Abstract:The iron and steel production industry entails high resource and energy consumption and generates a serious amount of waste and pollution. The need to conserve energy and reduce emissions underlines the importance of correctly and comprehensively evaluating the iron and steel industrial systems. Properly evaluating the utilization levels of resources and energy is one of the important tasks. In this publication I introduce a thermodynamic exergy analysis method to analyze and evaluate iron and steel industrial systems. The utilization levels of resources and energy are evaluated by comparing the result of the exergy calculation for the traditional production chain and for the material and energy recycling eco-industrial chain. The systemic problems are thus revealed and measures for improvement are proposed, providing a theoretical basis for planning and construction of iron and steel eco-industrial parks. ©2009 IEEE.
Effects of Thermal Desorption Temperature Up to 500°C on the Thermophysical Properties and Fertility of Soil in Organic-Contaminated Sites

Abstract:High-temperature thermal desorption is effective for remediating organic-contaminated sites, but its damage to soil functions and high energy consumption raise concerns. In this work, the variation of fertility indicators of two soils with thermal treatment temperature was investigated experimentally. To overcome the difficulties in measuring soil thermophysical properties under sealing and high-temperature conditions, two apparatus matching with the Hot Disk device were established and by which massive data were measured. The results show that, as temperature rises up to 500°C, the combustion and decomposition of organic components and soil minerals gradually enhance, leading to a decrease in most fertility indicators, but an increase in grain size and pH. Available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium decrease with temperature rise first, but increase over 400°C. Soil thermal conductivity and specific heat are positively correlated with temperature and water content. Water diffusion will intensify over 40∼60°C, leading to an intense increase in soil thermal conductivity. The results are expected to provide data basis and theoretical guidance for the comprehensive consideration of remediation effects, land reuse, and energy consumption in practical applications of thermal desorption remediation.
Disturbance and Restoration of Soil Microbial Communities after In-Situ Thermal Desorption in a Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Contaminated Site.

Abstract:Thermal desorption technology has been widely used for the remediation of organic contaminated soil, but the heating process may alter the soil properties and its safety reutilization. After thermal remediation, the target pollutants including chloroform, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, 1,2,3-trichloropropane and vinyl chloride in the chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated site were reduced significantly. The soil microbial α-diversity was also reduced by more than half. Notably, the relative abundance of Chloroflexi decreased by 9.0%, while Firmicutes had a 9.0% increase after thermal remediation. By water regulation and exogenous microorganism addition, the soil microbial community could not be restored to its initial state before thermal remediation in a relatively short time (30 days). The relative abundance of Proteobacteria increased from 25.4% to 41.7% and 51.0% by water regulation and exogenous microorganism addition, respectively. The modularity of the microbial co-occurrence network was strengthened after microbial restoration, but the interaction among microorganisms was weakened. Thermal remediation might be conducive to the C- and N-cycle related processes, but severely weakened the sulfide oxidation processes. Notably, microbial restoration would benefit the recovery of the S-cycle functional groups. These results provided a new perspective for the safety reutilization of soil after thermal remediation.
Analytical Model and Experiment for Electro-Kinetic Remediation of Contaminated Soil Considering Thermal Diffusion

Abstract:Electro-kinetic remediation (EKR) can effectively remove heavy metal contaminants in soil, however little research is conducted for analytical theory due to the complex transport processes and the lack of effective calculation methods. Considering that the heat released from electrode will lead to a temperature gradient in soil affecting the removing efficiency of EKR, a novel analytical model associated with experimental and numerical validations for one-dimensional transport of heavy metal ions (HMIs) is established. The new analytical model incorporates electro-osmosis, electro-migration, hydraulic-osmosis, diffusion, adsorption and thermal diffusion, and a new concept named average removed degree is introduced to describe the remediation efficiency. Non-isothermal distribution condition is observed by the EKR experiments and an ideal remediation effect is achieved. Finally, the effects of different parameters on transport process are analyzed. The results show that the increase of the Soret coefficient accelerates the migration of HMIs. Meanwhile, both the increase of electric potential gradient and hydraulic gradient is beneficial to the remediation of contaminated soil, where the effect of electric potential gradient is more significant. In addition, the changes of HMIs concentration in the cathode boundary have minimal influence on the overall remediation efficiency but an obvious effect on the cathode region.
Analysis on the degradation of organic pollutants in textile wastewater treatment process by GC-MS

Abstract:Textile wastewater is intractable industrial wastewater because of its big quantity and high concentration of complicated constituents. The research object was the wastewater from each unit of a sewage treatment plant in Zhejiang province, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to determine the degradation process of organic pollutants in treatment processes. The results show that wastewater samples from the primary settling tank, the secondary sedimentation tank and the final settling tank respectively contained 50, 40 and 30 kinds of organic matters, including chloroform, 1, 2-dichloroethane, 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane and other eight kinds of organic matters which belong to environmental priority control contaminants.Acetophenone, chloroform, 2-chloro-2-methyl butane and other five kinds of organic matters are chosen as the characteristic pollutants in textile wastewater. The research has important significance on the treatment and reuse of textile wastewater.

