Abstract:Triphenylmethane dyes are widely used in textile dyeing,medicine,biological staining,paper,leather,food and cosmetic industries. Their special stable chemical structures make them difficult to be degradated and decolorized. The biodecolorization research of triphenylmethane dyes will provide the fundamental knowledge for the treatment of dye-containing wastewater and bioremediation of dye-contaminated environment. In this paper,the recent research progress in biodegradation and decolorization of triphenylmethane dyes by microorganisms,such as bacteria,actinomycetes,fungi and alga,as well as the functioning enzymes and their coding genes,were reviewed. The decolorization mechanisms and degradation pathways of triphenylmethane dyes were discussed based on the decolorizing intermediate products of different microbes. The development and application of triphenylmethane dyes biodecolorization and biodegradationwere also prospected.
The Investigation of the Treatment of Dyeing Wastewater by Galvanic Corrosion-Reduction Degradation-Coagulation Absorption

Abstract:A new method for treating dyeing waste water with iron filings, flue gas or gas ashes as treating agent is introduced. The treatment mechanism is discussed and the proper treating conditions and technological procedures are suggested. The experimental results show that when the ratio of treating agent is 4:6, pH values of iron filings filtering and coagulation absorption are controlled at 4～5 and 8～9 respectively, treating time is 20～30min, the rate of dislodgement and decolouring after treating can reach over 90%; all the values of COD are less than 100mg/L; the waste water becomes clear and transparent; and all the quality indexes of water conform with the national dischange standards.

Abstract:Textile wastewater is intractable industrial wastewater because of its big quantity and high concentration of complicated constituents. The research object was the wastewater from each unit of a sewage treatment plant in Zhejiang province, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to determine the degradation process of organic pollutants in treatment processes. The results show that wastewater samples from the primary settling tank, the secondary sedimentation tank and the final settling tank respectively contained 50, 40 and 30 kinds of organic matters, including chloroform, 1, 2-dichloroethane, 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane and other eight kinds of organic matters which belong to environmental priority control contaminants.Acetophenone, chloroform, 2-chloro-2-methyl butane and other five kinds of organic matters are chosen as the characteristic pollutants in textile wastewater. The research has important significance on the treatment and reuse of textile wastewater.
Dye adsorption properties of carbonized sludge and its application for treating dyeing wastewater

Abstract:The dye sorption characteristics of carbonized sludge and activated carbon were studied by using isothermal adsorption experiments.The results showed that the isothermal adsorption of methylene blue,acid red GR and basic violet at 25±2 ℃ could be well illustrated by Langmuir or Freundlich equation,as the coefficients ranged from 0.94 to 0.99(P<0.01).According to the Langmuir equation,the maximum adsorption of methylene blue,acid red GR and basic violet by carbonized sludge were 5.72,19.42 and 10.24 mg/g,respectively,and so were 22.47,36.36 and 11.30 mg/g by activated carbon in order.The former were up to 66.96% for methylene blue,53.41% for acid red GR,and 90.62% for basic violet of the later.The parameter N values from Freundlich equation were all >1,indicating that the adsorption behavior of dyes by carbonized sludge and activated carbon were preferential adsorption.It was also found that there was no significant difference between carbonized sludge and activated carbon on the decolonization of the practical dyeing wastewater,implying that carbonized sludge could be instead of activated carbon for dyeing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The naturally occurring agricultural waste based biosorbents have gained increasing attention for green production and environmental protection, due to their biodegradability, economic viability, and ecological benefits. In the present study, an agricultural waste of sunflower stem-pith (SSP) was used directly as a biosorbent to treat the textile cationic dyes, and the correlations of sorption properties, such as physicochemical structure, treating conditions, and adsorption properties were examined. The maximum sorption capacity of SSP for methylene blue (MB) was 346.32 mg/g, and the modeling of the adsorption data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. SSP sorption test showed that 97% of MB could be adsorbed after 30 min contact time at temperatures between 35 and 70 °C and over a broad pH range of 3.5–12, indicating that SSP possessed acid resistances, with rapid and temperature-insensitive adsorption process. Furthermore, the five cycles recovery test revealed the recyclability of SSP. Finally, the prevalence of SSP towards the adsorption of textile cationic dyes was verified by comparing MB with malachite green (MG), which further highlighted its practical applications. Overall, the natural SSP material with high regeneration efficiency could be promising and a suitable alternative adsorbent for treating dye wastewater contamination.

