Abstract:A new binuclear copper(II) complex [Cu-2(oxpn)(IM(2)py)(2)](ClO4)(2), containing four spin carriers with pyridyl-substituted nitroxide radicals has been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically (oxpn=N,N '-bis(3-aminopropyl)oxamido, IM2py=2-(2 '-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidizoline-1-oxyl). The structure of the complex consists of centrosymmetric trans oxamido-bridged copper(II) binuclear units and nitroxide radicals. The coordination geometry around each copper atom is distorted square pyramidal and the apical position is occupied by a nitrogen atom of the imidazoline ring of a radical ligand. Magnetic analysis indicates that the complex exhibits strong anti ferro magnetic coupling between copper(II) ions through the oxamido bridge and a ferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions and radical ligands. The magnetic behaviour is discussed with reference to the crystal structure.

Abstract:Two new binuclear copper(II) complexes containing four spin carriers with pyridyl-substituted nitroxide radicals have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. These complexes are formulated as [Cu-2(oxap)(IM4py)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [Cu-2(oxap)(NIT4PY)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2), respectively, in which oxap stands for N,N'-bis(2-aminopropyl). IM4py stands for 2-(4'-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl and NIT4py for 2-(4'-pyridyl)-4,4,5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide. The structures of the complexes consist of centrosymmetric trans oxamido-bridged copper(II) binuclear units and nitroxide radicals. In 1 and 2 the copper atoms are in a distorted square plane and radicals (IM4py and NIT4py) coordinate to copper via nitrogen atoms from pyridine rings. Magnetic analysis indicates that 1 and 2 exhibit strong metal-metal anti ferromagnetic coupling through oxamido-bridged and anti ferromagnetic exchange interactions between copper(II) ion and radicals, respectively. The magnetic behaviors are discussed with reference to their crystal structures.

Abstract:Two novel 1-D chain copper(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The two complexes crystallize in neutral 1-D chains, where Cu(II)–nitroxide cationic units are linked by iminodiacetate anion ligands. The radical-dependent magnetic properties are discussed.

Abstract:In our efforts to investigate the coordination architectures of transition metals and organic ligands with tailored structures, we have prepared two structurally related rigid bulky acridine-based ligands, 9-[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]- acridine (L(1)) and 9-(1-imidazolyl)acridine (L2), and synthesized and characterized four of their Ag(I) complexes, {[AgL1](ClO4)}2 (1), {[AgL1](NO3)}2 (2), [AgL2(2)](ClO4) (3), and {[(Ag3L2(3))(NO3)](NO3)2(H2O)}(infinity) (4). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the structures of 1 and 2 are similar to each other, with the two intramolecular Ag(I) centers of each complex being encircled by two L1 ligands; this forms a unique boxlike cyclic dimer, which is further linked to form one-dimensional (1D) chains of 1 and a two-dimensional (2D) network of 2 by intermolecular face-to-face pi...pi stacking and/or weak C-H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions, respectively. 3 has a mononuclear structure, which is further assembled into a 2D network via intermolecular Ag...O and pi...pi stacking weak interactions. 4 possesses two different 1D motifs that are further interlinked through interlayer face-to-face pi...pi stacking and Ag...O weak interactions, resulting in a 2D network. It is worth noting that one of the interesting structural features of 1, 2, and 4 is the presence of obvious C-H...M hydrogen-bonding interactions between the Ag centers and some acridine ring H atoms identified by X-ray diffraction on the basis of the van der Waals radii. Furthermore, as a representative example, full geometry optimization on the basis of the experimental structure, the natural bond orbital (NBO), and topological analysis of 1 were carried out by DFT and AIM (Atoms in Molecules) calculations. The total C-H...Ag interaction energy in 1 is estimated to be about 14 kJ/mol. Therefore, this work offers three new rare examples (1, 2, and 4) that exhibit C-H...Ag weak interactions, in which the N donors of the acridine rings coordinate to Ag(I) ions. Also, these results strongly support the existence of C-H...Ag close interactions and allow us to have a better understanding of the nature of such interactions in the coordination supramolecular systems.

