Abstract:When total income consists of a number of factors, the Gini coefficient measuring income inequality can be decomposed into factor components. Some traditional decomposition methods rely on calculating the covariances between incomes and their ranks. Such methods have obvious limitations in empirical studies. This paper develops a simple decomposition approach applicable for any type of data with an example to demonstrate how income inequality in rural China in 1992 can be decomposed into agricultural and non-agricultural components.

Abstract:A new method is proposed to decompose inequality changes as measured by the Gini index into structural effects, real inequality effects and interactive effects. Application of the method to updated Chinese data reveals that structural effects represent the driving force underlying the increasing trend in regional income inequality in rural China. Policy implications are explored. In addition to these contributions, considerable efforts are made to construct the income data used in the article. Pitfalls in measuring income inequality in rural China are discussed.

Abstract:The paper investigates income inequality in urban China by using 2002—2007 UHS datasets.It finds that:(1) The Gini coefficient rose first and then fell,and it's 0.342,0.361 and 0.349 for 2002,2004 and 2007 separately.(2) The effects of real estate market and finance market on enlarging income inequality are increasingly stronger.Income from wealth has become the third important factor affecting income inequality,whose effects are just inferior to those of wage income and net public transfer income,and its contribution rate has arrived at 7.3% in 2007.(3) Real estate investments can enlarge income inequality more greatly than finance investments because of the higher investment threshold and the lasting rise of house prices.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to introduce a new approach to the decomposition of the Gini ratio into three components, supporting them with economic and statistical rigorous interpretations. The three components are: (i) the Gini inequality within subpopulations; (ii) the net contribution of the extended Gini inequality between subpopulations; and (iii) the contribution of the intensity of transvariation between subpopulations. These components are weighted by the product of the population shares times the income shares of the corresponding subpopulations where the weights add to one.The decomposition introduced in this research is applied to the 1990 U.S. family income distribution. The population of families is disaggregated by types into the following subpopulations: (a) married-couple families; (b) male householder, no wife present; and (c) female householder, no husband present.

Abstract:The main purpose of this research is to deduce and analyse a new decomposition of the Gini index, and to present and analyse a decomposition of the generalized entropy inequality measure, deducing from the latter the particular cases corresponding to Theil, Hirschman-Herfindahl, and Bourguignon indexes. While the generalized entropy index is decomposed into its two conventional components of the inequality within and between subpopulations, the Gini index is decomposed into the following three components: (I) the Gini index within subpopulations; (II) the Gini index between subpopulations; and (III) the income transvariation between subpopulations. The Gini, Theil, Hirschman-Herfindahl and Bourguignon inequalities are applied to the 1995 italian family income distribution disaggregated by territorial area.

Abstract:When Gini coefficients are decomposed by class (e.g. occupation, sex, region, and so on, it is possible to examine how income inequality can be measured by its class components: intra-class, inter-class and overlapped. In the literature, there have been many studies on the decomposition methodology but most methods are either inflexible or too onerous for empirical analysis. This paper develops a new approach to overcome the shortcomings of existing studies. An example using the most recent Chinese rural income data is provided to demonstrate how this method can be applied to study regional income inequality.

Abstract:Besides a brief historical outline of the Gini index decomposition proposals, we compare, in a subgroups framework, the decompositions of the Gini index and of the uniformity and inequality indexes recently proposed by Zenga. The two decompositions follow a similar scheme: in both cases the overall index can be at first expressed as a weighted average of convenient “cross” measures, with their own interpretation, and afterwards it is decomposed into a within and a between term by merely distinguishing measures evaluated within the same subgroup from the ones regarding different subgroups. This procedure does not depend on an a priori definition of the within or the between term and allows their contribution to be naturally evaluated preserving the structure of the index itself. In the last section the two decompositions are applied to the Italian net household wealth provided by the 2006 central Bank of Italy sample survey on household budgets. Après une concise revue de la littérature sur la décomposition de l'indice de concentration de Gini en sous‐groupes, cette article confronte les décompositions de la mesure de Gini avec celles d'uniformité et d'inégalité récemment proposées par Zenga. Les deux décompositions suivent un approche similaire: l'indice global d'inégalité s'écrit sous la forme d'une moyenne pondérée des adéquates mesures croisés, de facile interprétation. Après il est décomposé en deux composantes: celle entre les groupes et celle dans les groupes, simplement avec la séparation des comparaisons à l'intérieur de chaque groupe de celles entre les différents groupes. Cette procédure est indépendant d'une définition a priori des éléments entre les groupes et dans les groupes et elle est capable de calculer leurs contributions à l'inégalité totale et de préserver la structure de l'indice. Dans le dernier paragraphe les deux décompositions sont appliquées aux données sur la richesse des ménages italien récoltées par le sondage de 2006 de la Banque Centrale d'Italie.