Application of chitosan-based materials in wastewater treatment

Abstract:Chitosan, as a natural polysaccharide material, plays a great role in the field of wastewater treatment due to its good biodegradability, antimicrobial activity, and other properties. However, it may have some differences in the processes of adsorption, flocculation, and membrane separation. We comprehensively describe the application effect and mechanism of action of chitosan-based materials on the above three major water treatment processes. In the adsorption process, chitosan-based adsorbents such as hydrogels and chitosan beads are prepared by cross-linking, impregnation, and the introduction of functional groups. These chitosan-based materials exerted efficient removal performance in the adsorption of heavy metals, organic dyes, anionic pollutants, etc., which was attributed to their large specific surface area and abundant functional groups. In the flocculation process, the chitosan-based materials were modified by grafting and modifying their shape, while heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and algae were removed using processes such as chelation and charge neutralization. In the membrane separation process, a number of nanofiltration and microfiltration membranes were created by coating chitosan ions, and physicochemical modification was done for the separation of heavy metal ions and emulsified oil droplets in water to improve the fouling resistance and retention rate of the membrane materials. This paper reviews the application of chitosan-based materials in wastewater treatment and proposes that in-depth studies on their toxicity and reusability should be conducted in the future, with a view to playing a role in areas such as the removal of malodorous water odors.

Abstract:Dyeing wastewater is one kind of industrial wastewater,high concentration of organics,high chromaticity and alkaline,complex constitution and difficultly bio-degraded.This paper introduces the forming and characteristics of dyeing wastewater,as well as the treatment methods,classified as hysicochemical, chemical and biochemical treatment.The recent advanced techniques are also discussed,such as membrane separation,ultrasonic process,high-energy physical process,advanced oxidation process,electrochemical process,photocatalysis degradation and efficient bacterium process.The effective combination of different treatment methods is put forward and to develop efficient,economical and energy saving dyeing wastewater treatment reactor will be the development orientation of dyeing wastewater treatment research.

Abstract:The dyeing wastewaters are composed of complex chemical compositions, which are toxic and cause biotic risks. For eco-friendly remediation of such toxicants, agro-based materials are used as biosorbent/adsorbent and co-substrate in both physiochemical and biological treatment processes. The present study comprehensively reviews the efficacy of agro-biomass/byproducts (belonging to plants, microbes and animals) either as biosorbents (raw biomass) or adsorbents (modified biomass) for direct removal of dyes and their role as co-substrate to stimulate the biodegradation/decolourization of dyes by bacteria and fungi. In physiochemical process, agro-based biosorbents/adsorbents with porous structures and cellulosic content (≥40%) could exhibit excellent potential for removal of both ionic and non-ionic dyes from aqueous medium. Advancement of chemically modified agro-wastes in the form of bio-composites, or doped with nano-materials are used to enhance the sorption of dyes from wastewater in column-flow mode. In biological processes, co-substrate such as jack-fruit-seed-powder, sago-waste, and molasses can act as ē-donor, nutritional supplement, and solid-phase substratum for bacteria in dye decolourization medium, which reduces the colour and organic loading in bio-treated water. Such low-cost agro-based co-substrates could be used in bioreactors for biodegradation of dyes and coupled bio-energy production at industrial scale. However, it is required to investigate the potential of biosorbent for real-dyeing-wastewater treatment, comprehensive economic analysis of the agro-based bio-treatment process, a suitable solid-phase co-substrate for immobilization of microorganism to reduce sludge, and reusability of agro-wastes for effective treatment of wastewater.

