Abstract:Heparin,as a traditional anticoagulant,is commonly used to treat cancer patients with thrombus.Clinical and experimental data have shown that heparin has anti-tumor activities.Numerous studies have also indicated that heparin has antimetastatic activities.Heparin can inhibit hematogenous metastasis through various mechanisms, including inhibiting cell- cell interactions and activity of heparanase, regulating growth factors and coagulation.Selectin is an important factor for hematogenous metastasis.Heparin can inhibit selectin-mediated tumor cells to interact with leukocytes, platelets, and endothe- lial cells. This review will discuss the mechanisms that heparin inhibits selectin-mediated metastasis and provide evidences for its clinical application.
