Abstract:The experiment was conducted to study the growth and physiological response of 16 mini-watermelon(Citrullus lanatus M.) cultivars to salinity stress in solution culture. The results showed that plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, length and width of max leaf, fresh mass and dry mass of all tested watermelon cultivars were decreased to different extent under salinity stress, while membrane permeability,MDA,proline and chlorophyll contents of all tested cultivars were increased obviously, and root length and root vigor of different cultivars displayed diverse response to salinity stress.Correlation analysis revealed that relative values(RVs) of all growth indicators except for root length were positively correlated with RV of dry mass,RVs of tested physiological indices apart from chlorophyll content were significantly correlated with RV of dry mass. With RV of dry mass and RVs of other growth and physiological indices that were significantly correlated with RV of dry mass as variables, systematic cluster analysis divided tested watermelon cultivars into 3 types,4 cultivars were classified as salinity tolerant cultivars,7 cultivars were moderately tolerant cultivars, and 5 cultivars were salinity sensitive cultivars.
