Abstract:Nontransference of charge is an essential aspect of the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation for infinite-energy hadron-hadron collisions. One can define experimentally a charge transfer $u$ from one c.m. momentum-space hemisphere to another. At finite energies, $u$ is not zero because the fragments may "spill over" to the other hemisphere. A model is discussed which yields an estimate of $u$. The general validity of the energy and multiplicity dependence of this estimate is then commented upon.

Abstract:We point out a problem with the formulation and derivations of sum rules for quark fragmentation functions that impacts their validity in QCD, but which potentially points toward an improved understanding of final states in inclusive hard processes. Fragmentation functions give the distribution of final-state hadrons arising from a parton exiting a hard scattering, and the sum rules for momentum, electric charge, etc express conservation of these quantities. The problem arises from a mismatch between the quark quantum numbers of the initial quark and the fact that all observed final-state hadrons are confined bound states with color zero. We point that, in a confining theory like QCD, the Wilson line in the operator definition of a fragmentation function entails that the final state in a fragmentation function includes a bound state in the external field generated by the Wilson line. We justify this with the aid of general features of string hadronization. The anomalous bound states are restricted to fractional momentum $z=0$. They tend to invalidate sum rules like the one for charge conservation when applied to the fragmentation functions inferred from experimental data, but not the momentum sum rule. We propose to exploit our ideas in future studies as a way to relate the ffs extracted from inclusive cross sections to more detailed non-perturbative descriptions of final state hadronization. We also describe scenarios wherein the traditional sum rules might remain approximately valid with a reasonably high degree of accuracy.

Abstract:We show how the limiting fragmentation phenomenon can arise from the Color Glass Condensate model of high energy QCD. We consider the very forward rapidity region in relativistic heavy ion collisions and argue that in this region, nucleus-nucleus collisions are similar to proton-nucleus collisions (up to shadowing corrections). We then use the known results for proton-nucleus cross sections to show that it leads to the phenomenon of limiting fragmentation in the very forward region of heavy ion collisions as observed at RHIC.

Limiting fragmentation as an initial state probe in heavy ion collisions

Abstract:We discuss limiting fragmentation within a few currently popular phenomenological models. We show that popular Glauber-inspired models of particle production in heavy ion collisions, such as the two-component model, generally fail to reproduce limiting fragmentation when all energies and system sizes experimentally available are considered. This is due to the energy-dependence of number of participants and number of collisions. We quantify this violation in terms of the model parameters. We also make the same calculation within a Color Glass Condensate scenario and show that the dependence of the saturation scale on the number of participants generally leads to violation of limiting fragmentation. We further argue that wounded parton models, provided the nucleon size and parton density vary predominantly with Bjorken $x$, could in principle reproduce both multiplicity dependence with energy and limiting fragmentation. We suggest, therefore, that an experimental measurement of deviation from limiting fragmentation in heavy ion collisions, for different system sizes and including the experimentally available range of energies, is a powerful test of initial state models.

Abstract:A theory for predicting fragment number and size distribution was proposed. Considering the unloading effects among fracture nucleation, a concept of minimal fragment size was introduced. With the assumption that the sites of fracture nucleation are randomly distributed in the sample, a set of enclosed equations was derived for predicting the fragment number and size distribution. Comparisons between the computations and experiments of expanding cylindrical shell and ring were made, and the results show that the theory is helpful for the prediction of fragments.

Abstract:Fragmentation methods reproduce the result of the exponential scaling full system calculation within an error about 1kcal/mol. They serve asa robust linear scaling regime of quantum treatment for large molecular systems. As the response of fragmentation methods to convergence criteria in SCF iterations is different from that of full system calculation and the propagated convergence error is much smaller than the fragmentation error, the speed of fragmentation ab initio calculation can be further enhanced via loosening the convergence criterion in the calculation of each fragment without sacrificing the accuracy of the overall energy. Tests on single configuration calculations, geometry optimization and molecular dynamics simulation are performed.

