Abstract:In order to achieve the sustainable development, the predictive mechanism with big data-driven Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodology is proposed in this paper. The sustainable development for serious competition is often studied, however, the predictive mechanism with big data-driven Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodology is seldom mentioned in publications. This paper reports the predictive mechanism from the perspective of big data-driven Lean Manufacturing. The key techniques including PLC communication, DMAIC roadmap, SPC technique and Hypothesis Testing are utilized to eliminate the waste and obtain continuous improvement. The demonstration of calculator production indicates the predictive mechanism can effectively eliminate the waste and improve the output by 60% with the sufficient capability of Cp > 1.33 and Cpk > 1.

Abstract:There is a worldwide demand for an increasingly sustainable built environment. This has resulted in the need for a more accurate evaluation of the level of sustainability of construction projects. To do this it involves the development of better measurement and benchmarking methods. One approach is to use a theoretical model to assess construction projects in terms of their sustainable development value (SDV) and sustainable development ability (SDA) for implementation in the project life cycle, where SDA measures the contribution of a project to development sustainability and as a major criterion for assessing its feasibility.This paper develops an improved SDA prototype model that incorporates the effects of dynamical factors on project sustainability. This involves the introduction of two major factors concerning technological advancement and changes in people's perceptions. A case study is used to demonstrate the procedures involved in simulation and modeling, one outcome of which is to demonstrate the greater influence of technological advancement on project sustainability than changes in perception. Abstract:The mechanism design theory can be applied not only in the economy but also in many fields, such as politics and military affairs, which has important practical and strategic significance for countries in the period of system innovation and transformation. As Nobel Laureate Paul said, the complexity of the real economy makes it difficult for “Unorganized Markets” to ensure supply-demand balance and the efficient allocation of resources. When traditional economic theory cannot explain and calculate the complex scenes of reality, we require a high-performance computing solution based on traditional theory to evaluate the mechanisms, meanwhile, get better social welfare. The mechanism design theory is undoubtedly the best option. Different from other existing works, which are based on the theoretical exploration of optimal solutions or single perspective analysis of scenarios, this paper focuses on the more real and complex markets. It explores to discover the common difficulties and feasible solutions for the applications. Firstly, we review the history of traditional mechanism design and algorithm mechanism design. Subsequently, we present the main challenges in designing the actual data-driven market mechanisms, including the inherent challenges in the mechanism design theory, the challenges brought by new markets and the common challenges faced by both. In addition, we also comb and discuss theoretical support and computer-aided methods in detail. This paper guides cross-disciplinary researchers who wish to explore the resource allocation problem in real markets for the first time and offers a different perspective for researchers struggling to solve complex social problems. Finally, we discuss and propose new ideas and look to the future.

Abstract:Substantial progress has been made toward connecting design with science in operations management (OM) studies. However, this connection appears to be lopsided, with much more emphasis on theory-to-practice than practice-to-theory in applications of design science (DS). This imbalance tends to impede theoretical progress. To mitigate this imbalance, this paper explores the notion of mechanisms as boundary objects between design and science. First, we outline the problem-solving cycle of DS and the research products it generates. Subsequently, we elaborate on mechanisms, mechanism-based explanations, and law-statements, and how these concepts inform the products of DS research. The argument then turns to how causal mechanisms can be inferred in the DS problem-solving cycle. Finally, we propose a framework for closing the self-reinforcing loop between science and design, which allows OM scholars to more effectively produce practical outputs as well as theoretical breakthroughs.

Abstract:We formulate and study the algorithmic mechanism design problem for a general class of resource allocation settings, where the center redistributes the private resources brought by individuals. Money transfer is forbidden. Distinct from the standard literature, which assumes the amount of resources brought by an individual to be public information, we consider this amount as an agent's private, possibly multi-dimensional type. Our goal is to design truthful mechanisms that achieve two objectives: maxmin and Pareto efficiency. For each objective, we provide a reduction that converts any optimal algorithm into a strategy-proof mechanism that achieves the same objective. Our reductions do not inspect the input algorithms but only query these algorithms as oracles.

Abstract:High-end equipment with robust and excellent performance is of great significance to manufacturing automation systems. Product parameters are the foundation of performance. Usually, there is a lack of clear physical models to reveal the relationship between parameters and performance. Simulation is an important way to understand the design results of product performance parameters. However, simulations are often particularly time and resource-consuming. To address these issues, this work proposes a data-mechanism-driven product performance optimization method, which introduces Taguchi' method, nonparametric correlation testing, and multiple attribute decision making (MADM), to efficiently obtain the optimal parameter scheme. A novel MADM method is designed, which is combined with the Multi-Objective Optimization on the basis of a Ratio Analysis plus the full MULTIplicative form (MULTIMOORA) and the Variable Neighborhood Search. It has been proven that it performs better than the MULTIMOORA based on the well-known Simulated Annealing and Tabu search. Finally, taking the cutting unit of EBZ200i as a case study, we have successfully obtained the optimal parameter scheme that comprehensively performs better in terms of wear performance, robustness, and environmental economic performance.

