Abstract:This chapter presents an overview of organic waste resources, their potential for biogas production, and the development of biogas technology in China. Agricultural and rural waste residues, municipal organic waste, and agro-industrial organic wastewater are the primary substrates for biogas production. It is estimated that by 2030, the resources from the listed organic waste streams will amount to 5.35, 0.51, and 8.4 billion tons, respectively. Biogas production potential is approximated at 169 billion m 3 . China's biogas plants have rapidly developed in the last 10 years. In the period between 2008 and 2017, a rapid increase in biogas plants and the number of constructed plants amounted to 109,976. In coping with climate change, a proposal to attain the peak of minimizing carbon emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060 provides new opportunities for developing China's biogas industry. Due to the condition of waste treatment, Chinese companies have developed some unique biogas technologies. The high solid and high ammonia nitrogen chicken manure biogas plant's success was a good illustration. The extensive application of anaerobic digestion for treating food waste has been successfully implemented for high lipids, salts, and loading rates during treatment. However, biogas technology is still faced with numerous challenges, such as substrate pretreatment, process monitoring, digestate treatment, and utilization. The sustainability and stability of the biogas industry depend on technological innovation, policy support, and a good business model.