Abstract:The application situations of coagulation process in pretreatment and advanced treatment of dyeing wastewater and pretreatment for dyeing wastewater reuse are generalized. The application and development of inorganic coagulants,organic flocculants and composite coagulants used in dyeing wastewater treatment are introduced. The coagulation capability of composite coagulant is improved with synergistic effect of each component,therefore the reagent dosage is reduced and the production of coagulation sludge is decreased. It is proposed that:The organic components of composite coagulant should be treated by cationization to reduce the dosage of inorganic component, and the branched organic polymer with absorption function groups should be prepared by grafting reaction to improve the coagulation effect;For further research,the effects of other pollutants in real dyeing wastewater and the practical operation conditions on coagulation should be studied for modification of composite coagulant.

Abstract:Acting as a key element for the survival of human and nature, clean water also contributes tremendously to the ever-growing industries in a country. However, the supply of clean water had led to a decrease as pollutants such as dyes had caused a major negative impact on pure and clean main water bodies. In recent years, textile industries have developed and contributed to more than 50% of dye wastewaters in the world. The improper method of discharging dye effluent to the aquatic environment caused the destruction of habitat and degradation of water quality. Advanced treatments such as photocatalysis, electrooxidation, the Fenton process, and biological treatment via bacterium are often used for dye wastewaters. However, these treatment processes are often expensive in operation and maintenance. In conjunction, adsorption is one of the efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly treatment methods. The adsorbent most widely used is the activated carbon adsorbent. Activated carbon comes in two forms, granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon (PAC). There are two methods to activation of carbon that are physical activation and chemical activation. The factors affecting the efficiency of adsorption are the adsorbent dosage, dye concentration, pH value, and temperature. In this article, the efficiency of dye wastewater treatment via adsorption is discussed. Several waste materials are being studied especially agricultural biomass as it has little or no economic value and often poses disposal issues. Some low-cost agricultural biomass-based adsorbents such as tea waste, hazelnut husk, bacteria aggregate, rice ash, pineapple leaf, and fruit waste have been tested to be effective in the dye removal process. There are mainly four categories of agricultural biomass-derived adsorbent, such as leaf-based, peel-based, stem-based, and seed-based adsorbents.

Abstract:Lignin-based polymers have great potential for water treatment due to their environmental friendliness, biodegradability, and safety. Herein, lignin-betaine polymer (LB) was synthesized by Steglich esterification. The formation of ester groups between lignin and betaine was corroborated by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The LB was applied in the treatment of the methylene blue -containing wastewater, and demonstrated a dye removal rate of 98 %. Our study indicated that the dye removal was dominated by chemical adsorption. Moreover, the LB exhibited durable dye removal performance and maintained excellent reusability after four cycles. Collectively, the lignin-betaine polymer could provide an effective candidate for wastewater treatment, with specific potency for the removal of cationic dye.

Abstract:Abstract Synthetic dyes or colorants are key chemicals for various industries producing textiles, food, cosmetics, pharmaceutics, printer inks, leather, and plastics. Nowadays, the textile industry is the major consumer of dyes. The mass of synthetic colorants used by this industry is estimated at the level of 1 ÷ 3 × 105 tons, in comparison with the total annual consumption of around 7 × 105 tons worldwide. Synthetic dyes are relatively easy to detect but difficult to eliminate from wastewater and surface water ecosystems because of their aromatic chemical structure. It should be highlighted that the relatively high stability of synthetic dyes leads to health and ecological concerns due to their toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic nature. Currently, removal of such chemicals from wastewater involves various techniques, including flocculation/coagulation, precipitation, photocatalytic degradation, biological oxidation, ion exchange, adsorption, and membrane filtration. In this review, a number of classical and modern technologies for synthetic dye removal from industry-originated wastewater were summarized and discussed. There is an increasing interest in the application of waste organic materials (e.g., compounds extracted from orange bagasse, fungus biosorbent, or green algal biomasses) as effective, low-cost, and ecologically friendly sorbents. Moreover, a number of dye removal processes are based on newly discovered carbon nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes and graphene as well as their derivatives).

