Abstract:Objective To observe the changes of postoperative serum S100ββ concentration and the incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction(POCD) in elderly patients underwent elective abdominal surgery. Methods Twenty-six patients older than 65years of age,ASA class Ⅱ or Ⅲ,were studied.Serum S100ββ protein was measured before operation,at the end of surgery,6,24,48,and 72h after operation.Neurocognitive testing was performed before operation and on the 7th postoperative day. Results Serum concentrations of S100ββ increased significantly after operation, the highest level appeared at the end of surgery, the second highest level appeared at 48h postoperatively. There were 7 patients with POCD.S100ββ was found higher in patients POCD at the end of surgery and 6h postoperatively than those without POCD.Conclusion In elderly patients underwent abdominal surgery, serum concentration of S100ββ is increased after operation, which is related to POCD and it may act as an indicator to evaluate POCD in the elderly.
