Abstract:This is a corpus-based study of errors of English non-finite verbs committed by Chinese college non-English major learners.In the study,the error frequencies of English non-finite verbs between two sub-corpora of CLEC have been compared.Through classification and analysis,the sources of errors of English non-finite verbs have been found out,which include hypercorrection,false analogy,misanalysis,literal translation and teacher talk.

Abstract:The causative sentences in modern Chinese refer to the sentences indicating causative meaning in which the causative verbs are followed with the objects to be predicative.This paper begins with an investigation of 2,117 verbs in Verb Usage Dictionary and then puts them into four groups of causative verbs matched with the meaning of causative sentences.It proposes three formal features of causative verbs.The paper points out that causative sentences arrange different semantic roles via ways of retaining,discarding,and adding so as to realize the causative meaning of this sentence construction from the perspective that the arguments in causative sentences are crossed and fused with the verbs in sentences.Finally,with examples,it analyzes the pragmatic values of causative sentences,puts forward that causative sentences provide us with the choices of sentence constructions to express the causative meaning very clearly,and that they enrich the ways of causative meaning expression in Chinese.

Abstract:In the causative voice sentence that is composed of the Chinese verbal ending hua,hua is featured by its linguistic characteristics "to change something" and "setting in a critical situation." It has the function of a causative verb and the meaning of causative voice,and links causative reason and causative object to actualize the meaning of causation.With a syntactic comparison,this paper reveals the pragmatic value of the causative voice sentence that includes hua.

Abstract:Argument structure defines the semantic relationship between the predicate and subordinate nouns and noun phrases.Causative sentences mean that a state of a being is caused by the action of an agent and its subsequent influence.Argument structure alternation is the rearrangement of the argument of verbs to express the same meaning.A comparison between English and Chinese causative sentences argument structure alternations is made to find out the similarities and differences.Some common mistakes concerning psychological causative verbs in English and Chinese translation are dealt with.It is hoped that some light will be shed on further studies in causative sentence translation.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the grammar character of the special words in factitive sentence, and points out that the developing of the causative words form a continuum. On the basis of the research of the grammar character of N1 and N2, and the relationship between them and the causative words, it distinguishes the four basic types of the factitive sentence. At last, it points out that the causative meaning comes from the grammar character of the causative words and the special meaning of the factitive sentence.

Abstract:This article aims to investigate the acquisition of Chinese causative constructions by native English speakers based on a translation task.The results show that among the different types of causative constructions,they acquire the periphrastic type,which comes earlier,better than the morphological and lexical types.The reason is that they are limited by their low proficiency of Chinese as they are only elementary learners.Their first language contributes to the acquisition of the periphrastic type,but it seriously hinders the acquisition of those Chinese causative constructions which are corresponding to their English counterparts that are formed with psych causative verbs.Finally,the article explores the implications of this study for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

Abstract:Based on the caused eventuality, causation can be subdivided into causation of an activity and causation of change of state. By analyzing how causatives are expressed in European Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese, this study shows that these two languages exhibit quite a lot of differences in expressing causation of change of state. We have observed that quite many Portuguese verbs which intrinsically involve causative meanings do not have Chinese equivalence in simplex verb forms – their Chinese counterparts often take complex forms, including a construction we call “Causative Resultative V-Vs” (CR V-Vs). Difference is also found in the derivation direction: whereas anticausation plays a big role in Portuguese, causation is the main process in Chinese. We attribute the contrast to different expressing powers of verb roots in the two languages: while Portuguese verb roots are able to express complex meanings, Chinese roots mostly denote either a pure activity or a pure state/result.

Abstract:Abstract Causatives and passives are two different types of syntactic constructions, but their interaction can be observed cross-linguistically. By investigating the causative-passive correlation in Chinese, English and French, we try to offer an appropriate account for the causative-passive correlation by specifying its necessary conditions. We argue that the constructions which involve the causative-passive correlation must be mono-phasal, and the embedded object can be co-referred to the matrix subject by syntactic movement.

