individual reading decoding abilities. The contributing nodes in the overall network were distributed in the left superior, inferior frontal, and temporo-parietal cortices. Our results suggested that the individual differences of neurobiological markers were heterogeneously distributed in the semantic processing network, and that neurobiological markers of highly variable areas are not only linked to individual variability in language skills, but can predict language skills at the individual level.

Abstract:The relative evidences from behavioral studies and electrophysiological studies have proved that the memory mechanism plays an important role in language comprehension.On one hand,working memory provides the operable platform for language comprehension,and the limited storage is the cause of comprehension strategies.On the other hand,long-term memory offers necessary backup-support for language comprehension.Based on the discussion upon the relationship between language comprehension and the memory mechanism,the paper retrospectively analyzes the effect mechanism of memory and the nature of the working memory system,summarizes the relative theories and the experimental evidences.In the end,the directions for future researches are put forward.

Abstract:As a interdisciplinary field of research,social cognitive neuroscience integrates social psychology and cognitive neuroscience,which aims at understanding phenomena in terms of interactions between 3 levels of analysis:the social level,cognitive level and neural level and focusing on traditional social psychological phenomena such as stereotyping,attitude and attitude change,person perception,self-knowledge and interaction between affect and cognition.By applying cognitive neuroscience approach to verifying various theories of social psychology, current researches have got advances in some areas but their leaves other areas to explore.Future work will combine the researches of unification and dissection,Bottom-Up and Top-Down,which will surely contribute to the establishing of integrative research paradigm.

Abstract:Latent growth models were applied to data on multitrial verbal and spatial learning tasks from two independent studies. Although significant individual differences in both initial level of performance and subsequent learning were found in both tasks, age differences were found only in mean initial level, and not in mean learning. In neither task was fluid or crystallized intelligence associated with learning. Although there were moderate correlations among the level parameters across the verbal and spatial tasks, the learning parameters were not significantly correlated with one another across task modalities. These results are inconsistent with the existence of a general (e.g., material-independent) learning ability.

Abstract:Executive functions (EFs)—a set of general-purpose control processes that regulate one’s thoughts and behaviors—have become a popular research topic lately and have been studied in many subdisciplines of psychological science. This article summarizes the EF research that our group has conducted to understand the nature of individual differences in EFs and their cognitive and biological underpinnings. In the context of a new theoretical framework that we have been developing (the unity/diversity framework), we describe four general conclusions that have emerged. Specifically, we argue that individual differences in EFs, as measured with simple laboratory tasks, (a) show both unity and diversity (different EFs are correlated yet separable), (b) reflect substantial genetic contributions, (c) are related to various clinically and societally important phenomena, and (d) show some developmental stability.

Abstract:Studies on animal individual differences and its association with personality psychology have gained increasing research attention and been intensively investigated by many researchers. Despite of many other descriptive terms, a broad working definition of animal individual differences is “animal personality”, which refers to a set of related behavioral patterns with consistency across time and situations. Researchers of animal individual differences should ensure their selected research variables are comprehensive in intra-species and comparable in inter-species. The contribution and value of studies on animal individual differences to personality psychology were discussed mainly in aspects of personality constructs, influence of genetics and environment, association of personality with cognition and health, as well as personality-environment match.

Abstract:Personalized learning allows students to pursue individual learning goals at their own pace. Such a benefit is achieved by understanding each individual's needs. Hence, it is important to implement personalized learning to accommodate students' individual differences. Due to such importance, research into this issue has increased over the past decade. Accordingly, this paper presents a state-of-the art review of the current research that investigates relationships between individual differences and personalized learning. The main results from past research include that: (1) learning style is a major individual difference considered in works on personalized learning; (2) current works shift to address multiple individual differences, instead of a single difference; (3) learner models are widely applied to deal with multiple individual differences in the development of personalized learning; (4) learning styles, prior knowledge, preferences and ability levels are frequently considered together, and (5) it is a current trend to consider emotion recognition in the context of personalized learning. In addition to reviewing existing empirical studies, this paper also does an appraisal to identify directions for future research.

Abstract:Individual differences in adult human brain structure have been found to reveal a great deal of information about variability in behaviors, cognitive abilities and mental and physical health. Driven by such evidence, what contributes to individual variation in brain structure has gained accelerated attention as a research question. Findings thus far appear to support the notion that an individual's brain architecture is determined largely by genetic and environmental influences. This review aims to evaluate the empirical literature on whether and how genes and the environment contribute to individual differences in brain structure. It first considers how genetic and environmental effects may separately contribute to brain morphology, by examining evidence from twin, genome-wide association, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Next, evidence for the influence of the complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors, characterized as gene-environment interactions and correlations, is reviewed. In evaluating the extant literature, this review will conclude that both genetic and environmental factors play critical roles in contributing to individual variability in brain structure.

Abstract:In the present study, we examined the role of contextual factors in beliefs about remembering personal experiences. Specifically, we examined why individuals think that they remember experiences in everyday life and whether the reasons for remembering varied as a function of recall context, memory theme, and culture. In Experiment 1, we examined young adults’ reported memories in two hypothetical contexts. In Experiment 2, memories were reported in response to cue words in European American and Chinese young adults. The results indicated that social sharing contexts appeared to favor social functions, whereas private reminiscence contexts tended to favor nonfunctional reasons for remembering and, to a lesser extent, directive functions. The European Americans reported more functional reasons for remembering, whereas the Chinese were more likely to report external cues as a reason for remembering. Finally, self functions were rarely reported. The results are interpreted in light of theories of memory functions and the role of contextual factors on remembering.

Abstract:Relying on existing literature to identify suitable techniques for characterizing individual differences presents practical and methodological challenges. These challenges include the frequent absence of detailed descriptions of raw data, which hinders the assessment of analysis appropriateness, as well as the exclusion of data points deemed outliers, or the reliance on comparing only extreme groups by categorizing continuous variables into upper and lower quartiles. Despite the availability of algorithmic modeling in standard statistical software, investigations into individual differences predominantly focus on factor analysis and parametric tests. To address these limitations, this application-oriented study proposes a comprehensive approach that leverages behavioral responses through the use of signal detection theory and clustering techniques. Unlike conventional methods, signal detection theory considers both sensitivity and bias, offering insights into the intricate interplay between perceptual ability and decision-making processes. On the other hand, clustering techniques enable the identification and classification of distinct patterns within the dataset, allowing for the detection of singular behaviors that form the foundation of individual differences. In a broader framework, these combined approaches prove particularly advantageous when analyzing large and heterogeneous datasets provided by data archive platforms. By applying these techniques more widely, our understanding of the cognitive and behavioral processes underlying learning can be expedited and enhanced.
Differential Expression and Regulation of Two Critical Periods of Transcription and Translation in Hippocampus During Memory Formation

Abstract:There are two critical periods of transcription and translation during long-term memory formation.However,the global characteristics,functions and regulation mechanisms of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) during those two periods are not yet fully understood.We conducted data mining on the transcriptome and ribosome profiling of mouse hippocampi at multiple time points during the contextual fear conditioning experiment.We found that the number of DEGs and their changes were small.Genes such as Efcab7 and Shc4 were under regulation on both transcription and translation levels.The changes of most DEGs were not time-specific,except those of a few genes such as Btg2.DEGs were divided into 8 groups based on their trends of change,time of change and regulation levels,and they were enriched with distinct functions.The predicted regulatory factors of each group contained proteins and microRNAs that have not been reported to be involved in learning.These results would contribute to a more complete understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of learning.More importantly,we have discovered several genes and their properties that might be related to learning and memory but have not yet received much attention.
