Abstract:Integration of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) into clinical practice, and particularly for hands-on use by doctors, has been problematic in both primary and secondary care. One of the reasons may be that existing technologies not well-suited to clinician work-practices and particularly for clinicians who are mobile. New wireless and mobile technologies that provide much greater bandwidth and linked to handheld devices are expected to offer mobile Internet and a range of other features currently not available or limited with existing technology. This will include on-line interactive video, quality images and other multimedia. Most countries have auctioned licences for 3G and carriers are preparing to offer 3G services. Australia is the second country after Japan to provide 3G with a recent live development site in the Adelaide CBD. Consumer 3G services are expected to be available shortly in some European countries and in the USA in 2003. Business sectors are currently preparing for this major change and there is significant work underway. The availability of 3G is not an if but a when. Many industries are keen to be early to take advantage of the benefits. There is significant work to be done in preparing user interfaces, reviewing work-practices and otherwise exploring the changes and benefits of the technology. There is an opportunity for healthcare in Australia to commence this work early and take advantage of available 3G expertise. This paper will explore the new technological advances and the anticipated benefits for healthcare. Health technology projects to provide systems used by doctors are inherently problematic. There are many reasons for the still limited integration of computer-based information systems into clinical practice. One of these may be clinicians are all time-pressured and some are also mobile making it a challenge for them to effectively exploit computer-based information. There are expectations that new wireless and mobile technologies will make it easier for clinicians to receive information and enter data at the point of care in any setting.