Abstract:Graphical analysis is used to illustrate the process of decomposition be tween-groups and within-groups, and then application of Gini coefficient between groups and addictively decomposition of Gini coefficient within-groups are discussed. The article indicates that Gini coefficient can only be decomposed partly because of the troublesome residual term, and can not be addictively decomposed within-groups. Only if the subgroup income ranges overlap lightly, the residual term can be neglected , and then the decomposition within-groups can have a clear implication.

Abstract:This study proposes a new approach to analyse the effects of an overlap term on the calculation of the overall Gini coefficient and estimates China's Gini ratios since the adoption of the economic reform and open-door policies. A decomposition of the Chinese Gini coefficient for 1978–2010 reveals that the key factor contributing to income inequalities is the income disparity between rural and urban inhabitants. We further investigate the features of this income inequality between rural and urban areas and employ statistical approaches to evaluate the effects of urbanisation and rural-to-urban average income on nationwide income inequality. The results show that accelerating the pace of urbanisation is mainly responsible for decreasing China's income disparity. Drawing on these results, we conclude with suggestions for related policies.

Abstract:This paper presents an alternative decomposition method to explore the driving forces of change in carbon emissions by using distance functions estimated by data envelopment analysis. The proposed approach can isolate the effects of changes in GDP composition and energy supply composition on the change of carbon emissions. In addition, it is capable of identifying the effects of changes in different input ratios, which may be very important if there are substitution effects among different inputs. Moreover, the proposed model can measure the effects of changes in good and bad output technical efficiencies. Consequently, this decomposition technique allows a change of carbon emissions to be decomposed into contributions from ten factors, which provides more insights for policy makers. We apply this model to decompose carbon emissions in 25 OECD counties and China. For the sample countries as a whole, the empirical results indicate that the economic growth is the crucial driver to carbon emissions increase, while the changes in GDP composition and capital–energy ratio are two main drivers to carbon emissions reduction. In particular, we discuss in detail the driving forces of China's carbon emissions change in order to propose some valuable policy implications for China from an international perspective.

Abstract:Economic inequality that arises due to circumstances is unfair, whereas fair inequality is the one that emerges because of differences in individual efforts. We assume that an individual's income is determined only by circumstances and efforts, where both factors are evident and can be ordered. We then decompose the Gini coefficient into unfair, fair, and residual Gini. The last component emerges whenever circumstance and effort jointly affect income differences, where distinguishing between fair and unfair inequalities becomes impossible.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to develop two poverty decomposition frameworks and to illustrate their applicability. A given level of poverty is broadly decomposed into an overall inequality component and an overall endowment component in terms of income or consumption determinants or input factors. These components are further decomposed into finer components associated with individual inputs. Also, a change in poverty is decomposed into components attributable to the growth and redistributions of factor inputs. An empirical illustration using Chinese data highlights the importance of factor redistributions in determining poverty levels and poverty changes in rural China.

Abstract:In recent years, a large number of empirical articles on structural decomposition analysis, which aims at disentangling an aggregate change in a variable into its r factors, has been published in this journal. Commonly used methods are the average of the two polar decompositions and the average of all r! elementary decompositions (Dietzenbacher and Los, 1998, D&L). We propose to use instead the ‘ideal’ Montgomery decomposition, which means that it satisfies the requirement of factor reversal imposed in index number theory. We prefer it to the methods previously mentioned. The average of the two polar decompositions is not ‘ideal’, so that the outcome depends on the ordering of the factors. The average of all elementary decompositions is ‘ideal’, but requires the computation of an ever increasing number of decompositions when the number of factors increases. Application to the example of D&L (four factors) shows that the three methods yield results that are close to each other.