Abstract:Three new complexes of the formula M2L2 derived from 2-(4-quinolyl)nitronyl nitroxide (4-QNNN) and M(hfac)(2) [M- = Mn(II), Co(II), and Cu(II)], (4-QNNN)(2).[Mn(hfac)(2)](2) (1), (4-QNNN)2-[Co(hfaC)(2)](2).2H(2)O (2), and (4-QNNN)(2).Cu-(hfac)(2).Cu'(hfac)(2) (3), were synthesized and characterized structurally as well as magnetically. Complexes 1 and 2 are four-spin complexes with quadrangle geometry, in which both the nitrogen atoms of quinoline rings and oxygen atoms of nitronyl nitroxides are involved in the formation of coordination bonds. For complex 3, however, the nitrogen atoms of quinoline rings are coordinated with Cu(II) ion to afford a three-spin complex, which is further linked to another molecule of Cu(hfac)(2) (referred to as Cu'(hfaC)(2)) to form a 1D alternating chain. The magnetic behaviors of the three complexes were investigated. For complex 1, as the nitronyl nitroxides and Mn(II) ions are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled, consequently its temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility was fitted to the model of spin-dimer with S = 2, yielding the intradimer magnetic exchange constant of J = -0.82 cm(-1). For complex 2, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in the T > 50 K region was simulated with the model of two-spin unit with S-1 = 3/2 and S-2 = 1/2, leading to J = -321.9 cm(-1) for the magnetic interaction due to Co(II)...O coordination bonding, D = -16.3 cm-1 (the zero-field splitting parameter), g = 2.26, and zJ = -3.8 cm(-1) for the magnetic interactions between Co(II) ions and nitronyl nitroxides through quinoline rings and those between nitronyl nitroxides due to the short O...O short contacts. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility of 3 was approximately fitted to a model described previously affording J(1) = -6.52 cm(-1) and J(2) = 3.64 cm(-1) for the magnetic interaction between nitronyl nitroxides and Cu(II) ions through the quinoline unit via spin polarization mechanism and the weak O...Cu coordination bonding, respectively.

Abstract:Four new metal complexes derived from a functional nitronyl nitroxide ligand, 2-(6-bromo-3-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (NIT-6Br-3Py) and M(hfac) 2+ (M 2+ = Cu 2+ , Co 2+ ; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate), [(Cu(hfac) 2 ) 3 (NIT-6Br-3Py) 2 ] ( 1 ), [Cu(hfac) 2 NIT-6Br-3Py] n ( 2 ), [Co(hfac) 2 (H 2 O)NIT-6Br-3Py] ( 3 ) and [(Co(hfac) 2 ) 2 (NIT-6Br-3Py) 2 ] ( 4 ) have been synthesized and characterized. In complex 1 , the NIT-6Br-3Py ligand acts as bridging ligand to link three Cu(II) ions leading to {Cu 3 } complex while complex 2 displays a 1D-chain structure. Complex 3 possesses mono-nuclear structure and 4 is a four-spin complex with a dimeric structure, where the NIT-6Br-3Py ligand links Co ions via the oxygen atom of NO group and the nitrogen atom from pyridine ring. Magnetic studies show that the antiferromagnetic interactions are dominated in complexes 1 , 3 and 4 , while there exist strong ferromagnetic interactions between Cu II and coordinated nitronyl nitroxide radical ligand in complex 2 .

Abstract:A two-dimensional Zn(II)-nitronyl nitroxide radical complex, Zn(NIT4Py)(2)[Au(CN)(2)](2) ( NIT4Py = 2-(40-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The complex is monoclinic, space group C2/c, with a = 26.294(9), b = 7.167(2), c = 18.532(6) angstrom, beta = 111.758(5)degrees, V = 3243.6(18) angstrom(3), Z = 4, and R-1 [I > 2 sigma (I)] = 0.0348, and has an infinite two-dimensional network motif. Magnetic studies showed ferromagnetic coupling between two radicals through Zn( II).