Abstract:Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) is an effective approach to eliminate heavy metal contaminants from soil and pore water. However, only a few studies have been conducted on related analytical theory because of the complexity of transport processes and the lack of effective calculation methods. In this study, a novel analytical model is proposed to investigate the one-dimensional transport of heavy metal ions (HMIs), encompassing electro-osmosis, electro-migration, hydraulic osmosis, diffusion, adsorption, and thermal diffusion. A comprehensive analysis is conducted to study the effects of key parameters on the transport process. Several important insights are gained, e.g., an increase in the Soret coefficient accelerates the migration of HMIs. Meanwhile, an increase in both the electric potential gradient and the hydraulic gradient is beneficial for the remediation of contaminated soil, although the effect of the electric potential gradient is more significant.
Energy-saving Investigation of Organic Material Recovery from Wastewater Via Thermal Coupling Extractive Distillation Combined with Heat Pump Based on Thermoeconomic and Environmental Analysis

Abstract:Cyclohexane and sec-butyl alcohol are widely used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The separation of cyclohexane/sec-butyl alcohol/water azeotropic mixture is of great significance for mitigating environmental risk, recycling solvents, and maintaining developmental sustainability. Based on the COSMO-SAC model, the infinite dilution activity coefficients of the components were calculated, and the final solvent was further obtained by relative volatility and solvent power screening. Taking the total annual cost as the objective function, the extractive distillation process is optimized based on a sequential iterative optimization algorithm. To further reduce the process energy consumption, several energy-saving processes were explored. Energy-saving processes are compared in terms of total annual cost, CO2 emissions, and thermodynamic efficiency. It was found that the total annual cost and thermodynamic efficiency of the processes show an increasing trend, while CO2 emissions show a decreasing trend. The results of stage-exergy indicate that the processes with heat pump are relatively small. The heat pump combined with the thermal coupling extractive distillation process exhibits better thermoeconomic and environmental performance. It provides theoretical guidance for improving the separation and recovery of value organics and energy-saving optimization of processes, which conforms to the theme of sustainable and environmental development.
Theoretical Perfection and Application of Entransy Analysis Method on Absorption Systems

Abstract:In thermal energy utilization scenarios, absorption systems have been widely and effectively utilized as heat exchange devices. However, existing thermal research methods on absorption systems for these scenarios have limitations. Therefore, the entransy parameter, which is applicable for analyzing the heat exchange process is chosen to study. The entransy balance relationship of the absorption system is theoretically analyzed, and the entransy analysis method is further perfected to break through the limitations. First, the entransy imbalance of the reversible absorption cycle is proved, and the reason for this imbalance is clarified that two heat-work conversion processes at different temperatures occur inside the cycle. Then, the working fluid's entransy change during the conversion process is theoretically derived and defined, and a new parameter: conversion entransy is defined based on it. Moreover, the comprehensive entransy balance equation and comprehensive entransy analysis method of absorption systems are further proposed. Finally, a specific case study is carried out, and this method is compared with the existing exergy analysis method and entransy analysis method without considering the conversion entransy respectively. By using this method, the optimal process form of the absorption heat exchanger can be directly obtained without numerical simulation calculations, demonstrating significant advantages.

Abstract:This work aims to understand the gasification performance of municipal solid waste (MSW) by means of thermodynamic analysis. Thermodynamic analysis is based on the assumption that the gasification reactions take place at the thermodynamic equilibrium condition, without regard to the reactor and process characteristics. First, model components of MSW including food, green wastes, paper, textiles, rubber, chlorine-free plastic, and polyvinyl chloride were chosen as the feedstock of a steam gasification process, with the steam temperature ranging from 973 K to 2273 K and the steam-to-MSW ratio (STMR) ranging from 1 to 5. It was found that the effect of the STMR on the gasification performance was almost the same as that of the steam temperature. All the differences among the seven types of MSW were caused by the variation of their compositions. Next, the gasification of actual MSW was analyzed using this thermodynamic equilibrium model. It was possible to count the inorganic components of actual MSW as silicon dioxide or aluminum oxide for the purpose of simplification, due to the fact that the inorganic components mainly affected the reactor temperature. A detailed comparison was made of the composition of the gaseous products obtained using steam, hydrogen, and air gasifying agents to provide basic knowledge regarding the appropriate choice of gasifying agent in MSW treatment upon demand.

