Abstract:The photoluminescence (PL) properties of a series of tri-block copolymers of 9-vinylcarbazole, methyl methacrylate and terbium-methacrylate complex were investigated. In solution, the PL spectra of the copolymers consist of two emission bands, one in the 340～500 nm region and another in 480～600 nm, corresponding to the π~*→π transitions of the carbazole moieties and the f-f transitions of the terbium ion, respectively. The results show that PL intensity from terbium complex moiety in the copolymer increases with the increasing of the polarity of solvent, whereas the emission from carbazole groups in the copolymer decreasing. The dependence of PL intensity of the copolymers on different concentration, temperature, ligand and rare earth content is also discussed in detail. In the solid state, the emission from carbazole groups in the copolymer is suppressed effectively and pure green emission, with a linewidth (FWHM) of less than 10 nm for the main emission peak, is obtained from the copolymers. The significant difference between the PL intensities of carbazole groups and terbium complex moieties of the copolymers in different states is attributed to the phenomenon of "solid state quenching" which is resulted mainly from the formation of excimers of carbazole groups. Thus, these copolymers appear to be promising candidates for pure green emission in thin film polymer light-emitting devices, since they have in their main chain both the hole-transporting property of the carbazole unit and the pure green emission characteristics of the terbium complex.