Abstract:Three Cu(II) complexes of tetranuclear [Cu-4(cmpy)(4)(N-3)(5)Cl-3] (1), 1D chain [Cu-2(cea)(2)(N-3)(4)](n) (2), and two-dimensional layer [Cu-5(cmpy)(2)(N-3)(10)](n) (3) were synthesized by controlling the molar ratio of Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, pyCH(2)Cl center dot HCl (cmpy center dot HCl), or H2NCH2CH2Cl center dot HCl (cea center dot HCl) and sodium azide. For complexes 1-3, the atom Cl of the ligands (cmpy and cea) is located at the Jahn-Teller axis of Cu(II) with the weak Cu-Cl separations of 2.920(1) - 3.177(1) angstrom that are shorter than the sum of van der Waals radii of Cu and Cl atoms, 3.3 angstrom. The azide ligands coordinate to Cu(II) in the equatorial or basal plane of the coordination pyramid, favoring strong magnetic coupling. The bridging angles of Cu-N-azido-Cu in complexes 1-3 are nearly 101 degrees, corresponding to the presence of global ferromagnetic coupling. The end-to-end azide bridges appear exclusively in complex 3, linking the end-on azide-bridged ID chains into a 2D layer.

Abstract:Two new nitronyl nitroxides with amido units L-1 and L-2 were synthesized and characterized. Reactions of L-1 and L-2 with M(hfac)(2) [hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetonate, M=Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II)] afforded five hetero-spin complexes L1Co(hfac)(2), L1Ni(hfac)(2), L2CO(hfac)(2), L2Ni(hfac)(2) and L2Mn(hfac)(2). The crystal structures and magnetic characterizations of L-1, L-2 and their metal complexes LM(hfac)(2) were described and discussed. Crystal structural analysis shows that both the carbonyl oxygen and the nitroxide oxygen are coordinated to the metal ions. Strong antiferromagetic coupling between the nitronyl nitroxides and metal ions were observed for all the five LM(hfac)(2) complexes.
Nitro group and K+ based secondary building unit for the self-assembly of 3D coordination polymers built on dinuclear dianionic helicate connectors

Abstract:Two 3D coordination polymers based on dinuclear dianionic helicates, K 2 [Mn II 2 (L) 3 ]·M = Mn II ( 1 ) and Ni II ( 2 ), were obtained by slow liquid-liquid difussion of solutions of 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde, 4,4′-methylenedianiline, KOtBu and the metal salt at room temperature. The resulting dianionic triply stranded helicates self-assemble into novel 3D coordination polymers, in which the helicate units act as connectors. The assembly is promoted by the phenolate bridging ability and the coordination of the pre-organized NO 2 groups to K-(O-N-O)4-K nodes, resulting in robust paramagnetic materials. SC-XRD shows that the metal centers are located at 11.257(2) and 11.264(1) Å apart, respectively. The Mn-L bond lengths correspond to the high-spin (HS, S = 5/2) state for 1 . The magnetic behavior for both complexes show weak magnetic exchange, as expected due to the spin carrier separation, and the confirmation of the HS-sate for the Mn II centers. For complex 1 an antiferromagnetic exchange is detected, wheras for complex 2 a mixture of intramolecular antiferromagnetic and a intermolecular ferromagnetic exchanges are detected. Thus, we showed that nitro groups can be used for the stabilization of anionic complexes, since coordination to K+ results in stable intricate architechtures.

Interplay of a Nitro-group and Metal Ions: from Coordinative Binding to Noncovalent Semicoordination

Abstract:The characteristic feature of the solid-state structures of the iodonium Group 10 tetracyanidometallates [Ar1Ar2I]2[Ni(CN)4]·CH2Cl2 (Ar1/Ar2 = 2,4,6-(MeO)3C6H2/4-NO2-C6H4; 1·CH2Cl2), [Ar1R2I]2[Pd(CN)4]·MeNO2 (2·MeNO2), and [Ar1Ar2I]2[Pt(CN)4]·MeNO2 (3·MeNO2) is the presence of M···ONO2 semicoordination occurred between any one of the metal sites and the nitroaryl-group. Although there should be a continuum between covalent and noncovalent interactions, both in geometry and bonding description, we succeeded to identify interatomic distances and the corresponding intervals, which are responsible for covalent (2.0–2.3 Å) and noncovalent (>2.5 Å) bindings of various nitro-groups. The geometric parameters of the three structures are in good agreement with the latter range. The noncovalent interactions, including the M···ONO2 interactions and I+···NC–M(CN)3 halogen bonds (HaB), were explored using DFT calculations. Several computational techniques, such as molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces, QTAIM/NCIplot topological analysis, natural bond orbital (NBO), and energy decomposition analysis (EDA using the Kitaura–Morokuma method) were employed to comprehensively characterize these interactions. Theoretical insights revealed that both M···ONO2 and HaB interactions significantly affect the molecular structures. In-depth examinations using NBO and EDA methods highlighted the predominant influence of electrostatic effects and confirmed the LP(ONO2)→σ*(M–C) charge transfer. This study is the first that found a place of the NO2-group semicoordination in the palette of metal-involving interactions of a nitro-group.