Abstract:In this study, a method was proposed for calculating the thermodynamic entropy increase Delta S in a water body after receiving excess discharge of organics and nutrients in order to quantitatively assess the impact of pollutants discharge on aquatic systems. The enthalpy change was evaluated using the standard thermodynamic data according to the possible chemical and/or biochemical reactions such as organic oxidation, nitrification/denitrification, and phosphorus precipitation, for the recovery of water quality to the background level. A series of equations were established for calculating the Delta S associated with the decomposition or removal of TOC, NO3-N, NO2-N, NH3-N and TP. The values of Delta S corresponding to unit mass (per g) of these pollutants were calculated as 54.0 kJ/K, 2.91 kJ/K, 10.01 kJ/K, 28.51 kJ/K and 2.81 kJ/K, respectively. Besides, the applicability of the proposed method was proved by a scenario analysis regarding effluent quality control and surface water quality protection in China. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Thermodynamic and Sensitivity Analyses on Drying Subprocesses of Various Evaporative Dryers: A Comparative Study

Abstract:Drying is an energy intensive process, which takes a big portion of global energy consumption. The innovation of energy-saving drying techniques are crucial for the sustainable development. To achieve energy saving of evaporative drying, exergy destructions and losses in the dryers should be located. In this study, the drying process is divided into three subprocesses, i.e., heat transfer, moisture evaporation and diffusion, and drying exhaust emission. Thermodynamic models of dryers are developed, and performance of evaporative dryers, including rotary, solar, spouted bed, etc. Are analyzed and compared. The exergy consumption rate, i.e., the exergy consumption rate to dehydrate 1 kg water, is defined and used to evaluate the energy utilization of dryers. The exergy consumption rate of dryers ranges from 330 kJ (kg H2O)-1 to 10,490 kJ (kg H2O)-1, which is mainly related to the energy consumption rate and energy grade. The irreversibility of the three subprocesses of dryers are compared, e.g., for the rotary dryer with hot air at 300 degrees C as heat source, the exergy loss and destruction of the subprocesses are 415.7, 451.3, and 293.4 kJ (kg H2O) -1, respectively. The results of this study can provide guidance to enhance the energy utilization efficiency of evaporation dryers.

Abstract:It's well known that there are various methods being used in seawater desalination, which lead to different energy consumptions. However, the theory of thermodynamics reveals that the theoretical energy consumption (TEC, equivalent to the minimum work Wmin) of seawater desalination is only related to the initial and final state. Thermodynamic analysis of the TEC can contribute to the energy-saving of seawater desalination. In this paper, a novel mathematical model is proposed to calculate the TEC of seawater desalination concerning the recovery ratio, by assuming seawater to be aqueous NaCl–MgCl2–MgSO4 solution rather than aqueous NaCl solution. The activity coefficients of salts and the osmotic coefficients of water are calculated by the Pitzer model. The effect of ionic strength, recovery ratio, the activity coefficients of salts and the osmotic coefficients of water, seawater substitution on the TEC are also discussed. It is shown that ionic strength, recovery ratio, activity coefficients of salts and osmotic coefficients of water, seawater substitution have their different effects.
Tg Analysis and Kinetic Study of Organic Constituents in Wastewater from Coal-Gasification Process

Abstract:In the paper, the thermal reactivity of organic constituents from coal-gasification wastewater is performed through physicochemical and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The effects of reaction atmosphere, oxygen concentration, heating rate, and final temperature on both solids conversion and degradation rate are experimentally studied. The results indicate that organic constituents mainly consist of aliphatic hydrocarbon, phenols, and ammonium, and so on. The thermal degradation of organic constituents in various atmospheres can be divided into four regions: 100-200, 200-300, 300-410, and 410-900 degrees C. The TG/DTG curves present considerable differences in the last region compared with that in the first three regions. In addition, the degradation rate shows a considerable increase and moves toward higher temperature region with heating rate. Furthermore, the kinetic parameters of organic constituents are analyzed by one multi-heating rate method. The calculated results show that apparent activation energy of organic constituents varies between 82.8 and 91.3 kJ mol(-1) under various reaction atmospheres. This information is potentially useful for the design and retrofitting of the large-scale equipment to recover industrial wastewater. Electrochemical Oxidation Combined with Adsorption : A Novel Route for Low Concentration Organic Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:Electrochemical oxidation treatment is an efficient method for the mineralization of bio-refractory organics, but not an economic method for its high energy consumption. The results of electrochemical degradation of Acid Red G in aqueous solution showed that high organic concentration was beneficial for reducing the average energy consumption. Adsorption method has good enrichment effect on low concentration organic wastewater, but it has no degradation ability. In order to overcome the weakness of these two methods, a novel route which use the adsorption method as the pretreatment method for electrocatalytic treatment, was proposed for resolving the high energy consumption issue, especially for the low concentration organic wastewater. The results of by using the Acid Red G, Acid Red 6B and Methyl orange as the turget indicated that the combined process would be a good alternative for the organic wastewater treatment, especially when the organic concentration was low. After electrochemical treatment, the biotoxicity of the concentrated solution is reduced and the biodegradability is improved. These indicated that the treated solution could be returned to the biochemical treatment system and be further treated by the biochemical method.

