Abstract:A facile in situ synthetic method is developed to synthesize metal sulfide nanoparticles based on 2D M-TCPP (M = Cu, Cd, or Co, TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin)) metal-organic framework nanosheets. Cu1.94S Nanocrystal Superstructure for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Ordered nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S nano superstructure are constructed and provide notably improved catalytic H2 evolution reaction performance at 2482.00 µmol g‒1 h‒1. Careful selection of metal organic framework precursors with long range metal ion alignments impact performance, as well-ordered superstructures give rise to uniform electromagnetic fields and organized interparticle interactions that facilitate charge carrier transport. These close packed nanoparticles with negatively charged carboxylate surfaces inhibit large [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 and triethanolamine transport outwards, but allow smaller H2O particles to enter superstructure interiors. In this case, separation happens not only between electrons and holes but also between reduction and oxidation zones. Abundant dangling bonds also form from the complex nonstoichiometric Cu1.94S structure and bulk aggregation of close packed Cu1.94S, up to hundreds of nanometers, provides abundant catalytic active sites.
Nanoporous core–shell Cu@Cu2O nanocomposites with superior photocatalytic properties towards the degradation of methyl orange

Abstract:We present a facile two-step strategy to fabricate a novel nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O nanocomposite photocatalyst. The photocatalyst was synthesized via the combination of dealloying of the as-milled Al66.7Cu33.3 (at.%) precursor powders in alkaline media with subsequent surface oxidation in air. The microstructure of the as-prepared photocatalyst has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that the as-prepared photocatalyst exhibits an open, bicontinuous interpenetrating ligament (ca. 30 nm)-channel (ca. 15 nm) structure, and is comprised of Cu (core) and Cu2O (shell) phases. Methyl orange (MO) was used as the model pollutant, and photodegradation experiments were monitored by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The nanoporous core-shell Cu@Cu2O photocatalyst shows excellent photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of MO under sunlight. The MO degradation rate can reach as high as 8.04 mg min(-1) g(cat)(-1). In addition, the influence of additive amounts of photocatalyst and initial concentrations of MO on the photodegradation process has been investigated. The photodegradation mechanism of the as-prepared photocatalyst has also been discussed.

Abstract:A time- and energy-saving solution-based chemical precipitation method was developed to synthesize leaf-like CuO nanostructures. The morphology and size of the leaf-like CuO nanostructures could be simply manipulated by controlling the type and concentration of precursors, and the oriented attachment mechanism is responsible for the formation of leaf-like shape. With the concurrent reduction reaction and at appropriate concentration, CuO/Ag microspheres could be prepared and the growth mechanism is proposed. These two structures could serve as effective photocatalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, compared to pure CuO nanostructures, the photodecomposition activity of CuO/Ag microspheres increases by 42.9% due to plasmon- enhanced light absorption.

Abstract:It is a great challenge to design a low-cost CuO photocatalyst with high utilization rate of visible light. Herein, a self-standing Au nanoparticles modified CuO nanowires on the nanoporous CuAu bimetal network (Au/) with hierarchical porous structure was designed through facilely free-dealloying Cu35Zr60Au5 metallic glass (MG) ribbon followed by anodizing technique. The minor addition of Au significantly reduces the size of pore/ligament of the dealloyed product and changes the morphology of CuO nanowires. In addition, the Schottky junction constructed by Au nanoparticles and CuO nanowires efficiently reduces the recombination of photogenerated electrons (e-) and holes (h+). Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect stemming from the Au nanoparticles is effective in increasing the visible light response and improving the utilization of visible light. The Au/ photocatalysts show outstanding degradation performance and excellent cycling stability for organic dyes. Furthermore, the comprehensive and in-depth understanding on photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RhB is investigated. The novel design of the self-standing Au/ hybrids facilitates the recycling use, which would largely extend commercial application prospects.

Abstract:Radial heterojunction solar cells based on n-type TiO2 nanorod arrays filled with p-type Cu2O films have been prepared. TiO2 nanorod arrays are synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction. Cu2O films are then electrodeposited at the surface of TiO2 nanorods. The efficiency of the resulting Cu2O/TiO2 nanorod radial heterojunction solar cells is up to 1.25%. Current work demonstrates that nanorod radial heterojunctions are promising structures for photovoltaic application. Electrodeposition may be used for the large-scale fabrication of low-cost solar cells based on nanorod radial heterojunctions. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:The growth of CuAl2O4/Cu hybrid nanorods in porous aluminum oxide (PAO) through barrier layers was systematically investigated through deposition conditions. Suitable deposition parameters were tried among variables including applied potential, pH value and electrolyte composition. The quality of electrodeposition and crystallization of hybrids were evaluated by SEM and XRD. It was found that applied potential affected both deposition quality and crystallization of CuAl2O4/Cu composition in CuSO4 and MgSO4 solutions at pH 3.0. Changes of pH or exclusion of MgSO4 resulted in new compositions instead of CuAl2O4/Cu hybrids. Possible mechanism of the CuAl2O4/Cu hybrids evolution was proposed thereafter. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Herein, we report an approach to prepare Cu/Cu2−xS core/shell nanorods by in situ sulfidation of copper nanorods. Firstly, copper nanorods with tunable longitudinal surface plasmon resonances were synthesized by a seed-mediated method using Au nanoparticles as seeds. A convenient in situ sulfidation method was then applied to convert the outermost layer of Cu nanorods into Cu2−xS, to increase their stability and surface activity in photocatalytic applications. The thickness of Cu2−xS layer can be adjusted by controlling the amount of S source. The Cu/Cu2−xS core/shell nanorods exhibits two characteristic surface plasmon resonances located in visible and near-infrared regions, respectively. The photocatalytic performances of Cu nanorods and their derivatives were evaluated by measuring the degradation rate of methyl orange dyes. Compared with Cu nanorods, the Cu/Cu2−xS core/shell nanorods demonstrate more than a 13.6-fold enhancement in the degradation rate at 40 min. This work suggests a new direction for constructing derivative nanostructures of copper nanorods and exploring their applications.