The framework structures of complexes 1 and 2 are 3-D networks via the hydrogen bonds among 1-D chains. The notable characteristics of the two complexes are that the coordination polyhedron of Zn(II) adopts a rare distorted five-coordinate square pyramidal geometry in 1, and the Cd(II) complex exhibits an unusual distorted seven-coordinate pentagonal bipyramid in 2.

Abstract:Two new polynuclear complexes [Ni6(amox)6(mu6-O)(mu3-OH)2](Cl2).6H2O and [Cu3(amox)3(mu3-OH)(mu3-Cl)](ClO4).4H2O (amox- = anion of 4-amino-4-methyl-2-pentanone oxime) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The Ni(II) complex contains a novel Chinese-lantern-like Ni6 cage centered by an oxo ion. It contains the nearest octahedral Ni(II)...Ni(II) separation (<2.8 A) and exhibits strong antiferromagnetic properties. The Cu(II) complex has a cyclic trinuclear copper(II) core bridged by both mu3-OH(-) and mu3-Cl(-) ions. The magnetic susceptibilities of both antiferromagnetic complexes were fitted by using approximate models.
Close-packed nitronyl nitroxide radicals by Au-S self-assembly: strong ferromagnetic coupling

Abstract:The study of the magnetism of tightly arranged nitronyl nitroxide (NN) radicals via Au-S self-assembly is interesting. In this study, a series of radicals (S-NN, D-NN, BS-NN, BD-NN) along with two types of nanomaterials (S-NPs, D-NPs) were synthesized. NN was chosen for the magnetic units. Their structures have been successfully synthesized and analyzed. The spin magnetic properties were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement. The analysis revealed that the self-assembled NN formed via Au-S bonds exhibits high packing density. Furthermore, it was gratifying to observe that the AuNPs exhibit ferromagnetism after the surface modification by NN. This results in strong ferromagnetic exchange interactions of S-NPs and D-NPs : J S-NPs = +279.715 K and J D-NPs = +254.913 K, respectively.

Abstract:One new cyano- and oxamidato-bridged mixed valence CuI/CuII complex 1 [Cu2II(oxdipn)CuI(CN)3] (oxdipn is the dianion of N,N′-bis(dipropylenetriamine) oxamide) has been synthesized and structurally determined. Complex 1 consists of a one-dimensional zigzag chain –CuI(CN)–CN–CuII-(oxdipn)-CuII–NC–CuI– with CuII and CuI atoms linked together by oxdipn ligand and cyanide. Magnetic calculation on complex 1 showed that the oxamidato bridge transmits antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu(II) ions.

Abstract:A novel ID polymer [Cu-3(mu(3)-OH)(2)(mu(2)-H2O)(2)(H2O)(2)(Agly)(2)].(CIO4)(2) was synthesized through the self-assembly of Cu2+ and acetylglycine (Agly) in aqueous solution and characterized by X-ray structure analysis. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic P2(1)/c space group (a= 5.4762(1) angstrom, b = 15.6136(1) angstrom, c = 13.9036(5) angstrom, beta = 98.584(1)degrees, Z=2) and represents the first ID coordination polymer with tetranuclear rhombus-like [CU4O4] unit as building block. It should be noted that the rhombus are sharing two vertices and the structure can also be viewed as a zigzag chain based on [Cu-3] building blocks. Agly ligand adopts eta(2)-coordinated mode and is used to connect two copper ions. With the help of hydrogen bonds, the 1D chains are further linked into 'infinity' like channels in which counter-anions ClO4- are located. The magnetic susceptibility measurements (1.8-300 K) agree with a moderately strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the Cu centers with a J value of - 40(2) cm(-1). (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Assembly of Silver(I) Two- and Three-Dimensional Coordination Networks with Complementary Tridentate Heteroaryl Ethynide Ligands

