Application of Free Amino Acid Formula in Children with Cow′s Milk Allergy

Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of free amino acid formula in children with cow′s milk allergy. Methods Thirty-one children with cow′s milk allergy were selected in Department of Gastroenterology,Nanjing Children′s Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University from Oct.2009 to Oct.2010.They were treated with free amina acid formula.Height for age Z-score,weight for age Z-score and weight for height Z-score were used to evaluate the growth and development of these children;SCORAD index(atopic dermatitis points,SCORing atopic dermatitis) was used to evaluate the severity of eczema according to the scope of dermatosis,the severity of dermatosis and the subjective symptoms.All relevant clinical features,laboratory data,Z scores,SCORAD index before and after treatment,and outcomes were analyzed by t test,Fisher′s exact test. Results The mean age of 31 patients with cow′s milk allergy was(3.46±2.22) months.There was no significant difference in sex distribution,rural-urban distribution and the feeding patterns.After 2 months treatment,children with eczema improved the situation in a significant difference(SCORAD index:21.70±20.24 vs 2.8±4.1,t=0.51,P=0.00).The gastrointestinal symptoms:vomiting,diarrhea and bloody stool were improved significantly(P=0.00,0.02,0.00).The weight of children with low weight was significantly increased(weight for age Z-score:-0.58±1.08 vs-0.08±0.89,P=0.048).After treatment,the white blood cell count [(12.58±4.82)× 109 L-1 vs(10.36±2.22)× 109 L-1;t=2.32,P=0.024] and the eosinophil count [(1.62±2.05)× 109 L-1 vs(0.42±0.50)×109 L-1;t=3.14,P=0.003] of these patients were decreased significantly. Conclusion The use of free amino acid formula is an effective treatment method for cow′s milk allergy.
