Abstract:In this paper we present a local fitting algorithm for converting smooth planar curves to B-splines. For a smooth planar curve a set of points together with their tangent vectors are first sampled from the curve such that the connected polygon approximates the curve with high accuracy and inflexions are detected by the sampled data efficiently. Then, a G^1 continuous Bezier spline curve is obtained by fitting the sampled data with shape preservation as well as within a prescribed accuracy. Finally, the Bezier spline is merged into a C^2 continuous B-spline curve by subdivision and control points adjustment. The merging is guaranteed to be within another error bound and with no more inflexions than the Bezier spline. In addition to shape preserving and error control, this conversion algorithm also benefits that the knots are selected automatically and adaptively according to local shape and error bound. A few experimental results are included to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the algorithm.
Planar Point Set Fairing and Fitting by Arc Splines

Abstract:We fair and fit planar point sets by minimal-energy arc splines. The fairing process consists of two steps: computing the optimal tangents for curve interpolation and adjusting the point positions by smoothing the discrete curvatures. To fit the point set with minimal-energy arc curve, a simple linear algorithm is given for computing the optimal tangents. The discrete curvatures derived from the optimal tangents can be made smooth by low-pass filtering. These two linear and local algorithms are combined to generate a fair point set together with a fair G1 arc curve within a given tolerance of the original data. The method can be used for fair shape design and measured data processing. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of this method.
Curve Fitting and Fairing Using Conic Splines

Abstract:We present an efficient geometric algorithm for conic spline curve fitting and fairing through conic arc scaling. Given a set of planar points, we first construct a tangent continuous conic spline by interpolating the points with a quadratic Bézier spline curve or fitting the data with a smooth arc spline. The arc spline can be represented as a piecewise quadratic rational Bézier spline curve. For parts of the G1 conic spline without an inflection, we can obtain a curvature continuous conic spline by adjusting the tangent direction at the joint point and scaling the weights for every two adjacent rational Bézier curves. The unwanted curvature extrema within conic segments or at some joint points can be removed efficiently by scaling the weights of the conic segments or moving the joint points along the normal direction of the curve at the point. In the end, a fair conic spline curve is obtained that is G2 continuous at convex or concave parts and G1 continuous at inflection points. The main advantages of the method lies in two aspects, one advantage is that we can construct a curvature continuous conic spline by a local algorithm, the other one is that the curvature plot of the conic spline can be controlled efficiently. The method can be used in the field where fair shape is desired by interpolating or approximating a given point set. Numerical examples from simulated and real data are presented to show the efficiency of the new method.
B-spline Curve Fairing with Constraints

Abstract:In industry design and reverse engineering, the B-spline curve is an important tool for shape design and data fitting. The quality of final product shape is determined by the fairness of the B-spline curve directly. In this paper, a new method for fairing a B-spline curve is presented. The shape of a B-spline curve can be modified by adjusting its control points. The adjusting range of the control points is restricted by the β constraint, while the shape of the whole curve can be restricted by the α constraint. Finally, the fairing curve can be obtained by solving a linear system of equations. The method can be applied for global or local curve fairing. Examples of B-spline curve fairing from simulated and real data are presented to show the efficiency of the method.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Robust curve design on surface meshes with flexible controls is useful in a wide range of applications but remains challenging. Most existing methods fall into one of the two strategies: one is to discretize a curve into a polyline, which is then optimized, and the other is to directly design smooth splines on meshes. While the former approach usually needs a sufficiently dense sampling of curve points, which is computational costly, the latter approach relaxes the sampling requirement but suffers from the lack of user control. To tackle these problems, we proposed a variational method for designing feature-aware B-spline curves on surface meshes. Given the recent advances in shell space construction methods, we could relax the B-spline curve inside a simplified shell mesh and evaluate its distance to the surface using equipped bijective mapping. To effectively minimize the distance between the curve and the surface, with additional controls in the form of both internal and external constraints, we applied the interior point method and adaptively inserted knots of the spline to increase its freedom and adjust the weighting during the iterations. When the curve is close enough to the surface, it can be efficiently sampled at any resolution and robustly projected to the surface. Experiments show that our method is more robust, has higher flexibility, and generates smoother results than existing methods.
RECONSTRUCTION OF SYMMETRIC B-SPLINE CURVES AND SURFACES