Abstract:Current all-orders proofs of factorization of hard processes are made by extracting the leading power behavior of Feynman graphs, i.e., by extracting asymptotics strictly order-by-order in perturbation theory. The resulting parton densities and fragmentation functions include non-perturbative effects. I show how there are missing elements in the proofs; these are related to and exemplified by string and cluster models of hadronization. The proofs rely on large rapidity differences between different parts of graphs for the process; but in reality large rapidity gaps are filled in

Abstract:The single-particle inclusive fragmentation function and the particle multiplicity are observables of fundamental importance in studying properties of quantum chromodynamics at colliders. It is well known that at high energies the multiplicity distribution satisfies Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling in which all moments are proportional to powers of the mean multiplicity. We prove that, under weak assumptions, the leading dependence of the fragmentation function on multiplicity is itself a kind of KNO scaling in which all moments are inversely proportional to powers of the mean multiplicity. This scaling with multiplicity additionally accounts for the dominant dependence on collision energy in the fragmentation function. The proof relies crucially on properties of the fragmentation function conditioned on the total multiplicity and application of the Stieltjes moment problem. In the process, we construct a novel basis of the fragmentation function expressed as an overall exponential suppression times a series of Laguerre polynomials. Abstract:We consider a family of quantum many-body Hamiltonians that show exact Hilbert space fragmentation in certain limits. The question arises whether fragmentation has implications for Hamiltonians in the vicinity of the subset defined by these exactly fragmented models, in particular in the thermodynamic limit. We attempt to illuminate this issue by considering distinguishable classes of transitional behavior between fragmented and nonfragmented regimes and employing a set of numerical observables that indicate this transition. As one of these observables we present a modified inverse participation ratio (IPR) that is designed to capture the emergence of fragmented block structures. We compare this block IPR to other definitions of inverse participation ratios, as well as to the more traditional measures of level-spacing statistics and entanglement entropy. In order to resolve subtleties that arise in the numerics, we use perturbation theory around the fragmented limit as a basis for defining an effective block structure. We find that our block IPR predicts a boundary between fragmented and nonfragmented regimes that is compatible with results based on level statistics and bipartite entanglement. A scaling analysis indicates that a finite region around the exactly fragmented limit is dominated by effects of approximate fragmentation, even in the thermodynamic limit, and suggests that fragmentation constitutes a phase. We provide evidence for the universality of our approach by applying it to a different family of Hamiltonians, that features a fragmented limit due to emergent dipole conservation.

Modified Fragmentation Function from Quark Recombination

Abstract:Within the framework of the constituent quark model, it is shown that the single-hadron fragmentation function of a parton can be expressed as a convolution of a shower diquark or triquark distribution function and quark recombination probability if the interference between amplitudes of quark recombination with different momenta is neglected. The recombination probability is determined by the hadron's wave function in the constituent quark model. The shower diquark or triquark distribution functions of a fragmenting jet are defined in terms of overlapping matrices of constituent quarks and parton field operators. They are similar in form to dihadron or trihadron fragmentation functions in terms of parton operator and hadron states. Extending the formalism to the field theory at finite temperature, we automatically derive contributions to the effective single-hadron fragmentation function from the recombination of shower and thermal constituent quarks. Such contributions involve single-quark or diquark distribution functions that in turn can be related to diquark or triquark distribution functions by means of sum rules. We also derive QCD evolution equations for quark distribution functions that in turn determine the evolution of the effective jet fragmentation functions in a thermal medium.
On the Condensation and fluctuations in reversible coagulation-fragmentation models

Abstract:We study the condensation phenomenon for the invariant measures of the mean-field model of reversible coagulation-fragmentation processes conditioned to a supercritical density of particles. It is shown that when the parameters of the associated balance equation satisfy a subexponential tail condition, there is one single giant particle that corresponds to the missing mass in the macroscopic limit. We also show that in this case, the rest of the particles are asymptotically \emph{i.i.d.} according to the normalized equilibrium state of the limit hydrodynamic differential equation. Conditions for the normal fluctuations and the $\alpha$-stable fluctuations around the condensed mass are given. We obtain the large deviation principle for the empirical measure of the masses of the particles at equilibrium as well.