Abstract:The treatment of organic wastewater is of great significance. Carbon nanotube (CNT)/graphene-based nanomaterials have great potential as absorbent materials for organic wastewater treatment owing to their high specific surface area, mesoporous structure, tunable surface properties, and high chemical stability; these attributes allow them to endure harsh wastewater conditions, such as acidic, basic, and salty conditions at high concentrations or at high temperatures. Although a substantial amount of work has been reported on the performance of CNT/graphene-based nanomaterials in organic wastewater systems, engineering challenges still exist for their practical application. Herein, the adsorption mechanism of CNT- and graphene-based nanomaterials is summarized, including the adsorption mechanism of CNTs and graphene at the atomic and molecular levels, their hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface properties, and the structure-property relationship required for adsorption to occur. Second, the structural modification and recombination methods of CNT- and graphene-based adsorbents for various organic wastewater systems are introduced. Third, the engineering challenges, including the molding of macroscopically stable adsorbents, adsorption isotherm models and adsorption kinetic behaviors, and reversible adsorption performance compared to that of activated carbon (AC) are discussed. Finally, cost issues are discussed in light of scalable and practical application of these materials.

Abstract:Organic dyes are one of the most commonly discharged pollutants in wastewaters; however, many conventional treatment methods cannot treat them effectively. Over the past few decades, we have witnessed rapid development of nanotechnologies, which offered new opportunities for developing innovative methods to treat dye-contaminated wastewater with low price and high efficiency. The large surface area, modified surface properties, unique electron conduction properties, etc. offer nanomaterials with excellent performances in dye-contaminated wastewater treatment. For examples, the agar-modified monometallic/bimetallic nanoparticles have the maximum methylene blue adsorption capacity of 875.0 mg/g, which are several times higher than conventional adsorbents. Among various nanomaterials, the carbonaceous nanomaterials, nano-sized TiO2, and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) are considered as the most promising nanomaterials for removing dyes from water phase. However, some challenges, such as high cost and poor separation performance, still limit their engineering application. This article reviewed the recent advances in the nanomaterials used for dye removal via adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and biological treatment. The modification methods for improving the effectiveness of nanomaterials are highlighted. Finally, the current knowledge gaps of developing nanomaterials on the environmental application were discussed, and the possible further research direction is proposed.
Novel Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide Modified Mixed Adsorbent for Efficient Treatment of Dyeing and Printing Wastewater

Abstract:The treatment of dyeing and printing wastewater is a formidable challenge due to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and chromaticity, which pose severe threats to both the environment and human health. In this study, a composite modified adsorption material was prepared based on the applicability and feasibility in practical engineering applications. A novel mixed modified adsorbent was developed by incorporating activated carbon and activated clay as the foundation materials, followed by the addition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) for modification. The performance of the composite adsorbent was evaluated via adsorption experiments of bromophenol blue (BPB) solution and dyeing and printing wastewater. The results demonstrated that the mixed modified adsorbent achieved a remarkable removal rate of 99% for BPB and 99.3% for chromaticity, under the optimal adsorption conditions. Furthermore, the regeneration performance of the mixed modified adsorbent was found to be exceptional. The adsorption process of BPB by the composite adsorbent was governed by the quasi-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, as evidenced by adsorption kinetics and isotherm analyses. The straightforward preparation method, coupled with the superior adsorption performance, underlines the promising potential of the proposed composite adsorbent for practical applications. Abstract:To effectively solve the problem of wastewater pollution, in this paper, corn starch, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CTA), vinyl acetate (VAC), and methylacryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC) were used as raw material, etherifying agent, esterifying agent, and grafting monomer, respectively. A starch (St)-based natural polymer cationic flocculant (DMSt-g-DMC) was prepared via etherification, esterification, and grafting copolymerization triple modification. This study is of great significance for the removal of dyes from wastewater. There are two keys to success. First, DMSt-g-DMC not only enhances flocculation but also improves water solubility through triple modification. Second is grafting reaction, in which the number of positive charges in the main chain of the DMSt-g-DMC macromolecule is further increased and its molecular structure adjusted to give full play to its electrical neutralization, bridging, and net trapping effects on anionic dyes in the water, so as to achieve the purpose of improving the flocculation effect. The removal rates of DMSt-g-DMC were 94.1% for Acid Light Yellow G, 83.7% for Reactive Brilliant Blue X-BR, and 97.1% for Direct Lake Blue 5B. DMSt-g-DMC not only has a wide flocculation window but also maintains good flocculation performance in a wide pH range, which is conducive to the treatment of wastewater with high alkalinity and complex composition. Finally, the removal rate of dye was tested when DMSt-g-DMC and PAC were flocculated together; the dosages of DMSt-g-DMC and PAC were 70 and 100 mg/L, respectively. The removal rates of Disperse Red GS, Disperse Yellow 2G-FL, and Direct Lake Blue 5B reached 87.5, 89.8, and 95.6%, respectively. In addition, DMSt-g-DMC and PAC remained stable after a long flocculation time, which may bring far-reaching changes if applied in industrial wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, there has been an interest in the study of new methods for the removal of dyes from water due to its large-scale use in different industries, for example, for paper printing, textile, leather, pharmaceutical, food or technological applications. It is estimated that more than 700 thousand tons of about 10 000 different types of dyes are produced annually. Most of them are synthetic origin and can generate adverse effects, for example, teratogenic, mutagenic and carcinogenic action. Dyes are mainly applied in the textile industry, and they are usually classified into anionic (acid dyes), cationic (basic dyes) and non-ionic (disperse dyes) dyes. The direct discharge of dyes into the environment can cause various damages to plants and animals: dyes can block the penetration of sunlight, reduce the photosynthetic efficiency of aquatic plants and ultimately destroy the ecological balance of the aquatic ecosystem. This study determined the adsorption efficiency of congo red, methylene blue, rhodamine B and naphthol green B dyes used in textile industry by using the aerogel – an adsorbent synthesized from paper waste. Total carbon was selected as indicator of dye concentration in solution. An increase in fibre content from 3 % to 5 % contributes to the improvement of adsorption properties. The decrease in congo red concentration after an adsorption process was 31.0 % and 38.0 % respectively; the decrease in methylene blue was 2.49 % and 8.15 %; the decrease in naphthol green B was 28.04 % and 34.14 % and the decrease in rhodamine B was 1.28 % and 4.13 %.

