Abstract:This paper,based on the results of an extensive study regarding the teaching of English for non-English major graduate students in China, raises some issues calling for attention and identifies some areas for research and reform.Efforts should be made in:(1)reforming the traditional knowledge- oriented teaching approach and stressing the development of the students'ability in language use; (2)advocating learner-centeredness and experiential learning and encouraging learner autonomy;(3) taking full advantage of the modern facilities for teaching and tapping the learner potential;(4) emphasizing quality education and improving the students'ability in logical thinking;(5)improving the quality of the teaching staff;and(6)properly handling the relationship between teaching and testing and introducing a scientific evaluation system.
Exploring the Perceived Integrations Between Assessment and Metacognition: A Qualitative Inquiry of Three Award-Winning Teacher Educators' Conceptions of Assessment in a Hong Kong University Context

Abstract:This paper sets out to depict the interactions and integrations between teacher conceptions of assessment and their knowledge of and pedagogical understanding of metacognition. It aims to reframe teacher conceptions of assessment and direct the conceptions to improvement of learning and teaching from a metacognitive perspective, by closely observing the lessons and interviewing three award-winning teacher educators from a Hong Kong university context. The rich qualitative data, deriving from a multiple-case longitudinal design show that the integration was manifested, in different ways, between the conceptions of assessment and knowledge of and pedagogical understanding of metacognition across the three case teachers. Two pertinent issues were discussed concerning perceived dual roles in students in response to both accountability and learning purpose of assessment, and priority of classroom assessment in relation to metacognitive engagement. However exploratory, the perspectives regarding various real classroom decisions and dilemmas, and pedagogical insights that emerged from the specific setting may carry resonance for teachers, researchers and teacher-educators.

Abstract:The study used MALQ developed by Vandergrift et al. (2006), an interview and a listening comprehension test to investigate non-English majors’ metacognitive awareness in English listening and the relationship between metacognitive awareness and listening comprehension performance. The results revealed a lack of metacognitive awareness in the subjects and a significant discrepancy between good listeners and poor listeners. Since metacognitive awareness is proved to influence listening comprehension in a positive way, teachers are suggested to develop students’ autonomous learning ability from this perspective and establish learner-centered listening teaching mode.

Abstract:Language is not only the representation of thinking, but also shapes thinking. Studies on bilinguals suggest that a foreign language plays an important and unconscious role in thinking. In this study, a software—Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count 2007—was used to investigate whether the learning of English as a foreign language (EFL) can foster Chinese high school students’ English analytic thinking (EAT) through the analysis of their English writings with our self-built corpus. It was found that: (1) learning English can foster Chinese learners’ EAT. Chinese EFL learners’ ability of making distinctions, degree of cognitive complexity and degree of thinking activeness have all improved along with the increase of their English proficiency and their age; (2) there exist differences in Chinese EFL learners’ EAT and that of English native speakers, i. e. English native speakers are better in the ability of making distinctions and degree of thinking activeness. These findings suggest that the best EFL learners in high schools have gained native-like analytic thinking through six years’ English learning and are able to switch their cognitive styles as needed.

Abstract:This study investigates the current situation and the effects of metacognitive strategy training on college students’ autonomous learning of English in China. It adopts a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative research methods to collect and analyze data from 201 participants. The results show that the English autonomous learning ability and metacognitive strategy application ability of college students in Tai’an area are at a medium level, and there is a significant strong correlation between the overall metacognitive strategy application ability and autonomous learning ability. Moreover, the study finds that metacognitive strategy training can effectively improve students’ autonomous learning ability and English proficiency, which offers some practical implications and suggestions for English teaching and learning.

Abstract:Listening, which plays a vital part in foreign language learning, is a very important ability for language learners. But non-English majors in colleges have poor listening abilities, so the author carries out research on them. Metacognitive strategy is a higher-order executive skill which involves an ability of consciously using metacognitive knowledge to plan, monitor and evaluate the learning process among all the leaning strategies. In the paper, the author puts metacognitive strategy training into the non-English majors’ listening classes in colleges, for the purpose of helping them cultivate the capacity of using metacognitive strategies, improve their listening achievements and get into the habit of listening autonomously.