Fragmentation processes and the convex hull of the Brownian motion in a disk

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the convex hull of the trajectory of a Brownian motion in the unit disk reflected orthogonally at its boundary, we study inhomogeneous fragmentation processes in which particles of mass $m \in (0,1)$ split at a rate proportional to $|\log m|^{-1}$. These processes do not belong to the well-studied family of self-similar fragmentation processes. Our main results characterize the Laplace transform of the typical fragment of such a process, at any time, and its large time behavior. We connect this asymptotic behavior to the prediction obtained by physicists in \cite{DBBM22} for the growth of the perimeter of the convex hull of a Brownian motion in the disc reflected at its boundary. We also describe the large time asymptotic behavior of the whole fragmentation process. In order to implement our results, we make a detailed study of a time-changed subordinator, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:The hadronization of a high-energy parton is described by fragmentation functions which are introduced through QCD factorizations. While the hadronization mechanism per se remains uknown, fragmentation functions can still be investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative study mainly concentrates on extracting genuine features based on the operator definition in quantum field theory. The quantitative research focuses on describing a variety of experimental data employing the fragmentation function given by the parameterizations or model calculations. With the foundation of the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization, the QCD evolution of leading twist transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions has also been established. In addition, the universality of fragmentation functions has been proven, albeit model-dependently, so that it is possible to perform a global analysis of experimental data in different high-energy reactions. The collective efforts may eventually reveal important information hidden in the shadow of nonperturbative physics. This review covers the following topics: transverse-momentum-dependent factorization and the corresponding QCD evolution, spin-dependent fragmentation functions at leading and higher twists, several experimental measurements and corresponding phenomenological studies, and some model calculations.

Abstract:In reaction-diffusion models of annihilation reactions in low dimensions, single-particle dynamics provides a bottleneck for reactions, leading to an anomalously slow approach to the empty state. Here, we construct a reaction model with a reciprocal bottleneck on particle dynamics where single-particle motion conserves the center of mass. We show that such a constrained reaction-diffusion dynamics does not approach an empty state but freezes at late times in a state with fragmented particle clusters, and that the late-time dynamics and asymptotic density are universal. Our setup thus constitutes a minimal model for the fragmentation of a one-dimensional lattice into independent particle clusters, and we provide exact results for the final density in the large-reaction rate limit. We suggest that the universal reaction dynamics could be observable in experiments with cold atoms or in the Auger recombination of exciton gases.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of nuclear finite-size effects on the fragmentation in heavy-ion collisions, the fragment charge distributions of ${}^{40}$Ca+${}^{40}$Ca, ${}^{197}$Au+${}^{197}$Au, ${}^{120}$Xe+${}^{129}$Sn, and ${}^{58}$Ni+${}^{48}$Ca at intermediate incident energies are studied by using the improved quantum molecular dynamics model. Both the width of the wave packet at the coordinate space and the surface energy term strongly affect the formation and stability of fragments at intermediate-low energies. The wave-packet width influences the stability and the central densities of the initial nuclei. With increase of incident energies, the influence of the detail in description of individual nucleons and of their interaction via mean field on the fragment distributions weakens gradually.

Abstract:If the number-size distribution of objects satisfies the condition N ∼ r−D, then a fractal is defined with a fractal dimension D. In many cases, fragmentation results in a fractal distribution. This is taken as evidence that the fragmentation mechanism is scale invariant. Fragments produced by weathering, explosions, and impacts often satisfy a fractal distribution condition over a wide range of scales. Most correlations for number versus size for meteorites, asteroids, and interstellar grains also satisfy the fractal condition. Fractal behavior implies scale invariance; the renormalization group approach is often applicable to scale invariant processes. Two models are considered for a renormalization group approach to fragmentation; the models yield a fractal behavior but give different values for the fractal dimension. These results indicate that the fractal dimension is a measure of the fragility of the fragmented material.

Abstract:Finite Element Method has been used to simulate the fracture and fragmentations of ductile metallic rings undergoing high rate expansions. In this paper, the numerical fragments obtained from the FEM simulations were collected for statistical analysis. It is found that: (1) The cumulative distributions of the normalized fragment sizes at different initial expansion velocities are similar, and collectively the fragment size distributions are modeled as a Weibull distribution with an initial threshold. Approximately, this distribution can be further simplified as a Rayleigh distribution, which is the special case with the Weibull parameter to be 2; (2) The cumulative distribution of the fragment sizes exhibits a step-like nature, which means that the fragment sizes may be "quantized". A Monte-Carlo model is established to describe the origination of such quantization. In the model, the fractures occur at the sites where the tensioned material necks. The spacing of the necking sites follows a narrow Weibull distribution. As the fragment size is the sum of several (a random integer) necking spacing, the distributions of the fragment sizes automatically inherit the quantum properties of the random integers as long as the spacing distributions are not so wide. The experimental results conducted on Al L04 and on OFHC agree with the analysis.
