Abstract:Along with the automobile lightweight development, aluminum has become the focus of its own material characteristics. The aluminum alloy products with high efficiency, high quality and low cost are the guarantee of competitive advantage. High quality die surface is directly related to the product quality, cost, production efficiency, die life and so on. In this paper, the stamping process of two kinds of aluminum alloy products was simulated by Auto Form. The method of setting blank holding force and spring back compensation was introduced. At the same time, the setting of parameters such as die fillet, friction coefficient and draw bead was described in this paper. Finally, the optimization of die surface design was achieved by simulation.

Abstract:In recent years, with the development of society and advancement of technology, aluminium and aluminium alloys are used more and more widely. It becomes a trend that traditional steel sheets are replaced by aluminium sheets for auto body. The research progress, application status and development prospect of aluminium alloys for auto body sheets are summarized in this paper. Among the 2000, 5000 and 6000 series aluminium alloys now studied, the new style 6000 series Al-Mg-Si based alloy is specially introduced as a emphasis in future research.There are many advantages about it: proper strength and plasticity, good corrosion-resistance performance, easycoloring and effect of painting strengthening. Besides, some problems such as high cost and poor formation performance, which hold up the application of aluminium alloys for auto body sheets, are listed. At last, several advices are presented to develop characteristic alurninium alloys of high properties for auto body sheets in China. For instance, the stamping property should be improved by designing the compostition and technology and the relationship of stamping property, mechanical properties, composition and technology should be made clear, the material composition and technology can be designed by using computer techniques such as artificial neural network and genetic algo rithrn.

Abstract:Al–Si–Cu–Mg cast aluminum alloys have important applications in automobile lightweight due to their advantages such as high strength-to-weight ratio, good heat resistance and excellent casting performance. With the increasing demand for strength and toughness of automotive parts, the development of high strength and toughness Al–Si–Cu–Mg cast aluminum alloys is one of the effective measures to promote the application of cast aluminum alloys in the automotive industry. In this paper, the research progress of improving the strength and toughness of Al–Si–Cu–Mg cast aluminum alloys was described from the aspects of multi-component alloying and heat treatment based on the strengthening mechanism of Al–Si–Cu–Mg cast aluminum alloys. Finally, the development prospects of automotive lightweight Al–Si–Cu–Mg cast aluminum alloys is presented.

Abstract:There is an increasingly urgent need of lightweight components in aerospace industry, among which aluminum (Al) alloys have been the optimal materials of choice for aircraft structural parts since being used in the Junkers F.13 aircraft in the 1920s. Compared to other metal materials, Al alloys have a lower density, and the use of Al alloys reduces the total weight of the aircraft and improves fuel efficiency and load capacity. Meanwhile, the strength and hardness of Al alloys with alloying and heat treatment can be significantly enhanced for uses in high loads and vibration environments. Furthermore, in the harsh aerospace environment, aircraft may receive various climatic conditions and chemical corrosion. Due to good corrosion and fatigue resistance, Al alloys demonstrate excellent performance under these conditions, ensuring the long–term service life of aircraft. In addition, Al alloys have good recyclability, and they can be recycled to reduce resource consumption and environmental load, in line with the principle of sustainable development. In recent years, although composites have been widely used in aerospace, high–strength Al alloys are still in an indispensable position. Therefore, this article reviews the progress and applications of Al alloys commonly used in aerospace. The common strengthening methods and advanced manufacturing and processing technologies of Al alloy are also discussed, which can provide references for the development of advanced high–performance aviation Al alloys in the future.

The carbon fiber reinforced aluminum alloy has the excellent characteristics of carbon fiber material and aluminum alloy material, with high strength, high modulus, high wear resistance and other characteristics, and has been extensively promoted in the automobile industry. This paper reviews the preparation process of carbon fiber reinforced aluminum alloy, including powder metallurgy, vacuum pressure immersion and squeeze casting. At the same time, carbon fiber reinforced aluminum alloy is introduced, mainly including automobile lightweight and the production of parts. This review paper will provide readers with a simple understanding of this field and offer some guidance regarding the application of carbon fiber reinforced aluminum alloy in the automotive industry.

Taking examples of the design of car body, this paper focused on the remarkable effects of the application of AHSS in automobile lightweight, car safety and environment. It was also pointed out that the key topics will fall in the forming technique of AHSS and the applications of AHSS to new car body design to enhance automobile safety.

Abstract:Taking the control arm of a vehicle of a Chinese domestic brand as a prototype, the material of the control arm was changed from steel to aluminum alloy (6xxx). In this study, by importing the model size and the force parameters, the force distribution of the control arm was analyzed with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method. The structure of the arm has been optimized. The aluminum alloy control arm has been made finally and the weight has been remarkably reduced by 39 %.

