Abstract:The following conclusions are arrived through analyzing the experiments: 1) The peculiarity of the high- T c oxide superconductors BaPbBiO, LaSrCuO and YBaCuO is that their pseudo-Coulomb potentials μ ∗ are negative quantities. 2) The superconductivity of these three oxides can be understood within the framework of the conventional BCS-Eliashberg theory if the said peculiarity is taken into account in the theory.

Abstract:The superconducting oxide DyxBa(1−x)CuO3 has been successfully prepared by the ceramic technology. The superconducting critical temperature, TC, of the sample of composition x=0.625 is 94K, the transition width δTc=1.5K and Tc (π=0)=90.2K. The a.c. magnetic susceptibility measurements show a large diamagnetism at 94K and a saturation of diamagnetic susceptibility near 80K. Although the element Dy has magnetic moment the superconducting transition temperature Tc is as high as that in Y-Ba-Cu-O system. This might mean that Cu-O or Cu-O-Ba system has an essential role for the high-Tc superconductivity.

Abstract:YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) is a crucial aspect of research in the field of superconducting applications, where its high anisotropy is generally undesirable in strong power transmission. However, from a dialectical perspective, a thorough investigation of material anisotropy can offer an additional degree of freedom to tune potential properties and design innovative devices. This work employed pulsed laser deposition to fabricate a high-quality YBCO thin film (Tc = 89 K) and used the Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometer (MMSE) to determine the complete dielectric tensor of the YBCO film across the ultraviolet to near-infrared spectrum (245-1000 nm), enabling a comprehensive, quantitative study of the optical anisotropy of YBCO. It provided optical constants and dielectric function spectra for different axes. We found that YBCO exhibits birefringence and dichroism both in-plane and out-of-plane. By combining standard critical point (SCP) analysis and first-principles calculations, we identified specific interband transitions related to SCP in the YBCO dielectric spectra, revealing the physical essence of anisotropic optical transitions from a quantum mechanical standpoint. Temperature-dependent studies of the transitions and optical constants were conducted. The work fills a partial void in the optical parameters of the anisotropy of YBCO and holds relevance for understanding the origins of copper-based hightemperature superconductivity.

Abstract:Superconductor-Insulator transition and superconductivity have been studied by the measurements of resistivity, specific heat, XPS, a.c.magnetic susceptibility and X-ray diffraction in Ba–Y–Cu–O system. The experimental results show that the S-I (superconductor-insulator) transition which might be driven by the electrons occurs near x=0 and the high electronic density of states at Fermi level usually associated with the high Tc in this system. A λ-type phase transition which is probably related to the antiferromagnetism was also observed near 12K.

Abstract:The R(H) and Jc(T) of single phase material Bi3PbCa3Sr3Cu4Oy were investigated. As the temperature belows 65K, the sample likely shows the characteristics of homogeneous superconductors. Very high critical current density and no negative magnetoresistance are observed. This distinct property distinguishes the new material from other ceramic superconductors.

Abstract:Based on data of neutron diffraction measurements, the oxidation states in Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-δ system are determined by bond valence sums (BVS) calculation. It is found that a close correlation between the BVS value of Cu(2) and superconducting critical temperature (Tc) exists. We believe that the increase of Pr content leads to the variation of charge distribution when the content of oxygen remains almost constant. At the same time ,the BVS value of Cu(l) and Cu(2) decreases,while that of Y(Pr) increases,and the holes in CuO2 plane are partly localized in Pr-O bond. The quenching of superconductivity by Pr ions is mainly attributed to this localization of the holes in CuO2 plane by Pr ions.

Abstract:High T c superconductivity has been observed in a new U-Y-Ba-Cu-O system at ambient pressure. The zero-resistance temperature in the sample with nominal composition of U 0.1 Y 1.1 Ba 0.8 CuO 4−δ is 87K with a width of 2K. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that none of the peaks could be fitted to the uranium oxides and the other raw material structure, and its pattern might be attributed to new multiple phases with structure different from the known single-phase superconducting oxides.

