Abstract:Rod‐shape, branch‐shape, bouquet‐shape and claw‐shape SrCrO4 crystals were synthesized through biomembrane/organic‐addition supramolecular templates. The shapes are mainly changed with variance of the organic reagents and organic membranes. Most of the morphologies haven't been reported in the literature. This method may meet with the requirements to synthesize materials of various morphologies and size by using different supramolecular templates. Abstract:By the employment of supramolecule templates composed of biomembrane and organic reagents, control over the morphologies and sizes of BaWO4 crystals has been successfully achieved, and a series of flower-like, sphere-like, fasciculus-like, and other morphologies of BaWO4 were obtained at room temperature. Most of the morphologies are reported for the first time. Furthermore, the control rule of supramolecule templates was also discussed. This method may satisfy the requirements of materials of various morphologies and sizes by using different supramolecule templates, and provide significant theoretical reference to the controlled synthesis of other crystals.

Abstract:PbMoO4 nanoparticles and pagodalike microcrystals have been controllably prepared by a simple sonochemical method without any surfactants. The as-prepared powders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the pH played a crucial role on the controllable synthesis of PbMoO4. Pagoda like microcrystals could be formed on acid condition, and nanocrystals were obtained in the case of pH 7 and pH 14. The synthesis mechanism was also discussed. Abstract:A systematic morphosynthesis of barium chromate particles has been performed by using double-hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs), which consist of a hydrophilic solvating block and a hydrophilic binding block, as crystal growth modifiers to direct the controlled precipitation of barium chromate from aqueous solution. Several kinds of DHBCs with different functional groups -COOH, -PO3H2, -SO3H, -SH as well as PEG-poly(aminoamine) block-dendrimer copolymers were explored for crystallization and morphology control of barium chromate. Well-defined morphologies of BaCrO4 particles can be produced, such as more or less dendritic X-shaped, elongated X-shaped, or rodlike particles, flower-like plates, ellipsoids, spheres, nanofiber bundles, nanofibers, and other more complex morphologies. In the presence of the phosphonated copolymer PEG-b-PMAA-Po3H2 (degree of phosphonation: 21%) at pH 5, large conelike bundles of nanofibers ranging from 10 to 20 nm in diameter with lengths up to 150 mum can be produced at room temperature, whereas replacement of the covalently bound phosphonate groups by the ionic salt analogue dopant fails to produce this structure, indicating the importance of the functional polymer block structures. The time-resolved formation process of the bundles of nanofibres was investigated, showing a remarkable self-similarity. At temperatures higher than 50degreesC, in plastic flasks or when undergoing continuous stirring, only ellipsoids or nearly spherical particles can be obtained. This shows that the fiber formation relies on heterogeneous nucleation and is in agreement with a recently published mechanism where fiber formation is due to the vectorially directed self-assembly of primary particles. Our results demonstrate that the integration of DHBCs, taking advantage of the experimental conditions such as crystallization sites, temperature, pH, and reactant concentration, will extend the possibilities for controlling the shape, size, and microstructures of the inorganic crystals by means of a simple mineralization process.

Abstract:Herein, we report a facile and convenient method for the synthesis of the porous coordination polymer MOF-14 [Cu-3(BTB)(2)] (H3BTB=4,4,4-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-tribenzoic acid) as microcrystals with definite shapes and crystal facets controlled by the reaction medium at room temperature. The amount of sodium acetate added to the reaction system plays a crucial role in the shape evolution of MOF-14 from rhombic dodecahedrons to truncated rhombic dodecahedrons and cubes with truncated edges and then to cubes. The addition of a base could accelerate the formation rate of crystal growth and increase the supersaturation of crystal growth, thus resulting in the formation of MOF-14 cube crystals with high-energy crystal facets. The morphological evolution was also observed for HKUST-1 [Cu-3(BTC)(2)] (H3BTC=1,3,5-benzenetricarbocylic acid) from octahedrons to cubes, thus verifying the probable mechanism of the morphological transformation. The gas-adsorption properties of MOF-14 with different shapes were studied and reveal that the porous coordination-polymer microcrystals display excellent and morphology-dependent sorption properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the obtention of MnWO4 nanocrystals with different shapes, such as: nanospheres, nanorods, and urchin-like microspheres were synthesized by a surfactant-free hydrothermal method. The as-obtained powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy. XRD patterns indicate that these crystals have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure without deleterious phases. The TEM images revealed that the pH values and precursors played a key role in the morphology-controlled synthesis of MnWO4 nanocrystals. This green method is an effective approach to the controlled growth of MnWO4 nanocrystals with different shapes, which are of interest for both theoretical investigations and practical applications. Finally, a possible growth mechanism for the formation of the MnWO4 microcrystals with different shapes was discussed in detail.

