Abstract:The transformation of China's small-scale peasant economy represented by household economies in the regions south of the Yangtze River towards agricultural involutions in the mid of 19th century is the one of the symbolic features of China's entry into the modern era. Since the 1850s, the tribute trade system was more and more dominated by the imperial financial international trade system of the West and thus marked another feature in China's economic history. The Taiping rebellion is the direct response to the former change while the second Opium War accelerated the progress of the latter. Therefore, these two events can be regarded as the beginning of China's modern history. Meanwhile, the meaning of the modern times should also be examined from the even greater historical laws of periodical laws of the rise and fall of China's dynasties.