Abstract:Globally, developing countries require access to safe drinking water to support human health and facilitate long-term sustainable development, in which waste management and control are critical tasks. As the most plentiful, renewable biopolymer on earth, cellulose has significant utility in the delivery of potable water for human consumption. Herein, recent developments in the application of nanoscale cellulose and cellulose derivatives for water treatment are reviewed, with reference to the properties and structure of the material. The potential application of nanocellulose as a primary component for water treatment is linked to its high aspect ratio, high surface area, and the high number of hydroxyl groups available for molecular interaction with heavy metals, dyes, oil-water separation, and other chemical impurities. The ability of superhydrophobic nanocellulose-based textiles as functional fabrics is particularly acknowledged as designed structures for advanced water treatment systems. This review covers the adsorption of heavy metals and chemical impurities like dyes, oil-water separation, as well as nanocellulose and nanostructured derivative membranes, and superhydrophobic coatings, suitable for adsorbing chemical and biological pollutants, including microorganisms.

Abstract:The treatment of dye wastewater poses a significant challenge to the sewage recycling industries. However, the reduction of secondary pollution resulting from the membrane residues, to maintain high performance, remains a considerable obstacle. A novel approach for the fabrication of multilayer nanofiber structures using a layer-by-layer electrostatic spinning technique with biological materials was reported in this study. Incorporating the chemical adsorption advantages of lignin nanofiber and the physical adsorption advantages of silk fibroin (SF) nanofiber enabled the full realization of excellent dye interception performance. A comparative analysis was conducted on the lignin derived from eucalyptus, pine, and straw to determine the most suitable option. Notably, eucalyptus lignin exhibited superior antimicrobial properties. The adsorption of crystal violet by eucalyptus lignin/SF membrane was consistent with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, revealing a chemisorption mechanism involving Π-Π conjugation, hydrogen bonding, and the binding of anions and cations. The lignin/SF membrane exhibited a retention rate exceeding 99.5 % for crystal violet, methylene blue, and brilliant green dyes. Furthermore, it demonstrated efficacy in retaining heavy metal ions, including cadmium and copper. The original biomass material imparts the property of rapid degradation to a multilayer membrane that can be used as an effective and eco-friendly water purification material.
