Abstract:Flotation column is a novel type of new effective separation equipment for fine particle ore. Stirred pulp-mixing is a core component of a cyclonic-static micro-bubble flotation column. The quality of stirred pulp-mixing performance directly influences the separation effect of the flotation column. In this paper, stirred pulp-mixing performance with the effect of addition accessory (baffles and guide cylinder) was experimentally and numerically studied. The analysis show that without the addition accessory, the impeller mainly form circulation in stirred pulp-mixing and can't generate mixing flow with high shear rate and high turbulent kinetic energy in whole tank. With a guide cylinder, the axial flow is enhanced which speed up the interaction of flotation reagent with mineral as well as shorten mixing time. With the baffles, flow resistances increased, velocity decreased, as a result, prolonging mixing time. But, shearing rate is increased and the lower turbulent kinetic energy region is smallest, which makes it easy to break through the potential barrier of interfaces of solid and liquid phase in pulp-mixing process and also strengthen the interaction of flotation reagent with mineral surface.

Abstract:Providing aeration is the primary purpose of a flotation machine. Novel flotation machines have directly driven significant developments in the aeration system. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the developments and evolution of bubble generation methods used in the flotation field. The gas-in-liquid dispersion mechanisms were extracted and linked to different aerator designs. The aeration methods used in flotation were classified into six major groups and further broken down into twenty sub-types. The gas dispersion characteristics and the practical engineering features of the aerators were then critically analyzed. Based on these, an evaluation scheme for aerator performance was proposed. It was suggested that three factors – technical capability, the reliability of operation, and economic viability – made up a successful aerator. When evaluating all various aerator types discussed in the current work, it was found that it was difficult for current techniques to achieve all three goals, which suggested the future direction for developing new aerators. The results benchmark an aerator operation in a flotation machine, and the resulting reflection of the current state of bubble generation systems spurs opportunities for the development of the next generation of aerators and flotation machines. The knowledge can be translatable to other areas of application of any three-phase system.

Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing

Abstract:In recent years, with the deepening of the degree of coal mining and the improvement of the mechanization and intelligent level of coal dressing, the proportion of fine and micro-fine coal production has been increasing. Micro-fine grade separation has gradually become an important research direction in coal washing industry. This paper is based on a novel jet-stirring synergistic column flotation method, which integrates jet-impact mixing, impeller mixing, and dispersion into the structure of a column flotation tank. By combining with existing research foundations, we construct a corresponding physical model and conduct optimization studies on key parameters related to jetting, impeller mixing, and mechanism. The resulting fundamental theory provides clear insights for the engineering application of this innovative flotation technology. The effects of jet-stirring synergy on bubble adsorption and reagent adsorption were studied, and the flotation effect of the new flotation technology was experimentally verified, laying a theoretical foundation for the industrial application of the device.

Abstract:The progress of the experimental researches and numerical simulations of the flow fields in stirred tanks was described.The measurement methods of velocity fields,temperature fields,mixing time and circulation flow were introduced,and various turbulence models and the processing methods of the rotary paddles concerned in the numerical simulations of the flow fields in stirred tanks were compared and analyzed.Finally,it was pointed out that stirred tanks should be emphatically studied in heat transfer characteristics,multiphase flow and multi-parameter coupled mathematical models.

Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing

Abstract:Stirred pulp-mixing is performed before coal flotation. In this study, a two-stage stirred pulp-mixing tank was designed based on the single-stirred process to intensify the mixing effect of pulp and flotation reagents. A tank has a pitched-impeller opening-type turbine. Stirred pulp-mixing and flotation experiments were conducted on a sample of anthracite fine coal (-0.5mm) from the Xuehu Coal Preparation Plant in Henan Province, China. The results of the two-stage stirred pulp-mixing were compared with those of a single-stage stirred pulp-mixing in terms of flotation performance. Compared with the single-stage stirred pulp-mixing, two mixing areas and double-layer impeller were able to strengthen the energy input to the stirred system, thereby improving the mixing efficiency of flotation reagents and coal particles in the pulp. The two-stage stirred pulp-mixing significantly increased the flotation feed rate of the cyclone-static micro-bubble flotation column and concentrate yield, enhanced the combustible matter recovery effect of coarse particles at a suitable flotation feed rate, and ensured the recovery effect of fine particles at high flotation feed rate.