Abstract:In this work we deploy a mechanism design approach for allocating a divisible commodity (electricity in our example) among consumers. We consider each consumer with an associated personal valuation function of the energy resource during a certain time interval. We aim to select the optimal consumption profile for every user avoiding consumption peaks when the total required energy could exceed the energy production. The mechanism will be able to drive users in shifting energy consumptions in different hours of the day. We start by presenting a very basic Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanism, we discuss its weakness and propose several more complex variants.

Abstract:The vast majority of research and practice regarding sustainable supply chains has followed an instrumental logic, which has led firms and supply chain managers to place economic interests ahead of environmental and social interests. Evidence that firms are attempting to become less unsustainable is mounting, but compensating practices such as offsetting a supply chain's negative impact on the environment and society do not create truly sustainable supply chains. This conceptual study seeks to move the field from the question of how can firms merely diminish environmental or social problems to how supply chains can become truly sustainable. To that end, we review the major weaknesses in previous logics and develop an Ecologically Dominant logic where environment and social interests supersede economic interests. To encourage a wider adoption of our perspective, the study illustrates how the Ecologically Dominant logic can advance practice and research. We do this by providing examples drawn from practice and our previous research and by offering propositions to encourage future research.

Abstract:Machine tools as indispensable tools for manufacturing products are typical high-energy, high-carbon manufacturing systems due to their larger mass, longer life cycles and huge resources and energy consumption. The current research trend of sustainable machine tools aims to reduce cost, energy consumption and increase sustainability without compromising their functionality, usability, productivity, accuracy, etc. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews about what are the key technologies for sustainable machine tools design. Thus, a comprehensive literature review of machine tool design for sustainability is needed in order to make clear how to design and evaluate sustainable machine tools from the viewpoint of life cycle sustainability analysis. The aim of this paper is to review the sustainable design and assessment aspects of machine tool design from partial goals to integrated aims according to whole sustainability dimensions such as the environment, economy and society, as well as involving key techniques in different life cycle stages. Recent research and study on improving directly or indirectly sustainability performance of machine tools according to focus points could be summarized as: design optimization of components such as lightweight using topology and bionic methods; structure design with modular design and layout; reducing cutting fluids and lubricant oil by employing minimum quantity lubrication, dry and cryogenic machining; reducing energy consumption; waste reduction by reusing, remanufacturing and recycling; sustainability assessment i.e., energy model, life cycle cost and life cycle social benefit. This paper assists designers and manufacturers to improve sustainability of machine tools by specific optimization measures in their activities.

Abstract:The need for environmental protection and increasing demands for natural resources are forcing companies to reconsider their business models and restructure their supply chain operations. Scholars and proactive companies have begun to create more sustainable supply chains. What has not been fully addressed is how organizations deal with short‐term pressures to remain economically viable while implementing these newly modeled supply chains. In this study, we use theory‐building through case studies to answer the question: how do organizations balance short‐term profitability and long‐term environmental sustainability when making supply chain decisions under conditions of uncertainty? We present five sets of propositions that explain how exemplars in green supply chain management make decisions and balance short and long term objectives. We also identify four environmental postures that help explain the decisions organizations make when dealing with strategic trade‐offs among the economic, environmental and social elements of the triple‐bottom‐line.

Abstract:<p>Sustainability assessment is growingly recognized as an effective analytical methodology and management tool useful for managing and improving sustainability performance. In this study, a novel approach of sustainability benchmark assessment is presented to overcome the performance quantification and hierarchization deficiencies of current sustainability assessment methods. A conceptual model demonstrating how sustainability assessment of mechanical manufacturing systems in the industrial sector produces mutually beneficial energy, economy and environment outcomes that serve to reduce energy and cost demand and mitigate environmental challenges is illustrated. Through constructing the sustainability index system encompassing energy, economy and environment perspectives, the energy, economy and environment-oriented assessment models are presented. Furthermore, two concepts concerning sustainability benchmark and sustainability benchmark rating are proposed to benefit the sustainable performance quantification and hierarchization of mechanical manufacturing systems. This method based on sustainability benchmark assessment is applied to a small mechanical manufacturing enterprise in China through which users can visualize and identify sustainability performance for different mechanical manufacturing systems. This approach can offer the effective feedback for users to enhance process management and technical improvement (process optimization) and to reconsider the energy, economic, and environment in new production cycle, enabling sustainability continuous cycle improvement. This study contributes a new theoretical insight for sustainability assessment by offering relational ties with technical and managerial aspects in support of industrial sustainability.</p>

Abstract:Mechanism design has traditionally assumed that the set of participants are fixed and known to the mechanism (the market owner) in advance. However, in practice, the market owner can only directly reach a small number of participants (her neighbours). Hence the owner often needs costly promotions to recruit more participants in order to get desirable outcomes such as social welfare or revenue maximization. In this paper, we propose to incentivize existing participants to invite their neighbours to attract more participants. However, they would not invite each other if they are competitors. We discuss how to utilize the conflict of interest between the participants to incentivize them to invite each other to form larger markets. We will highlight the early solutions and open the floor for discussing the fundamental open questions in the settings of auctions, coalitional games, matching and voting.