Abstract:Thermodynamic analysis can discern those energy requirements which might be decreased in the separation system. In this work a theoretical model based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics was established to analyze the free energy change and the key points governing separation efficiency in gas membrane separation. Mass transfer in membranes was treated to be a two-step process in the model: species selectively permeate across membrane to form a series of local permeate gases, then the local permeate gases converge into a bulk permeate stream. Thus the total work required by the membrane process was identified as (i) the work to drive mass permeation, (ii) the work wasted by permeate mixing, and (iii) the minimum separation work. The analysis of two typical systems – the recycle membrane cascade (RMC) and the continuous membrane column (CMC) – revealed that the work wasted by permeate mixing seriously affects the free energy efficiency. This work wastage can be reduced by retrofitting process frameworks. Subsequently, the analysis was used to identify the serious work-losing stages in the RMC. Finally, a partially retrofitted RMC was proposed with tangible reductions in both equipment investment and energy consumption.
Application of energy-saving hybrid distillation-pervaporation process for recycling organics from wastewater based on thermoeconomic and environmental analysis

Abstract:<p>Acetonitrile and n-propanol play an indispensable role in the manufacture of perfume and photosensitive materials, and the demand for these chemicals in China is growing. In this work, a series of processes was explored for achieving sustainable and green separation of wastewater containing acetonitrile and n-propanol. The solvent with high separation performance was determined by the combination of relative volatility and biological toxicity. Based on the sequential iterative optimization sequence and taking the minimum total annual costs (TAC) as the objective function, the program written by Visual Basic software was used to optimize the parameters of the basic process. The steam recompression assisted distillation and pervaporation (PV) technology are combined to reduce the energy consumption. Through the Heat Exchanger Network Synthesis (HENs) option, the heat recovery in the process was further improved. Furthermore, exergy and environmental analyses were further used to assess the feasibility of several separation processes. The results showed that compared to the basic process, the TAC and exergy loss of vapor recompression assisted distillation process were reduced by 43.6% and 12.65%, respectively. The use of heat integration and PV technology further reduced energy consumption. The TAC and emissions of novel hybrid process were saved by 74.6% and 53.87%, respectively, which indicates the feasibility of the processes for continuously updated cleaner production.</p>

Abstract:The combustible solid waste is characterized with various kinds and complex composition, which needs to reduce its pollution in the treatment and utility processes. The aim of this project is to propose the pseudo-compositions reaction model for the thermochemical reaction of the combustible solid waste, to clarify their heat and mass transfer principles and reaction models at different oxidant-concentration atmosphere, to elucidate the inter-impact of complex components, and to study impact of the oxidant on dioxins-related compound to find out a new kind reaction type to lower dioxins emission. The research results in the first two years, the year of 2011 to 2012, are reviewed in this mid-term report. A database of different waste pyrolysis/combustion was established, in which the proximate and ultimate analysis and kinetics parameters were included. The pseudo- compositions system was suggested. Cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, pectin and starch are selected as pseudo-compositions for food residue and wood-like biomass waste; PE, PS and PVC are picked as those for plastic waste; terylene and cellulose are as those for textile waste. The characteristics and kinetics of pyrolysis/combustion of the typical solid waste were investigated at different atmosphere. Based on these, the kinetic models were proposed. In the investigation on chemical looping combustion, different iron-based oxygen- carriers with good reactivity and cycle reaction performance were picked out and studied using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR). The lab-scale and mid-scale oxygen-carriers test system for chemical looping reaction were designed.

Abstract:The contamination of soils by mineral oils presents a significant environmental challenge, particularly due to the widespread use of petroleum products in various industrial sectors. This study investigates the efficiency of microwave heating compared to conventional resistance heating for the thermal desorption of mineral oil from contaminated soils. The experimental results demonstrated that microwave heating offers superior performance in terms of pollutant removal efficiency, energy consumption, and the preservation of soil's physical and chemical properties. This study further conducted a kinetic analysis of the desorption process, revealing that microwave heating follows a first-order kinetic model and requires lower activation energy than conventional methods. The findings suggest that microwave-assisted thermal desorption is a highly effective and energy-efficient technology for soil remediation, providing a potential alternative to conventional techniques. This research offers valuable insights into optimizing thermal desorption processes for environmental remediation, with implications for broader applications in soil treatment.
