Abstract:Coal is the dominant primary energy source in China and the major source of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. To facilitate the use of coal in an environmentally satisfactory and economically viable way, clean coal technologies (CCTs) are necessary. This paper presents a review of recent research and development of four kinds of CCTs: coal power generation; coal conversion; pollution control; and carbon capture, utilization, and storage. It also outlines future perspectives on directions for technology research and development (R&D). This review shows that China has made remarkable progress in the R&D of CCTs, and that a number of CCTs have now entered into the commercialization stage.

Abstract:Based on the primary energy characteristics of China,the current status and future development of clean coal technologies,including large-scale ultra-super-critical(USC)power generators,flue gas cleaning,circulating fluidized-bed combustion(CFBC),integrated gasification combined cycle(IGCC)technology,and coal washing are analyzed in details.It can be concluded that,in the short term,USC generation with flue gas cleaning and CFBC will be the two major clean coal technologies in China.However,IGCC,oxy-fuel combustion(especially pressurized oxy-fuel combustion),and CO2 capture and storage are of great potential and are worth developing in the long term.

Abstract:As it is urgently required to prevent and control pollution, China must accelerate the development of clean coal combustion technologies. However, currently there lacks researches on the technology roadmap of clean coal combustion in China. This paper briefly introduces main features of the coal utilization structure in China, and also the significance in developing clean coal combustion technologies. Then, focusing on 6 types of clean coal combustion technologies, we discuss the strategic ideology and targets, status quo at home and abroad, future technical directions, major fields and key technologies. On this basis, we depict a technology roadmap for the clean coal combustion in China before 2050, and also provide relevant policy recommendations. Results indicate that in the near future, China must accelerate the application of new circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technologies in small and medium-sized coal-fired industrial boilers, and popularize a batch of high-quality briquettes and advanced stoves in the field of residential coal combustion, so as to reduce the dispersed coal-burning pollution. In the long run, the government must strengthen planning and guidance to increase the proportion of coal for clean and efficient centralized power generation, and continuously research and develop green coal power generation technologies and systems for the future.

Abstract:Considering that coal is of important status in the energy supply in both China and in the United States of America, this paper points out that clean coal conversion technology shall remain a leading technology in solving both countries’ coal utilization and environment issues before 2050. It reviews the current situation and growing trend of clean coal conversion technology involving advanced coal chemical engineering, with a focus on technologies in coal gasification, coal liquefaction, coal to olefins, and coal to ethylene glycol. This study points out that priorities should be given to the development of core technologies including chemical looping gasification technologies, one-step synthesis of low-carbon olefins from the synthetic gas, and CO2 emission reduction in coal conversion system. Strategic recommendations are put forward that collaboration should be done in fundamental part such as mechanisms in coal chemistry and coal chemical engineering, development of efficient catalysts, and design of new-type reactor.

Abstract:Recently, air pollution has taken Chinese a great concern. The emission control of electricity industry is the key to the air quality improvement since electricity industry accounts for over 50 % of China’s coal consumption. This work introduces the progress and prospects of ultra-low emission control technologies based power generation technologies. The ultra-low emission control technologies and integrated systems are developed and optimized by the support of a series of national projects to reach the emission level of natural gas power generation units in using coal-fired units. The application and promotion of these technologies are proven to be an important solution for the air quality improvement, especially in regions with high energy-consumption, since these technologies have shown great potential for deep-cut in pollutant emissions, which will benefit both the society and the environment. In the future, the research will focus on the deep-cut of various pollutants and high-efficiency CO2 capture to lay a solid foundation for the construction of the world’s cleanest coal-fired power plants.

Abstract:According to proceedings of the International Conference on Power Engineering, held in Kobe, Japan, in 2003, recent technical progress in low NO_x combustion, incineration of solid wastes, gasification of coal and solid wastes are being reviewed in the main. At preset, denitration of flue gas has become an urgent problem in the retrofit of Chinese power plants; highly efficient combustion with low NO_x emission is a cost efficient technology, suitable for Chinese conditions. The technology of waste utilization by combining pyrolysis and incineration has already been popularized in Japan, but its power generation with steam turbines has but an efficiency too low for future small scale power generation systems. Only the technology by means of gas engines or gas turbines proffers a higher efficiency for power generation systems which have a waste handling capacity of below 200t/d, and may thus become a good option for distributed type of energy utilization. Abstract:Coal gasification is the key technology for clean and high-efficiency coal utilization. It also is the basis of process industry for coal-based chemicals synthesis(such as ammonia,methanol,acetic acid , olefin etc. ), advanced Intergrated Gasification Combined Cycle ( IGCC ) system , poly-cogeneration,hydrogen production,fuel cell and direct-reduction iron making. It is very important to research and develop large-scale coal gasification technology. In this paper,the status of the development of over-sea large-scale coal gasification technology is summarized. And that of research and commercialization of large-scale coal gasification in China is also been introduced. The development trend of and technical approach to commercialization of coal gasification are analyzed.