Abstract:We have studied two kinds of superconducting samples of Tc about 90K with nominal compositions Ba 3 Y 2 Cu 5 O 12+x and Ba 0.5 Y 4.5 Cu 5 O 12+x , respectively, by means of convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) and selected area electron diffration (SAED) in more detail. The common phase has been found to be a pseudotetragonal superstructure based on a cubic perovskite subcell of a=0.39 nm. Its lattice parameters are a=a p , c=3a p and its space group is Pmmm. This phase is considered to be responsible for the superconductivity at about 90K. This is the major phase in Ba 3 Y 2 Cu 5 O 12+x , but the minor phase in Ba 0.5 Y 4.5 Cu 5 O 12+x . The lattice parameters and the symmetry of the other phases in Ba 0.5 Y 4.5 Cu 5 O 12+x have also been determined.

Abstract:We proposed that BCS-like Hamiltonian with quasi-two-dimensional tight-binding electrons describe the Ba-La-Cu-O system approximately. T c was calculated under the cases both negligible and non-negligible weak coupling between neighbor layers. It is found that the results we obtained approach that of experiments.
A Coherent Theory for Superconductivity through Integration of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer Theory and Density Functional Theory

Abstract:A coherent theory for superconductivity of both conventional and unconventional superconductors is currently lacking. We propose an integrated theory based on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory and density functional theory (DFT), suggesting that superconductivity originates from the formation of a symmetry-broken superconducting configuration (SCC) due to atomic perturbation of the normal conducting configuration (NCC). This perturbation creates straight one-dimensional tunnels (SODTs) for electrons and/or holes, which act as resistance-free superhighways, akin to Cooper pairs in the BCS theory. The formation of SODTs implies that the electron-phonon interaction in the BCS theory can be predicted by the difference in charge densities between SCC and NCC through DFT. Our integrated theory highlights that in conventional superconductors, SODTs are part of the bulk material and are easily disrupted by phonon vibrations, resulting in a low critical superconducting temperature (Tc). Conversely, in unconventional superconductors such as YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO7), SODTs are protected by a layered pontoon structure with very weak bonding to the bulk material, maintaining stability at higher temperatures and leading to a much higher Tc. This integrated theory is validated for 13 conventional superconductors of 18 pure elements examined in this work, including the predicted superconductivity in Cu, Ag, Au, Sb, and Bi at 0 K and 0 GPa, and one unconventional superconductor, YBCO7. Our discovery indicates that DFT can be a practical tool for predicting superconductors, enabling a systematic search for new superconducting materials in the future.

Abstract:Systematic microwave surface impedance measurements of YBCO single crystals grown in $BaZrO_3$ crucibles reveal new properties that are not directly seen in similar measurements of other YBCO samples. Two key observations obtained from complex conductivity are: a new normal conductivity peak at around 80K and additional pairing below 65K. High pressure oxygenation of one of the crystals still yields the same results ruling out any effect of macroscopic segregation of O-deficient regions. A single complex order parameter cannot describe these data, and the results suggest at least two superconducting components. Comparisons with model calculations done for various decoupled two-component scenarios (i.e. s+d, d+d) are presented. Systematics of three single crystals show that the 80K quasiparticle peak is correlated with the normal state inelastic scattering rate. Close to Tc, the data follow a mean-field behavior. Overall, our results strongly suggest the presence of multiple pairing temperature and energy scales in $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.95}$.

Abstract:The single phase of Y1−xPrxBaSrCu3O7−δ has been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction and temperature dependence of the resistivity. It is found that the system undergoes an orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transition at x=0.5. Superconductivity still survives until x=0.7. These results have been compared with those of the Y1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7−δ system, which was discussed in terms of the Pr-O covalent bonding effect.

Abstract:Based on the singly occupied aiσ picture and the mechanism of charge fluctuation, the effective Hamiltonian of the two-band Hubbard model is derived by using the degeneracy perturbation theory for the noncuprate compound Ba1−xKxBiO3. By considering the next-neighbour pairing of two opposite spin holes in coordinate space, the Green's function equation of motion and the superconductivity equation are obtained. Furthermore, how the superexchange interaction and the hopping energy affect the next-neighbour pairing has been reasonably explained, and the superconductivity window is due to the Cooper pairing in coordinate space.