Abstract:Mechanism design is now a standard tool in computer science for aligning the incentives of self-interested agents with the objectives of a system designer. There is, however, a fundamental disconnect between the traditional application domains of mechanism design (such as auctions) and those arising in computer science (such as networks): while monetary transfers (i.e., payments) are essential for most of the known positive results in mechanism design, they are undesirable or even technologically infeasible in many computer systems. Classical impossibility results imply that the reach of mechanisms without transfers is severely limited. Computer systems typically do have the ability to reduce service quality--routing systems can drop or delay traffic, scheduling protocols can delay the release of jobs, and computational payment schemes can require computational payments from users (e.g., in spam-fighting systems). Service degradation is tantamount to requiring that users burn money}, and such ``payments'' can be used to influence the preferences of the agents at a cost of degrading the social surplus. We develop a framework for the design and analysis of money-burning mechanisms to maximize the residual surplus--the total value of the chosen outcome minus the payments required.

Abstract:Despite the strong desire to find solutions that enable sustainable development, understanding of the requirements that methods must satisfy to guide technological development toward sustainability is still quite limited. We address this challenge based on a meta-principle for sustain ability: human activities should not exceed critical ecosystem capacity, and by translating this principle into six specific requirements that sustainability assessment methods should satisfy. These necessary but not sufficient requirements are to ensure that decisions made by these methods do not demand more from ecosystems than can be supplied, and actions meant to reduce environmental impact do not shift the problem outside the system boundary. By applying these requirements to existing methods, we identify their benefits and shortcomings, and use this insight to suggest a multidisciplinary path forward. This path requires integration of methods for engineering design, with methods for considering spatial effects, socio-economic interactions, and human-natural system interactions. Such integration poses challenges and opportunities for multidisciplinary research toward solutions for sustainable development.

Abstract:Abstract Environmental sustainability represents an unavoidable design driver. The consciousness of the importance of tackle the topic of environmental sustainability since the first stages of the product lifecycle is slowly spreading through enterprises. However, although they reach this grade of awareness, it is hard to introduce additional considerations to the traditional drivers of functionality, manufacturability, assembly, cost, etc. Therefore, it is crucial to identify methods and tools to support companies in efficiently integrating environmental sustainability issues in their design process. This paper proposes an approach to identify the inputs, functionality and outputs suitable to each industrial reality. Its core is the eco-design tool matrix, that estimates the tool implementation time and suggests proper outputs; from this the necessary inputs and functional blocks are derived. The approach is applied to the cases of two Italian industries, very different one another. This proves the wide applicability of the approach. The definition of a validation procedure represents the next steps to identify the benefits of the approach.

Abstract:Abstract The development of business models that boost fundamental changes in behavior to act more economically, ecologically, and socially is a challenging task because the consideration of sustainability is a multidimensional problem characterized by uncertainty and value conflicts. In order to deal with such complex tasks, methodological and technical tool support is required. Even though tools for business model development are well-established, they typically focus on economic obligations and pay little attention to ecological and social concerns. To bridge this gap, we shed light on the question of how functions for software can be designed to respect sustainability in business models. We present a software prototype and prescriptive design knowledge in the form of design principles and features, and thereby aim to contribute to the information systems body of knowledge by providing guidance to software designers and business model developers on how to reflect on sustainability.

Abstract:Currently, studies on the energy efficiency of manufacturing systems usually lack synthetic and systematic techniques. In this paper, a holistic framework is demonstrated in order to achieve more sustainable manufacturing, which covers machine-level, system-level and life-cycle-level energy efficiency techniques. Based on these, the mechanism of how energy consumption is affected by machining processes and system operation is analyzed to achieve a comprehensive decision on energy efficiency optimization. Four main topics are included in this paper: (1) Hierarchical sustainability goals and metrics for energy-efficient manufacturing; (2) Machine-level machining processes optimization for energy efficiency enhancement; (3) System-level innovations for efficient consumption management; (4) Life-cycle level energy flow modeling and energy recycling strategy. An automotive engine manufacturing system is taken as an example to build a concrete understanding of the application of the framework. Moreover, this holistic framework establishes the theoretical basis for promoting the energy efficiency of automotive engine manufacturing systems. Furthermore, the proposed techniques can provide decision-making support for achieving sustainable manufacturing in a wider scope of mechanical manufacturing.