Abstract:A method to reconstruct symmetric B-spline curves and surfaces is presented.The symme- try property is realized by using symmetric knot vector and symmetric control points.Firstly,data points are divided into two parts based on the symmetry axis or symmetry plane extracted from data points.Then the divided data points are pararaeterized and a symmetric knot vector is selected in order to get symmetric B-spline basis functions.Constraint equations regarding the control points are deduced to keep the control points of the B-spline curve or surface to be symmetric with respect to the extracted symmetry axis or symmetry plane.Lastly,the constrained least squares fitting problem is solved with the Lagrange multiplier method.Two examples from industry are given to show that the proposed method is efficient,robust and able to meet the general engineering requirements.

Abstract:Interpolation of data points is a fundamental problem in the field of CAD/CAM, geometric modeling and computer graphics and so on [1, 11-19]. Sampled or given data points are usually interpolated by using B-splines in many applications [1, 2, 3, 11-16, 19]. However, we also need to interpolate a set of infinitive data points, for instance, pieces of surfaces, textures, tiling and continuous functions defined on a subset of Euclidean space. Here we interpolate some surfaces as a whole instead of some sampled data points. The problem of finding fillet surfaces for a set of given surfaces can be considered as an example. We aim to construct a smooth surface in the whole domain, which interpolates these given surfaces defined on some sub-domains. In fact, some special cases have already been studied with different methods and view points. Given four boundary curves and corresponding derivatives along the input curves, the Coons patches are bicubically blended with the given curve data which consists of infinite data points [1, 5]. The CBarnhill, Birkhoff and Gordon approach for triangular Coons patches can be explained as follows. Suppose we are given three boundary curves. We seek a surface that interpolates to all three of them, namely, a transfinite triangular interpolant [1, 6]. More Coons type interpolants are proposed over triangles, and a general interpolant called N-sided surface patches is proposed by J. Gregory [7]. Abstract:Taking advantage of orthogonality, locality and oscillation of non-uniform B-spline wavelets, a new fairing algorithm for rational B-spline curve was studied. Various knots selection methods were used to decompose the non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) curve.The global and local fairing for the NURBS curve were implemented through approximation. The problem of position and tangent preserving at end points were dealt with by adding constraints. The applications in RE-SOFT,a reverse engineering software developed by Zhejiang University, showed that the fairing algorithm based on non-uniform B-spline wavelets decomposition can efficiently remove the bad points and improve the quality of the curve.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the idea of profit and loss modification, we present the iterative non-uniform B-spline curve and surface to settle a key problem in computer aided geometric design and reverse engineering, that is, constructing the curve (surface) fitting (interpolating) a given ordered point set without solving a linear system. We start with a piece of initial non-uniform B-spline curve (surface) which takes the given point set as its control point set. Then by adjusting its control points gradually with iterative formula, we can get a group of non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) with gradually higher precision. In this paper, using modern matrix theory, we strictly prove that the limit curve (surface) of the iteration interpolates the given point set. The non-uniform B-spline curves (surfaces) generated with the iteration have many advantages, such as satisfying the NURBS standard, having explicit expression, gaining locality, and convexity preserving, etc.

Abstract:In the curved surface molding of automobiles’ covering components, large amounts of data should first be sampled, and be fitted to curves with the conventional data-fitting method. Then the curves are connected to face and given corresponding molding processing, and the required effect of the curves is being smooth and accurate. The conventional data-fitting method is improved in this paper considering practical application, and the accuracy is increased with the same amount of sampling data. In practical application, this method can lessen labor intensity by decreasing measured data amount, which increases work efficiency and doesn’t affect the curve fitting accuracy. So it has good engineering application value.