Abstract:Data show that an increase in the Gini coefficient is associated with a falling bottom % income share and an increasing top % income share where, for example = 40 and = 1. This relationship, which we call the inequality relationship, is pervasive in the sense that it is observed in many countries, including the US, the UK, France and others. The purpose of this paper is (i) to construct a Schumpeterian growth model to explain the relationship, and (ii) to identify/quantify factors behind it via calibration of the US economy. Our model gives rise to a double-Pareto distribution of income as a result of entrant and incumbent innovations. Its advantage is that it allows us to develop iso-Gini loci and iso-income share schedules in a tractable way. Using a double-Pareto distribution as an approximation of an underlying income distribution, calibration analysis reveals that a declining business dynamism and fiscal policy changes in the past decades played a significant role in generating the inequality relationship in the US.

Abstract:The main objectives of the paper are to decompose Atkinson's measure into within-group and between-group inequality and to compare it with decompositions of inequality measures, like the Gini coefficient, variance of logarithms, Theil's entropy index and the square of the coefficient of variation. Atkinson's inequality index is given an interpretation of mean order β and then it is decomposed for population subgroups. Various other measures are considered for decompositions and a variety of decomposition schemes for Gini coefficient and other measures in the literature is reviewed and commented upon. Empirical analysis using U.S.A. and U.K. data are performed on the basis of income distribution data classified by family size. For various decomposition schemes, contribution to between size-group and within size-group inequalities are compared in percentage terms. Comparisons are also made over time for the years 1964 and 1974 both for U.S.A. and U.K. and the result indicates that within size-group income inequality has declined while between size group and total income inequality shows an increase. Three important properties of Atkinson's inequality index are proved in the appendix.

Abstract:This paper explores pitfalls in regression-based inequality decompositions. A simple procedure is developed for rectifying these pitfalls. The procedure does not impose any restrictions on the underlying regression model and it can be applied to any inequality measure(s). Once combined with conventional decomposition methods or the Shapley value approach of Shorrocks (1999), what is being proposed becomes a most general and powerful framework for regression-based inequality decomposition. Empirical examples are provided to demonstrate the use of the procedure, and to contrast our results with those based on recent developments of Fields and Yoo (2000) and Morduch and Sicular (2002).

Abstract:We present an alternative decomposition technique to identify the factors which contribute to the change of aggregate CO2 emissions by using distance functions to model the joint production of desirable and undesirable outputs. The key feature of the proposed approach is the introduction of inputs/outputs factor efficiencies, specified as distance functions, to the decomposition model. By using the proposed approach, the components driving the change of CO2 emissions are decomposed into the contributors from nine factors specified in this paper, and several production technology related components are included. This paper applies the model to data from developing countries. For the 20 developing counties as a whole, empirical results indicate the economic (GDP) growth is the most important contributor to CO2 emission increase, while good output technical change is the most important component to CO2 emission reduction between 1995 and 2005. The empirical results also provide extensive insights into the components driving CO2 emissions for each country between 1995 and 2005.

Abstract:Using two large samples for 1988 and 1995 we decompose the Gini coefficient of household income according to type of income with the purpose of analyzing reasons for the rapid increase of inequality. The results show that the change in relative size of money income and its changed profile are found to be the major processes behind the rapid increase of income inequality in rural China. Changes in housing allocation and an increased number of retirees in combination with higher benefits have made inequality increase in urban China and in China as a whole.

Abstract:There are in the literature many different formulae and methodologies for deriving and decomposing Gini coefficients. Needless to say, different methodologies have their own advantages and limitations. Some Gini formulae are unnecessarily complicated and impractical. Some are biased estimators and/or not decomposable. This paper presents a simple and exact formula and develops a systematic procedure for decomposition by population class and income source in a spreadsheet without using matrix algebra, integration, regression and covariances. The Gini formula and decomposition method can be used for individual data and for evenly or unevenly grouped data. Many complicated concepts regarding the Gini and its components are given an intuitive economic interpretation. A household survey data set for Sichuan, China, is used to demonstrate, step by step, how the methodology is applied in empirical analyses.