Abstract:The intermediate YBa2Cu3O7-δsamples of single phase with transitional structure from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase are prepared by quenching at different temperatures and investigated systematically. From X-ray diffraction (XRD), R-T curve and ac susceptibility measurements, it can be concluded that the structure transits from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase as the quenching temperature decreases; the YBa2Cu3O7-δ samples with tetragonal phase are nonsuperconductive till 4.2K; the critical temperature depends on the degree of orthorhombic distortion in the intermediate samples; the possible existence of a structure phase transition near 100K for the non-superconductive tetragonal phase is discovered for the first time. The electrical conductance property at high temperature region (higher than 100K) for the samples quenched at higher temperature can be explained in terms of the affection of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. A novel material is obtained by modifying pristine YBCO superconductor via simultaneous partial substitution of Sr for Ba and Se for O. The intended stoichiometry was [math]SrxCu3[math]Sex with [math], 0.75 and 1; and [math] yielded the most interesting results considered in detail. We confirmed that Se atoms indeed enter the superconductor lattice cell. The obtained polycrystalline material contains five phases, with the major phase ([math][math]wt.%) being [math][math]Cu3O6[math]. The synthesized superconductor demonstrates unique properties, including (i) two superconducting transitions with [math][math]K and [math][math]K yielding the Wohlleben effect; (ii) strong-coupling d-wave superconductivity (with [math] 5); (iii) Schottky anomaly in the heat capacity; and, most importantly, (iv) a very unusual anomaly in the heat capacity which can be associated with the quantum criticality typically observable at much higher fields. The fact that the quantum criticality is visible in weaker fields ([math][math]T) may open opportunities for exploration of the interplay between superconductivity and pair density waves by wide research community particularly when its pure phase is available. To facilitate this, the stability of single-phase [math][math]Cu3O6[math] is analyzed using machine learning methods.

Abstract:The electronic structure, lattice dynamics, and electron-phonon coupling (EPC) of the newly discovered (Ba,K)SbO$_3$ superconductors are investigated by first-principles calculations. The EPC of (Ba,K)SbO$_3$ is significantly enhanced by considering non-local electronic correlation using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid exchange-correlation functional (HSE06). The EPC strength {\lambda} of Ba$_{0.35}$K$_{0.65}$SbO$_3$ is strongly increased from 0.33 in local-density approximation calculations to 0.59 in HSE06 calculations, resulting in a superconducting transition temperature Tc of about 14.9 K, which is in excellent agreement with experimental value of ~ 15 K. Our findings suggest (Ba,K)SbO$_3$ are extraordinary conventional superconductors, where non-local electronic correlation expands the bandwidth, enhances the EPC, and boosts the Tc. Moreover, we find both {\lambda} and Tc depend crucially on the K-doping level for (Ba,K)SbO$_3$ and (Ba,K)SbO$_3$ compounds. (Ba,K)SbO$_3$ have stronger EPC strength and higher Tc than those of (Ba,K)SbO$_3$ at the same K-doping level.

Abstract:The pseudo-elasticity in YBa2Cu3O7- delta has been investigated by a mechanical method from room temperature to 79 K. Several ferroelastic-type loops were observed near room temperature, 240, 220 and 170 K. These phenomena are discussed in conjunction with the results of X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:The electronic structure and chemical states of relevant elements of YBa2Fe3O8 are investigated using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), compared with those of YBa2Cu3O7 and SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductors. The typical differences and similarities in core-level and valence-band structures of these systems have been detected, strongly suggesting that the superconductivity have the finite density of states around Fermi level. Several features of O1s, Y3d, Ba3d, and Fe2p core lines in XPS spectra are also carefully compared and analyzed.

Abstract:The Peierls instability in the quasi-2-d La2-x(Ba,Sr)xCuO4 is reexamined by taking the weak interlayer coupling into account. A two-step Peierls transition theory is developed, the general misunderstandings on the Peierls instability are therefore clarified, and a number of experimental anomalies observed in La2CuO4 are well explained. By suggesting an additional change of space group symmetries at the lower transition point, the calculated band structures are also intepreted. The possibility of CDW coexistence with the high-Tc superconductivity, the possible evidence for the 3-d superconductivity of the high-Tc materials are discussed with this theory.

Abstract:Ultrasonic measurement revealed that there are anomalous structural changes near 200 K in single 2212 or 2223 phase samples of Bi(Pb)SrCaCuO. Detailed study showed such anomalous changes are isothermal-like processes and have a characteristics of second order phase transition,accompanying with increase in lattice constants. The elastic properties of these ceramics and related systems are also discussed.