Abstract:Non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) surface fitting from data points is wildly used in the fields of computer aided design (CAD), medical imaging, cultural relic representation and object-shape detection. Usually, the measured data acquired from coordinate measuring systems is neither gridded nor completely scattered. The distribution of this kind of data is scattered in physical space, but the data points are stored in a way consistent with the order of measurement, so it is named quasi scattered data in this paper. Therefore they can be organized into rows easily but the number of points in each row is random. In order to overcome the difficulty of surface fitting from this kind of data, a new method based on resampling is proposed. It consists of three major steps: (1) NURBS curve fitting for each row, (2) resampling on the fitted curve and (3) surface fitting from the resampled data. Iterative projection optimization scheme is applied in the first and third step to yield advisable parameterization and reduce the time cost of projection. A resampling approach based on parameters, local peaks and contour curvature is proposed to overcome the problems of nodes redundancy and high time consumption in the fitting of this kind of scattered data. Numerical experiments are conducted with both simulation and practical data, and the results show that the proposed method is fast, effective and robust. What's more, by analyzing the fitting results acquired form data with different degrees of scatterness it can be demonstrated that the error introduced by resampling is negligible and therefore it is feasible.

Abstract:Surface fitting from curves is a basic problem in CAGD.However,the existing algorithms cannot control the fitted error between the fitted surface and the input curves.In order to solve this problem,a new algorithm is proposed to construct a B-spline surface by fitting four boundary curves and a set of unorganized curves.The approach first constructs a base surface from the boundary curves,and then subdivides the surface and input curves into Bézier form.Borrowing the idea from surface skinning,the algorithm obtains the linear equation system with C1 continuity constraint about the surface to be fitted.Then we use SVD and energy minimization to obtain the fitted surface.The new knots will be inserted into the surface where the distance is larger than the error until the distance is small enough.Several experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is more numerical stable than the previous methods,and can generate smooth surface whose fitted error is smaller than the user specified tolerance.

Abstract:Two methods for fitting triangulated, disk-like region with bicubic B-Spline surfaces are presented. Both methods are based on a parameterization of the region. One method is to fit the region with a single B-spline patch, the other is to fit the region with in B-spline patches which connected with G(1) continuity. The later method con be used to fit arbitrary topological triangulated models region by region and can ensure regions be stitched smoothly along their common boundaries.

Abstract:Curves on surfaces play a significant role in CAD/CAM. This paper presents a novel curve fitting method in the case that both the sampled points and the corresponding fitting curve are constrained to lie on a smooth surface. Using the feature sensitive metric on the basis of the intrinsic geometry of surface, we accurately capture the shape of ordered point set. To produce a high-quality curve approximation, adaptive knot placement technique with curvature estimation control is adopted. Abstract:The problem of fitting B-spline curves to planar point clouds is studied in this paper. A novel method is proposed to deal with the most challenging case where multiple intersecting curves or curves with self-intersection are necessary for shape representation. A method based on Delauney Triangulation of data points is developed to identify connected components which is also capable of removing outliers. A skeleton representation is utilized to represent the topological structure which is further used to create a weighted graph for deciding the merging of curve segments. Different to existing approaches which utilize local shape information near intersections, our method considers shape characteristics of curve segments in a larger scope and is thus capable of giving more satisfactory results. By fitting each group of data points with a B-spline curve, we solve the problems of curve structure reconstruction from point clouds, as well as the vectorization of simple line drawing images by drawing lines reconstruction.

Abstract:Algebraic curve fitting based on the algebraic distance is simple, but it has the disadvantage of inclining to a trivial solution. Researchers therefore introduce some constraints into the objective function in order to avoid the trivial solution. However, this often causes additional branches. Fitting based on geometric distance can avoid additional branches, but it does not offer sufficient fitting precision. In this paper we present a novel algebraic B-spline curve fitting method which combines both geometric distance and algebraic distance. The method first generates an initial curve by a distance field fitting that takes geometric distance as the objective function. Then local topology-preserving calibrations based on algebraic distance are performed so that each calibration does not produce any additional branches. In this way, we obtain an additional branch free fitting result whose precision is close to or even better than that produced by purely algebraic distance based methods. The adopted precision criterion is the geometric distance error rather than the algebraic one. In addition, we find a calibration fatigue phenomenon about calibrating strategy and propose a hybrid mode to solve it.

Abstract:This paper presents a fast algorithm (BS2 Algorithm) for fitting C-1 surfaces to scattered data points. By using energy minimization, the bivariate spline space S-2(1)(Delta((2))(m,n)) is introduced to construct a C-1-continuous piecewise quadratic surface through a set of irregularly 3D points. Moreover, a multilevel method is also presented. Some experimental results show that the accuracy is satisfactory. Furthermore, the BS2 Algorithm is more suitable for fitting surfaces if the given data points have some measurement errors.
