Abstract:The toxic effects of fluoranthene on two marine diatoms were investigated using the static method. The results showed that the 72h EC50 values of fluoranthene to Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum were (18±2.9)μg/L and (103±9.1)μg/L,respectively. There were no significant effects to the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of S. costatum cells treated with fluoranthene at different concentrations or exposed time, and also did to the SOD activity of P. tricornutum cells treated with fluoranthene at different concentrations. The SOD activity of P. tricornutum cells increased suddenly at the 36th hour and then recovered to the original level. In contrast, for the two marine diatoms, there were significant effects on the malondialdehyde (MDA) content of algal cells treated with fluoranthene at different concentrations or exposed time, indicating that the lipid peroxidation of algal cells increased significantly by fluoranthene stress, which might have adverse effects on the function of algal cell membrane.