Abstract:With the advancement of technology, wastewater treatment has become a significant challenge limiting the clean and sustainable development of chemical and metallurgical industries. Foam extraction, based on interfacial separation and mineral flotation, has garnered considerable attention as a wastewater treatment technology due to its unique physicochemical properties. Although considerable excellent accomplishments were reported, there still lacks a comprehensive summary of process features and contaminant removal mechanisms via foam extraction. According to the latest research progresses, the principles and characteristics of foam extraction technology, the classification and application of flotation reagents are systematically summarized in this work. Then comprehensively commented on the application fields and prospects of iterative flotation technology such as ion flotation, adsorption flotation and floating-extraction. The shortcomings and limitations of the current foam extraction technologies were discussed, and the feasible process intensification techniques were highlighted. This review aims to enchance the understanding of the foam extraction mechanism, and provides guidance for the selection appropriate reagents and foam extraction technologies in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In mineral flotation, rheological problems have limited the efficient upgrading of low-grade and complex ores. Since pulp and froth rheology are deemed to play different roles in influencing the separation performance, in this paper, a brief review on pulp and froth rheology in flotation is provided, with an objective of developing a basic understanding of rheology in flotation. The essential variables that affect the rheology of a flotation pulp and froth are discussed. The methods for measuring pulp and froth rheology are presented. The correlations of pulp and froth rheological properties to flotation performance are reviewed. Strategies that are currently used to mitigate the deleterious effects of problematic ores in flotation are also provided for flotation optimization. Research gaps are also proposed to highlight the need of further exploration of flotation rheology in future.

Comment on characteristics of stirred equipments in flotation process

Abstract:As the main stirred equipment in flotation process, the flotator and the stirred tank have a similar action mechanism that the main parts are both the stirring device. But the two types of equipments belong to different operation units and have different functions, as well as the characteristics of corresponding action mechanism are different also. From three respects of equipment configuration, flow field characteristic under the action of stirred mechanism as well as action conditions in stirring process, characteristics of the flotator and the stirred tank are analyzed and summarized. So corresponding action characteristics and functions are defined clearly, which lays a foundation for further optimization design and reinforcement of system construction. At the same time, it is pointed out that the flotator and the stirred tank shall give full play to their functions and constitute technical requirements and security to realize efficient process flow.

Abstract:According to the present high ash content,low coal recovery rate and other difficulties in the high ash and difficult prepared slime floatation,the paper provided that the high efficient slime water slurry blending could be the effective access to solve the above difficulties.From the high efficient slime water slurry blending,the paper introduced the study progress of the mixing technology and theory for the slime water slurry and introduced the application and existing problems of the available slime water slurry blending equipment.Based on the comprehensive evaluation on the theory,method and technical study status to improve the slime water slurry blending effect,the paper studied the slime water slurry blending affected to the floatation process and the law.The paper provided that the study on the slime water slurry preparation technology in the near future should be conducted on the following four areas,including the study on the mechanisms of the agent dispersion,the particle dispersion and surface modification,the particle clashing and effective adsorption processes,the study on the flow field variation of the slime slurry under the different mixing vane structures,the study on the shear strength affected to the slime water slurry effect under the different coal quality and particle components,the development of the new high efficient slime water slurry blending equipment in order to meet the requirement of the fine and difficult preparation slime floatation technique.

Abstract:The last few decades have seen major advances in instrumentation and technology, and simplifications and modifications of new flotation plant designs. This has allowed for significant developments in process control. In particular, the development of base level process control (control of pulp levels, air flowrates, reagent dosing, etc.) has seen significant progress. Long-term, automated advanced and optimising flotation control strategies have, however, been more difficult to implement. It is hoped that this will change as a result of the development of new technologies such as machine vision and the measurement of new control variables, such as air recovery.This review looks at each of the four essential levels of process control (instrumentation, base level flotation control, advanced flotation control and optimising flotation control) and examines current and future trends within each sub-level.

Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review

Abstract:A tremendous amount of research has been done on refining the flotation process for iron ore and designing the reagents which go into it. This paper reviews the industrial practices and fundamental research surrounding iron ore flotation. The advantages and disadvantages of direct flotation, cationic reverse flotation, and anionic reverse flotation are reviewed. A novel stepped flotation technique is discussed for the treatment of carbonate-rich iron ores. The necessity of desliming to enable effective flotation is discussed in detail. Selective flocculation desliming is discussed in particular detail as it is the primary deslime methodology used in industry. This paper also describes a large variety of reagents commonly used or in development in each flotation route, covering collectors, activators, depressants, dispersants, flocculants, and frothers. The impact of the zeta potential and surface chemistry on flotation and deslime is also discussed. The aim of this paper is to provide a well-detailed, well-referenced source for the current status of iron ore flotation, and thus provide a useful guide to its future development and to further improve flotation performance for iron ore.

Abstract:Energy is of great theoretical and practical importance in flotation. Some progress has been achieved in recent years. However, the study of energy consumed in the flotation process is still not fully developed. In this review, we analyse the energy generation, energy detection, and influence of the energy level on the flotation effect, which remains a popular research category in flotation energy research. A theoretical model of flotation energy transmission and transformation is proposed. The techniques for measuring energy consumption in the flotation process are systematically summarized. The flow-field simulation method is confined to two-phase flows and is not fully suitable for three-phase flows. The motor power measurement method and dissipative structure theory analysis method are used to analyse the flotation process on the macroscopic level, while the Extended Derjaguin-landau-Verwey-Overbeek(EDLVO) theory and the flow-field test method can be used to study the microprocesses of flotation. This review provides more insight into the future research of flotation energy, and optimizes the flotation process and equipment. It is necessary to further develop flotation energy measurement technology, especially for microprocesses, in order to reveal the turbulent energy transfer efficiency in the flotation process.