Abstract:The DE inverted causative structure in Chinese is characterized by the productivity of the verb,the unselectedness of the subject,and the inversion of the arguments,all of which demonstrate its constructional status in mental grammar.In accordance with the spirit of Construction Grammar,an account of the inverted structure can be readily extended to the more common DE causative constructions.The action chain in Cognitive Grammar serves as the conceptual basis of the construction,which coerces the verb meaning in the inverted structure.The DE causative construction differs from the lexicalized resultatives in the status of the object NP and the constructional iconicity,illustrating the decisive role of meaning on form.

Abstract:This study investigated the probability distribution of cause-effect language produced by four different groups of speakers, ESL and non-ESL high school and primary students. Results showed that, regardless of speakers' English proficiency, the probability distribution of causal linguistic features produced by native speakers fitted the right-truncated modified Zipf-Alekseev model, while this model did not capture the distribution of causal linguistic features identified in nonnative speakers' speech. The results of current research suggested that the right-truncated modified Zipf-Alekseev model has the potential of differentiating between native and nonnative causal discourses. In addition, the fitting results shed light on relationship between parameters (a and b) and students' proficiency levels as well as tentatively offer an alternative to systemic functional linguistic (SFL) method of evaluating students' causal language use.

Abstract:This article examines Talmyan claims on the order, linguistic form, and Figure/Ground alignment of causing events and caused events. Narratives are elicited from a set of 20 video clips of real situations. 50 native speakers of Mandarin Chinese were interviewed to set up a closed corpus of 1000 causative sentences. It is found that the data fell into three major types: the causing events are represented prior to the caused event; the caused events are specified initially in bei-construction; the caused events appear independently. The results suggest that Talmyan claims about the morphosyntactic features of causative expressions are not universal. The patterns in which causal events are described appear to be language specific and context dependent. It is hypothesized that causative expressions are best characterized in terms of continuums: the continuum of causative constructions; the continuum of causative elements; the continuum of causing event; and the continuum of caused events.

Abstract:In this paper a systematic study of the causative construction represented by N1+V+得+N2+VP/AP is carried out from both the perspective of cognitive category and that of grammatical blending,so as to seek the rationale for the development of a special causative type instantiated by Na ping jiu he de wo yun tou zhuan xiang.Through an exploration of the motivational relations between this causative type and other category members of the N1+V+得+N2+VP/AP causative construction,certain dubious views on the nature of the causative type are addressed and refuted.

Abstract:Causal clauses introduced by yīnwèi in Chinese can have either an initial position or a final position with regard to the main clause. While traditional grammars have treated the initial sequence as the default form, numerous discourse-based studies have shown just the opposite. However, few have attempted to explain why both sequence orders exist and why they have skewed distribution patterns across discourse registers. In this paper we use a telephone conversation corpus and a written Chinese corpus as data and provide a comprehensive analysis of the usage patterns. Our main findings are that final and initial causal clause sequences are ostensibly two different linguistic constructions, functioning as an interactional device and an information-sharing device, respectively. Quantitative distributional disparities are seen as a function of the discourse utilities of the linguistic devices in question and the communicative demands of different registers. From a cross-linguistic perspective, our findings raise questions about the ways in which universal and language-specific properties of clause sequencing can be better understood.

Abstract:This phraseological study argues that the causative construction [make Object to Verb] ([make O to V]) derived from [make O V] is acceptable when a semantic approach is adopted, and clarifies that: (i) the essence of communication is to convey meaning, which is reflected in syntactic patterns and (ii) semantics takes priority over syntactic patterns. The semantic and syntactic features of [make O to V] were semantically examined and the extended constructions in other causative constructions, such as [get O to V], [have O V], and [let O V], were assessed. Because these are generally low-frequency, age-old contemporary English constructions, the derived constructions with causative usages, such as [make O to V], [get O V], [have O to V], and [let O to V], were found to be hindered by prescriptive grammar. As this study was focused on meaning, examining usages considered incorrect can reveal new unobserved language aspects.