Abstract:This empirical study explores metacognition and its relationship with writing performance. Through multivariate analyses, the study investigates the role of metacognitive knowledge and regulation in mediating writing performance. Participants were 882 students from eight universities in China who were learning English as a foreign language (EFL). Results reveal that scores on six parameters of metacognition (declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, conditional knowledge, planning, monitoring, and evaluating) were positively correlated with EFL writing performance. Parameters of procedural knowledge, planning, monitoring, and evaluating were more highly correlated with writing compared with other parameters. Results also revealed that scores on metacognitive regulation can play unique roles in predicting writing proficiency over and above prediction based on scores on metacognitive knowledge. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing metacognitive regulatory skills for university EFL learners' writing performance.

Abstract:The study investigates the effects of second-year university students' metacognitive beliefs and strategies on learning Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL). The analysis shows that metacognitive beliefs, which identify students who are confident about their ability to learn a foreign language, are positively associated with students' CFL achievement results. Successful students are found to have confidence in their abilities.Metacognitive strategies also influence students' CFL achievement results. Students who show self-regulation by monitoring their progress, persevering at tasks and setting realistic goals are more successful. These are strategies that are essential for learners who wish to assume responsibility for their language learning.The study confirms Shen's (Shen, H.H., 2005. An investigation of Chinese character learning strategies among non-native speakers of Chinese. System, 33, 49-68) conclusion that students should be encouraged to analyse their own learning processes in order to improve their metacognitive learning strategies, which will reinforce motivational aspects of self-efficacy.The pedagogical implications of the study are that teachers can help students to think about what happens during the CFL learning process and identify effective strategies, leading to improved language learning and higher levels of self-esteem and confidence. Abstract:Nowadays, the world needs high-quality talents with multicultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence. English majors have advantages in language. They should adapt to the needs of the times and contribute to the practice of Chinese culture going out and the community of human destiny. It is important for both teachers and English majors to master strategies for intercultural communication. The paper takes foreign language teachers and English majors as the research objects. Quantitative and qualitative methods are adopted to investigate the current level of English majors' intercultural communicative competence and the problems encountered in cultivating students' intercultural communicative competence. Based on the results of the survey, it analyzes and puts forward strategies to improve the intercultural communicative competence of English majors. The results of this paper are instructive for teachers to optimize intercultural communicative teaching and develop intercultural communicative competence for English majors and provide new ideas and methods for future research in related fields.

Abstract:At present,teaching of interpretation in China is mainly available to English majors from schools of foreign languages and students from translation schools and institutions.As China's cooperation with foreign countries be- comes more frequent,there is an increasing demand for interdisciplinary talents with both specialized knowledge and interpretation skills.Through a literature review and an analysis of the questionnaires and interviews,this paper of in- vestigation thus presents a probe into the teaching of interpretation for non-English majors in Chinese universities and colleges by describing its status quo,pressing problems,feasibility and appropriate approaches.It attempts to exploit the potential of educational resource and explore effective means to improve interpretation skills of non-English ma- jors.
INVESTIGATING COGNITIVE AND METACOGNITIVE STRATEGY USE DURING AN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST

Abstract:This paper reports on the results of a study of cognitive and metacognitive strategy use and its effect on the studentsu0027 test performance at the tertiary level in a Chinese EFL context. A 18-item survey involving 526 undergraduate non-English majors revealed that: (1) the students had a medium use of both cognitive and metacognitive strategies during the test; (2) cognitive and metacognitive strategy use was closely related to each other, but neither was a predictor for the other; and (3) though cognitive and metacognitive strategy use significantly correlated with the studentsu0027 performance in certain parts of the proficiency test, only the metacognitive strategy of evaluating oneu0027s performance proved to be a positive predictor of the studentsu0027 performance in listening and reading comprehension and the overall written test. Based on the results, some implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:The research aimed to assess the associations among the implementation of meta-cognitive strategies, the support of automated writing evaluation feedback system and the English writing performance of Chinese EFL college students. The findings of the research indicated that incorporating meta-cognitive strategies during the writing process and utilizing automated writing evaluation feedback significantly contributed to the enhancement of English writing skills among students. A majority of the respondents reported actively employing various meta-cognitive strategies while writing and receiving substantial knowledge, intellectual, and emotional support through automatic writing evaluation feedback, resulting in noticeable improvements in their writing abilities. This study offers English administrators and teachers’ valuable insights that can help foster English language proficiency among Chinese EFL college students. Furthermore, the study recommended that future research should explore additional challenges and concerns related to English writing for EFL college students, providing opportunities for academics to delve deeper into this area.

