Abstract:This quasi-experimental study investigated the effect of the three types of premodified input — lexical simplification, lexical elaboration and lexical (textual) enhancement — on college students’ English reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. The results showed that lexical enhancement called participants’ attention to the target linguistic terms and resulted in their better performance on reading comprehension test and vocabulary test. The participants in both lexical simplification group and lexical elaboration group obtained lower mean scores on reading comprehension test than those in the control group whereas the participants in lexical elaboration group obtained a higher mean score on vocabulary test than those in the control group. The results indicated a facilitated role of lexical enhancement in foreign language learning and furthermore a facilitative role of lexical elaboration in vocabulary acquisition. In addition, it signified that for intermediate to higher level foreign language learners, lexical simplification and lexical elaboration hardly show a useful effect on reading comprehension.
