Abstract:The general tendency of the imperial examination in Song dynasty was to value the meaning of the classics but despise the poetry and poetic essay. However,the tradition that selecting scholar by judging their poetry stemmed from edify of the forefathers. All the process of the imperial examination in Song dynasty accompanied with the activity of poetry creation. Even outside the examination,there was also a great amount of activity of poetry creation. Particularly,there were compositions in Luming banquet,for handing up during the process of rushing toward examination,in the responsory among the examiner during their being arrested in palace,for emperor to award the student passed the exam,etc. At the same time,the common practice of submitting the composition to examiner continued. The responsory among the examiner during their being arrested in palace had the most extensive material because it was not restricted by the examination. The poetry which was used to award the successful students was relatively stylized. Other relating composition involved poetry for seeing off the students to participate the examination,congratulations to the student who had passed the examination,comforting the failing ones,pouring out one's heart when becoming successful. These compositions showed variety of the students' life mood. In general,the imperial examination was always the most significant element in impelling and promoting the composition of poetry. The interaction between the poetry creation and imperial examination is an important evidence to prove the current custom of valuing the literature in Song dynasty.