Abstract:It has been the core problem for the development of automotive industry to lighten automotive, decrease fuel consumption and reduce pollution of discharge gas. The lightweight materials are very important for lightening auto-body. In the present study, with the new style passenger car as the prototype, when using aluminum alloy to replace 11 typical auto-body parts, the total weight can be reduced 53.1kg and the lightweight effect is 64.5%. According to the crash simulation, compared the deformation of entire car, the crash force to the rigid wall, velocities, accelerations, and energy-absorbing ability of main parts, the results of crashworthiness simulation verified the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:Due to increasing competition globally among car manufacturing companies cost optimization is one of the major concerns in the automotive industries right from inception stage to the final product delivery along with maintaining its highest quality. Nowadays, rising demand for concept car, automobiles with latest technology, aesthetics of vehicles with safety concern, high strength and light weight results technological advancement in sheet metal forming and innovative material development like different grades of high strength steels and lightweight aluminium alloys. In 2015 with the initiative of the Imperial College London a research consortium was established under the umbrella Low Cost Materials Processing Technologies for Mass Production of Lightweight Vehicles. The primary aim of this project is to provide affordable low cost weight reduction in mass production of vehicles considering the entire life-cycle. The technological process solution for HFQ™ of Al-alloys is presented which greatly helped in reducing weight and increasing the strength.

Abstract:China is currently vigorously implementing the "energy conservation and emission reduction" and "dual carbon" strategies. As the most resource-advantaged light metal material in China, Magnesium (Mg) alloy is progressively expanding its application in automobile, rail transportation, aerospace, medical, and electronic products. Chongqing University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Australian National University have conducted extensive research on the preparation, properties, and processes of Mg alloys. In the past 20 years, the proportion of Mg alloy in the automotive industry has gradually expanded, whereas currently the design and development of Mg alloy parts for automobiles has rarely been reported. Thus, the application models and typical parts cases of Mg alloy are summarized mainly from the four systems of the whole vehicle (body system, chassis system, powertrain system, interior, and exterior system). Subsequently, two actual original equipment manufacturers (OEM) cases are used to introduce the development logic of reliable die-cast Mg alloy, including forward design, formability analysis, process design analysis, structural redesign, manufacturing, and testing, aiming to share the methods, processes, and focus of attention of automotive OEMs for developing Mg alloy parts to enhance the confidence and motivation of applying Mg alloy in automotive field. Eventually, the multiple challenges faced by Mg alloy materials are sorted out and how to face these challenges are discussed. National policies and regulations, environmental protection and energy saving, and consumer demand will continue to promote the application of Mg.

Abstract:Since the first generation of 7xxx superhard aluminum alloy was investigated in 1930, hitherto the fifth generation aluminum alloy materials with high comprehensive properties such as high static strength, high strength, heat resistance, high toughness, damage resistance, low density and low quenching sensitivity have been improved and developed. This paper reviews the progress of 7xxx aluminum alloy materials in composition, microstructure, properties, preparation methods, heat treatment strengthening and applications from 2014 to 2021. The effect of adding trace elements on microstructure and properties of 7xxx series alloy and the problems existing in aging precipitation characteristics and reinforcement mechanism are discussed. The future development direction of 7xxx superhard aluminum alloy is prospected by optimizing heat treatment technological, adding appropriate trace elements to alloy and controlling alloy microstructure.

Abstract:Firstly,this article briefly introduces the applications of high strength aluminum alloys in aviation and rail transit. The evolution of aviation aluminum alloys using micro-alloying method is then retrospected.The effect of micro alloying elements on the properties of the high strength aluminum alloy is subsequently reviewed.Finally,based on the characteristics of rail transit area, the comprehensive consideration of weld-ability and corrosion resistance of micro-alloying alloys should be underlined and correspon-ding systematic research should be required for the high strength aluminum alloys in rail transit.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing concern about the energy and environment crises, the demand for the automotive weight reduction has been required more than usually expected. The wide application of aluminum alloy sheets with high specific strength in automotive bodies has become an important development direction. Various forming techniques have been introduced to automobile manufacturing due to the low formability of aluminum alloy sheets at room temperature. The paper outlines several special forming techniques for aluminum parts in small batch production, including superplastic forming, sheet hydroforming, and so on. It reviews various heat treatment-stamping integrated techniques for aluminum parts in large batch production, including intermediate annealing-stamping integrated method, warm stamping, stamping in the W temper and hot stamping. Their development history and present situation are outlined. The key issue of the property controlling during forming is stressed for these heat treatment-stamping integrated techniques of aluminum alloy sheets. The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are also discussed. Finally, the development trend and promising research topics of the aluminum sheets stamping technology are presented for future studies.

Abstract:In recent decades, there are many requirements stated against car manufacturing both from the customers’ side and also as legal requirements to reduce harmful emissions to provide increased environment protection, as well as to achieve increased safety, higher comfort and more economical vehicles. To meet these often contradictory requirements, application of light weight design principles is one of the most widely applied solutions. There are two main trends for producing lightweight automotive structures with low cost manufacturing which are particularly valid for car body elements produced by sheet metal forming. Application of high strength steels is one of the main possibilities. Various generations of high strength steels (e.g. DP-steels, TRIP steels, XHSS and UHSS advanced high strength steels) were developed in the last decades which are already successfully applied in the automotive industry. The application of lightweight alloy materials – particularly various aluminum alloys – is regarded as the other possible solution to meet the requirements of lightweight car body constructions. Aluminum has even higher weight reduction potential than steel materials, but aluminium has lower formability than steel; replacing steel with lighter materials such as aluminum can be costly and is not simply straightforward. Aluminum sheet, in particular, has lower formability at room temperature than typical sheet steels. This is one of the main reasons that recently the hot forming of aluminum alloys came to the forefront of research activities. In this paper, some recent results obtained within a joint European project entitled Low Cost Materials Processing Technologies for Mass Production of Lightweight Vehicles will be introduced.