Abstract:Flowerlike nanostructures of metals or compounds show interesting physical properties. In this article, novel flowerlike BaMoO4 nanostructures were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route. The as-synthesized products were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the nucleation and growth of the flowerlike nanostructures were governed by a nucleation-dissolution-recrystallization growth mechanism. The formation of the three-dimensional flowerlike BaMoO4 nanostructures was strongly dependent on the concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Control experiments were carried out to investigate various influencing factors on the morphology of the products. Different morphologies of BaMoO4 nanostructures were synthesized through adjusting CTAB concentration, temperature, and the volume ratio of N,N-dimethylacetamide to H2O. Luminescent properties of the flowerlike and multilayered BaMoO4 nanostructures consisting of nanosheets were studied, and the flowerlike BaMoO4 nanostructures showed a strong green emission, indicating that the flowerlike BaMoO4 nanostructures have great potential to be applied in luminescent areas.

Abstract:Two novel dendritic superstructural and fractal BaCrO4 crystals were simultaneously synthesized in the same reaction system via facile vegetal bi-templates, mung bean sprouts (MBS). The two dendritic crystals in different shapes were grown on the outer surface and the inner stem wall of NIBS. The two BaCrO4 dendrites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and photoluminescence (PL). The luminescent property indicates that the products have a broad emission band peak may have applications in an electronic light device. A presumable mechanism is also given.

Abstract:Barium carbonate (BaCO3) crystals with unique hierarchical superstructures have been fabricated through a facile and controlled solution self-assembly mode in the presence of a tri-block copolymer PEO70–PPO20–PEO70 (P123). The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that the obtained BaCO3 product was indexed to pure orthorhombic phase. Notably, BaCO3 samples with well-defined hierarchical morphologies, including spherical, rod, hexangular prism, and porous spherical aggregates can be prepared by simply adjusting the polymer P123 concentrations and the ratios of [Ba2+]/[P123]. Specifically, layered screw cap, double-taper, and shuttle-shaped superstructures were formed through choosing N,N-bimethylformamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and/or toluene mixed with de-ionised water (DIW) as the reaction media in the current system, respectively. It is clearly demonstrated that varying liquid crystal-phase aggregating structures of the polymer P123 and using different solvents can indeed exert a significant influence over the selective nucleation, crystal facets preferable adsorption, and consequent over-growth for the BaCO3 primary particles. Moreover, a possible formation process for the hierarchical superstructures of BaCO3 crystals is proposed.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of hierarchical Barium molybdate (BaMoO4) nanostructures with different morphologies, such as peanut-like, cube-like and flower-like, was successfully achieved in aqueous solution at room temperature. The obtained products were characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an X-ray power diffractometer (XRD). The morphologies of the obtained products were found to be greatly dependent on reaction time, EDTA concentration and the [Ba2+]/[MoO42−] ratio. This controllable method could be readily extended to produce hierarchical Barium tungstate (BaWO4) nanostructures with peanut-like, dumbbell-like, sphere-like and flower-like morphologies. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the obtained BaMoO4 and BaWO4 nanostructures exhibited strong dependence on the morphologies and sizes, respectively.

Abstract:The preparation of nanomaterials with well-defined struc- tures has been intensively investigated during the last decade because of their unique structurally dependent prop- erties. (1) The strategies for the synthesis of hierarchical nano- materials with precisely designed structures are mainly based on templating techniques, in which construction of a proper template is of fundamental importance to the struc- ture and properties of the resulting nanomaterials. Since Manns group reported the first example of nanocubes of the coordination polymer of Prussian blue (PB) synthesized in reverse microemulsions, (2) a number of worldwide re- search teams have documented the controlled synthesis of nanoparticles by using various materials as templates. Talham and co-workers have synthesized two-dimensional PB grids by means of the supramoecular assembly of an am- phiphilic cyanoferrate derivate at the air-water interface. (3) MacLachlan and coworkers have prepared PB nanoworms and nanocontainers by the assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing cyanoferrate complexes. (4) Miniemul- sion droplets have been used to prepare hollow nanospheres and nanocubes of PB. (5) Very recently, nanocubes of PB with tunable sizes have been synthesized in the presence of poly- vinylpyrrolidone and poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(propylene glycol)-b-poly(ethylene glycol). (6) Therefore, it seems evident that new templates may lead to the formation of a catalogue of nanomaterials with unanticipated architectures. Crystalli- zation is a naturally occurring self-assembly process. Aniso- tropic alignment of polymer chains during crystallization gives rise to the formation of ordered structures, such as la- mellae of approximately 10 nm thickness, which offer a new opportunity to generate anisotropic nanoparticles with hier- archical structures. Abstract:Room temperature recrystallization is a simple and convenient method for synthesis of all-inorganic perovskite nanomaterials with excellent luminescent properties. However, the fast crystallization usually brings the colloidal stability and uncontrollable synthesis issues in the formation of all-inorganic perovskite. In the present study, we present a new strategy to prepare the quantum confined CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with controlled morphology under ambient condition. With the assist of fatty acid-capped precursor, the crystallization and the following growth rate can be retarded. Thanks to the retarded reaction, the morphology can be varied from nanowires to nanoplates and the thickness can be controlled from 5-7 monolayers by simply adjusting the amount of octylammonium cations and oleic acid. The nanoplates exhibit a higher photoluminescence quantum yield than the nanowires possibly due to fewer defects in the nanoplates.