Abstract:Three pairs of complementary nitrogen heteroaryl ligands [2,6-(C[triple bond]C)(2)-py and 2-C[triple bond]C-pym; 2,5-(C[triple bond]C)(2)-py and 2-C[triple bond]C-pyz; 3,5-(C[triple bond]C)(2)-py and 5-C[triple bond]C-pym (py = pyridine, pyz = pyrazine, pym = pyrimidine)], wherein a ring nitrogen atom in one is interchanged with a carbon atom bearing an ethynyl substituent in the other, have been used to generate seven silver(I) complexes (1-7), in which silver infinite chains and two-dimensional coordination networks bridged by heteroaryl ethynide ligands were obtained as pre-programmed. The relative positions and bonding preference between the ethynide group and ring nitrogen atom act as controlling factors to produce various structural building units for the formation of multidimensional coordination networks. The fusion of C[triple bond]C[symbol: see text]Ag(n) (n = 3, 4) building units yields multinuclear silver aggregates in 1-6 whose nuclearities range from seven to twelve. The crystal structure of 7 displays a honeycomb layer composed of Ag(4) baskets alternately linked by pyrimidinyl-5-ethynide ligands. In addition, complex 1 features an infinite chain composed of an alternate arrangement of twist-boat water hexamers and bridging silver atoms.

Abstract:Two new multi-component coordination compounds of Cu(II) and Zn(II) viz . [Cu(py) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ]ADS·2H 2 O ( 1 ) and [Zn(4-CNpy) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ]ADS·2H 2 O ( 2 ) (py = pyridine, 4-CNpy = 4-cyanopyridine, ADS = anthraquinone-1,5-disulfonate) have been synthesized in aqueous media at room temperature and characterized using elemental and spectroscopic analyses (FT-IR, electronic), TGA and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Both the compounds crystallize as metal–organic multi-component compounds containing complex cationic moieties along with uncoordinated anionic ADS moieties in the crystal structures. Crystal structure analysis of 1 reveals the stabilisation of the layered assembly of the compound assisted by CH⋯O, OH⋯O hydrogen bonding and π-stacking interactions. Antiparallel CN⋯CN and aromatic π-stacking interactions provide rigidity to the crystal structure of compound 2 . In addition, enclathration of lattice water molecules within the supramolecular cavity of 2 provides additional reinforcement to the crystal structure. We have carried out theoretical investigations to analyze π-stacking, H-bonding and antiparallel CN···CN non-covalent interactions observed in the compounds using DFT calculations, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and non-covalent interaction (NCI) plot index computational tools. The binding energies of the supramolecular assemblies are quite significant due to the ion-pair nature of the interactions which lack directionality; however, the aforementioned weaker non-covalent interactions play crucial roles in the final arrangement of molecules in the solid state due to their directional nature.

Abstract:Four Cu(II) complexes, the one-dimensional [Cu(HL1)(2)(CuCl4)](n) (1), {[Cu-2(L-1)(2)(N(CN) (2))(CH3OH)](ClO4)}(n) (2), dinuclear [Cu-2(L-2)(2)Cl-2] (3), and two-dimensional layered [Cu-2(L-2) (2)(N(CN)(2))(2)](n) (4) were synthesized by Cu(II) salts (CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O or Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O), alkanol bidentate ligands trans-2-(1-pyrazolyl) cyclohexanol (HL1) or 3,5-dimethyl-N-hydroxyethyl-pyrazolyl (HL2) together with sodium dicyanamide. For complex 1, the bridging chlorine atoms of the tetrahedral [CuCl4](2-) moieties are located at the Jahn-Teller axis of the elongated octahedral Cu(II), forming an alternate elongated-octahedral-tetrahedral Cu(II) chain complex. For complexes 2, 3 and 4, the alkyl oxygen atoms of the deprotonated ligands HL1 and HL2 bridge two Cu(II) ions, yielding a dinuclear Cu(II) unit [Cu-2(L-x)(2)](2+) (x = 1, 2), and one-or two-dimensional complexes via bridging dicyanamide ligands. Complex 1 shows weak ferromagnetic coupling, whilst complexes 2-4 display strong antiferromagnetic coupling or are even nearly diamagnetic due to the large Cu-O-Cu bond angles.

Abstract:The title compound, [Ag(NH3)(2)](C7H4NO4), is a mononuclear silver(I) complex with two cations and two anions in the asymmetric unit. The cations have almost linear coordination geometry with two ammine ligands and are linked into centrosymmetric pairs by weak Ag...Ag interactions. In the crystal structure, the cations and anions are linked together through N-H...O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional structure.