Abstract:Teachers' attitudes, behavior, and practices play an integral role in enhancing the students' learning activities. Teachers' strategies ensure the individuals' professional development by creating a healthy learning environment. The study's primary objective is to analyze students' attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language. The data was collected from the 359 colleges and universities students by adopting a convenient sampling technique. The study shows English self-concept and teacher behavior student orientation significantly positively impact attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language. Motivation for English and English Intentions mediate the relationship between English Self-concept, teacher behavior-student orientation, and Attitude toward learning English as a Foreign Language. The study motivates future studies to focus on the EFL, individuals' learning motivation and intentions in other domains across diverse contexts.

Abstract:This article reports a nationwide investigation on the attitude of college English teachers towards research.Questionnaires and interviews were employed to collect data from 747 teachers regarding their research achievements,understanding of relationship between teaching and research,analysis of factors standing in the way of professional development,academic participation,and self planning.The results show that the teachers generally believe it is unfair for the teachers different disciplines to have unified requirements because of the diversity nature different disciplines.They think that teaching and research are complementary but also contradictory to some extent.The authors analyzed the teachers' views using the framework of Higher Education Models,and proposed a strategy of cooperation among teachers,Teacher Development Department,and Scientific Research Development Department.It is an investigation that surveyed a large sample after a new round of educational reform,the results of which will have some implications for decision makers in China.
Questionnaire and Digital Portfolios: the Current Situation of the Autonomous English Learning among Non-English Major Freshmen: ——Exemplified by a local normal university in the mainland China

Abstract:The previous papers took their research sample from the top universities, but this paper took the study sample from a local normal university in which there are 296 non-English major freshmen lack of good English-learning basis. By dint of the SPSS 25.0 analysis of the questionnaire based on the 5-point Likert scale and the digital portfolios produced by MosoTeach online teaching platform, the present study has explored the current situation of the autonomous English learning among the sample of 296 students. The findings revealed that these college freshmen exhibited the medium level of autonomous English learning (AEL) with the mean score 3.1034, which cannot be regarded as good AEL ability or bad one. As for the gender difference, there was a significant disparity between the male students’ AEL and the female students’. The mean in AEL of the female (3.1902) was superior to that of the male (2.9383). The correlation between Section 1 (self-management ability and psychology of autonomous English learning) and Section 2 (autonomous learning behaviour) in the AELS was significantly high in a positive direction with the correlation coefficient R being 0.747 and the regression model between them was established as, Y=-0.41+0.89X. However, there existed a big gap between their ability and psychology of AEL and their AEL behaviour. Meanwhile, the moderate level of AEL for these students was also testified by the digital portfolios in the MosoTeach platform. Finally, towards the situation of these students’ AEL, the countermeasure and suggestions were put forward subsequently. It is anticipated that the paper can provide implications for future studies on promoting learner autonomy in college English teaching.

Abstract:Abstract The orderly development of educational reform in colleges and universities has provided sustained impetus for the integration of excellent traditional culture and education. English education, as a crucial component of modern education, has also become a focal point for cultural integration. This study focuses on integrating excellent traditional Chinese culture into English teaching in colleges and universities as the research object, constructs a knowledge map using Citespace, and establishes a knowledge ontology model based on data analysis. Afterward, we established the overall structure and process of central computing tools and analyzed the keywords of excellent traditional Chinese culture for their application in English teaching. Upon analyzing the research on the integration of excellent traditional Chinese culture into English teaching in colleges and universities, we found that, as of the statistical cut-off date of 2020, 733 articles had been published in related research, with master and doctoral theses and core journals publishing the highest number of articles annually, at 89 and 15 respectively. We can divide the annual publication volume of related literature into three historical stages: the rapid development stage, the decline stage, and the steady development stage. The analysis of research hotspots and frontiers reveals that countermeasures (0.75), cultural integration (0.44), and innovative education (0.36) rank as the top three keywords in terms of centrality. The experiment concluded that the hot spots and frontiers of research on the integration of excellent traditional Chinese culture into English teaching in colleges and universities primarily focus on innovation and reform, as well as cultural integration. These areas will continue to influence relevant research in the field of English teaching for some time to come.