Abstract:The crystallization of barium oxalate in the presence of a double-hydrophilic block copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly (methacrylic acid) (PEG-b-PMAA) was investigated. Barium oxalate crystals with a complex form, such as fan-like aggregates consisting of rod-like BaC2O4 . H2O crystals and spherical aggregates consisting of flake-like BaC2O4 . 3. 5H(2)O crystals were readily produced in aqueous solutions of PEG-b-PMMA. This result may provide an effective method for controlling the morphology and polymorph of inorganic crystals.

Abstract:The growth mechanism of shape-selected synthesis of nanocrystals in all systems can be attributed to an oriented surface assembly process of growth units, in the present of additives or not. In this article, we present an example displaying the influence of the surface reconstruction process of nuclei on the shape-selected growth behaviors of inorganic nanocrystals. The basic principle lies in the sufficient diffusion of growth units on crystal surfaces according to Kossel's growth model. Shape-controlled octahedral and truncated octahedral crystals of zinc tin oxide (ZTO) were successfully synthesized by pretreating precursors at room temperature without any surfactants. And, the method can be applied to CaSn(OH)(6), SrSn(OH)(6), and ZnO. We also found out that there is a linear correlativity between the truncated degrees and the amount of NaOH when studying morphological evolution behavior from an octahedron to a cube of ZTO.

Abstract:BaCrO4 nanoplates have been successfully synthesized by a NaCl-assisted aqueous solution method at room temperature without using any surfactants or templates. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses show that large-scale, single-crystalline BaCrO4 nanoplates with 300 nm in size and thickness of about 40 nm are obtained by this simple method. It suggests that NaCl is crucial to the formation of BaCrO4 nanoplates, which might provide a favorable chemical environment for the growth of nanoplates. This simple method might be useful for the synthesis of nanostructures of other chromates.
New Nonhydrolytic Route to Synthesize Crystalline BaTiO3 Nanocrystals with Surface Capping Ligands

Abstract:A new nonhydrolytic route for the preparation of well-crystallized size-tunable barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanocrystals capped with surface ligands is reported. Our approach involves: (i) synthesizing a “pseudo” bimetallic precursor, and (ii) combining the as-synthesized bimetallic precursor with a mixture of oleylamine with different surface coordinating ligands at 320 °C for crystallization and crystal growth. Different alcohols in the precursor synthesis and different carboxylic acids were used to study the effect of size and morphological control over the nanocrystals. Nanocrystals of barium titanate with diameters of 6–10 nm (capped with decanoic acid), 3–5 nm (capped with oleic acid), 10–20 nm (a nanoparticle and nanorod mixture capped with oleyl alcohol), and 2–3 nm (capped with oleyl alcohol) were synthesized, and can be easily dispersed into nonpolar solvents such as hexane or toluene. Techniques including x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and high-resolution electron microscopy confirm the crystallinity and morphology of these as-synthesized nanocrystals.

Abstract:A facile modified hydrothermal approach has been exploited to rationally synthesize perovskite-structured BaZrO3 microcrystals with the shapes of truncated rhombic dodecahedron and sphere. The polarity variation by ethanol introduction to the solutions plays a significant role in determining the geometric morphology of the final products. The BaZrO3 microcrystals can serve as host materials for rare earth photoluminescence, and shape-dependent luminescence properties of an Eu-doped material has been observed. Controlling the size and shape of perovskite oxides is of great importance both in basic and applied science due to their strong structure-dependent physical properties.

Abstract:Uniform, separated BaCrO4 single-crystalline nanofibers with high aspect ratio (>5000, see Figure) can be fabricated at room temperature in aqueous solution using a double hydrophilic block copolymer as structure-directing agent and introducing colloidal nucleation agents. Such fibers represent a model case for advanced polymer fillers and the exploration of quasi-1D nanostructures with interesting electrical, optical, or catalytic properties.