Abstract:Clean coal technology means the new control technologies which will reduce the discharge of pollutant and increase the utilization ratio of coal during the processing of coal.Circulating fluidized bed,boosting combined circulating fluidized bed and IGCC are all competitive technologies of clean coal,in which the technology of circulating fluidized bed is developing much fast in China.There is a practial example(1025 t/h)of large power station.Now the technology of super critical circulating fluidized bed is under devecopment and the commercial running of IGCC is just starting,for instance,250 MW power unit of Tianjin green electric IGCC project,Huaneng has started now.The technology of boosting combined circulating fluidized bed is under perfection.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:Based on the co-combustion principle of coal gangue and biomass, the combustion characteristics, kinetic mechanisms, and pollutant emission characteristics of mixed coal gangue and wheat straw in oxy-fuel atmosphere were investigated by conducting experiments with a thermogravimetric analyzer and a tube furnace in this paper. The results indicated that the comprehensive combustion characteristics, reaction rate and burnout rate of the samples can be improved with the increase of O 2 concentration in oxy-fuel atmosphere. When O 2 concentration is 50%, the emission peaks of pollutants SO 2 and NO x are the highest. The increase of biomass content can accelerate the combustion reaction rate, increase the total weight loss rate, enhance the comprehensive combustion characteristics of the samples significantly, and reduce the release of SO 2 . A faster heating rate corresponds to higher ignition temperature, burnout temperature, and the maximum weight loss rate temperature, leading to improved comprehensive combustion characteristics and flammability. Combustion temperature has a significant effect on pollutant release, and the release of CO and SO 2 is relatively low under the condition of 900∼1000 o C. Therefore, the use of oxy-fuel combustion technology for the co-combustion of coal gangue and biomass holds the potential to significantly improve the combustion performance of coal gangue, reduce pollutant emissions, and provide theoretical guidance for the resource utilization of coal gangue and biomass.

Abstract:The reuse of coal gangue for energy recovery is developing rapidly in China, due to its advantage in achieving both economic and environmental benefits. Low-quality coal is often added to elevate the calorific value of the fuel. In this paper, the combustion characteristics as well as pollutant emissions (SO 2 and NO) of coal gangue, low-quality coal and their blends at different proportions were investigated by using both thermal analysis and fixed-bed reactor. Results showed that compared with pure coal gangue, co-combustion with low-quality coal lowered ignition and burnout temperature, but only slightly decreased the activation energy. In regard to pollution emissions, the coal addition contributed to the tailing peak of SO 2 emission during co-combustion, which may influence the desulfurization process. The co-combustion elevated the NO yield due to high nitrogen content in the coal used. An increase in char content with increasing coal ratio in turn promoted a reduction in NO.
A study on the ash from coal gangue fired power plant-characteristics and application

Abstract:Coal will continue to dominate China s energy supply in the future. The mining of coal creates large amount of gangue which not only occupies a large area of land but also generate environmental problems. On the other hand, coal gangue is a low calorific fuel which should be utilized properly. A few small power plants are current running or under construction in China. However, due to its high ash content, coal gangue generates a large amount of ash when it is combusted in power plants. The ash from power stations not only contributes to emissions of fine particulates in the air but also results in the contamination of soil. The utilization of coal gangue ash is therefore important to reduce China s environmental pollution. In this paper, current status of the research and development of gangue ash utilization in China is reviewed. The gangue ash has found its application in a wide range of areas, such as road construction, chemicals, agriculture fertilizers, etc. Some ash samples were collected by the authors from a coal gangue fired power plant in Fuxin, northeast China. Characteristics of the ash were analyzed by using XRD, SEM, Laser sizer and other techniques. Because of its physical structure (e.g., large surface area and porosity) and its composition (i.e., containing mainly SiO2, Al2O3 and CaO) the gangue ash has a potential in the application of iron-based sorbents for high temperature removal of hydrogen sulfide from coal gas. A desulphurization sorbent was prepared by using the mixture of iron oxide and the gangue ash collected from the power plant. The structure and property of the surbent were examined using XRD, SEM and other techniques.

Abstract:Compared with conventional system, the system for conveying and combustion of high density pulverized coal has obvious advantages is aspects of transportation, combustion stabilization. and environmental protection. The key technologies of high density pulverized coal, such as fluidation and blending of said coal, conveying stability, burnout out of pulverized coal, and slagging in the furnace etc., have been systematically analysed, and corresponding improvement measures for existing problems being put forward. Results of practical application show that the properties of conveying and combustion for pulverized coal have been improved, economic behavior of the unit being enhanced, obtaining obvious effectiveness.

Abstract:Energy is the lifeblood of the national economy. At present, China's energy development situation is severe, and its external dependence on crude oil and natural gas is relatively high. Considering the national conditions of coal, strengthening the clean and efficient utilization of coal is strategically significant; specifically, the clean and efficient coal transformation is an important approach. This study summarized the status quo of clean and efficient coal transformation, and analyzed the high-end, diversified, low-carbon, and intelligent development trend of the industry as well as the technology development trends that include coal transformation to clean fuels, coal transformation to bulk and special chemicals, and pollutant control in coal transformation. Moreover, the study analyzed the development challenges regarding water resources, carbon emissions, product competitiveness, and supporting policies, and proposed a development idea that is led by planning, demonstration, and innovation. The research suggests that the strategic position of clean and efficient coal transformation in the energy system should be clarified, the national coal-to-oil-and-gas strategic reserve mechanism should be established, financial credit and energy statistics policy support should be strengthened, and the scientific and technological innovation ability should be improved by building research and development platforms.

Abstract:Coal is the main source of energy in our country, and its role in the economic development is extremely important. However, with the development of economy, the dependence on coal is becoming stronger and stronger. As coal is a nonrenewable resource and caters to the sustainable development policy, the use of coal with low ash, low sulfur and high value is a major trend of coal development in the future. Finally, based on the advantages and disadvantages of the aforementioned preparation technology, the future development direction for Ultra-low ash coal preparation is proposed. Abstract:The sources,characteristics of water quality and difficulties in the treatment of coal chemical wastewater are introduced. Aiming at the main treatment technologies,including three aspects:the separation technology,bio-logical technology and advanced oxidation technology,the relevant research status,development trend and applica-tion in China and abroad are summarized. The future research directions are predicted ,and the combination and op-timization of various treatment technologies are pointed out , so as to alleviate the inhibition of wastewater ,achieving the effect of efficient biological denitrification. It is an inevitable trend to realize the ‘zero discharge’ of coal chemi-cal wastewater.