Abstract:Various semiconductors have been studied as photocatalysts for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in aqueous solutions. As one of the promising visible-light-driven semiconductor photocatalysts, α-Fe(2)O(3) has advantages of low cost and stability. However, its application is inhibited by the poor separation of photogenerated electron-hole pair. In this work, hybrid structures were prepared to improve the performance of α-Fe(2)O(3). CdS nanoparticles were overgrown on the preformed single-crystalline α-Fe(2)O(3) nanorods by a simple and mild one-step wet-chemical method, resulting in α-Fe(2)O(3)/CdS cornlike nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy showed the α-Fe(2)O(3)/CdS core/shell heterostructure of the nanocomposite with high crystallinity. Furthermore, the cornlike nanocomposites exhibited superior photocatalytic performances under visible light irradiation over the pure α-Fe(2)O(3) nanorods and CdS nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of the composites is superior to the previously-reported pure α-Fe(2)O(3) nanomaterials, and the performance is comparable to both the commercial TiO(2) (P25) which is used under UV irradiation and the newly developed α-Fe(2)O(3)/SnO(2) photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The enhanced performance is associated with the larger surface area of the cornlike structure, the crystalline nature of the materials and the synergy in light absorption and charge separation between α-Fe(2)O(3) and CdS. As such, our α-Fe(2)O(3)/CdS cornlike nanocomposites may be promising to be used as visible-light-driven high-performance photocatalyst.

Abstract:Ultrasmall nanoparticles with tunable photo-optical properties and colloidal nature are ideal for a wide range of photocatalytic reaction. Herein, we reported the facile synthesis of ultrasmall aluminum nanoparticles (AlNPs), which exhibited unique UV-B photoluminescence and excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence characteristic. Spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (ACTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to study the microstructure and verify the successful synthesis of AlNPs. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy was employed to gain insight into the unique photoluminescence behavior. The photocatalytic activity of ultrasmall AlNPs was evaluated by the photoreduction of resazurin (RZ) to resorufin (RF) under UV light irradiation. This photodegradation of RZ obeyed the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics with reaction rate achieved 6.62 x 10(-2) min(-1) Our study suggested that the prepared ultrasmall AlNPs have a great potential application in photocatalytic field.

Abstract:Au/Cu2O/TiO2 core-shell nanorods are successfully synthesized using a facile three-step chemical synthesis technique. The Au nanoparticles core of Au/Cu2O performed as the catalytic activity enhancer, the Cu2O shell acts as a co-catalyst. The Au/Cu2O/TiO2 nanorods show higher photocatalytic performance, excellent recyclability, and stability during the degradation of organic pollutants when compared to pristine TiO2 and Au/TiO2 nanorods, under solar light irradiation. The suitable p-n junction at the interface of Cu2O shell and the TiO2 nanorods contributes to the enhanced catalytic activity. The photo-electrochemical characteristics and the possible catalytic mechanism of Au/Cu2O/TiO2 nanorods under solar light irradiation are also investigated.

Synergistic Effects of CuO and Au Nanodomains on Cu2O Cubes for Improving Photocatalytic Activity and Stability

Abstract:Cu2O is a promising photocatalyst, but it suffers from poor photocatalytic activity and stability, especially for Cu2O cubes. Herein, we report the deposition of CuO and Au nanodomains on Cu2O cubes to form dual surface heterostructures (HCs) to improve photocatalytic activity and stability. The apparent quantum efficiency of Au/CuO/Cu2O HCs was ca. 123 times that of pristine Cu2O. In addition, the Au/CuO/Cu2O HCs maintained nearly 80% of its original activity after eight cycles in contrast to five cycles for the Au/Cu2O material. Therefore, CuO and Au domains greatly improved the photocatalytic activity and stability of the Cu2O cubes due to the synergistic effect of the HCs.

Abstract:The photocatalytic performance of ceria-based materials can be tuned by adjusting the surface structures with decorating the transition-metal, which are considered as the important active sites. Herein, cuprous oxide-metallic copper composite-doped ceria nanorods were assembled through a simple hydrothermal reduction method. The photocatalytic ammonia synthesis rates exhibit an inverted "V-shaped" trend with increasing Cu0/CuxO mole ratio. The best ammonia production rate, approximately 900 or 521 µmol·gcal-1·h-1 under full-spectra or visible light, can be achieved when the Cu0/CuxO ratio is approximately 0.16, and this value is 8 times greater than that of the original sample. The absorption edge of the as-prepared samples shifted towards visible wavelengths, and they also had appropriate ammonia synthesis levels. This research provides a strategy for designing noble metal-free photocatalysts through introducing the metal/metallic oxide compositesto the catalysts.

Abstract:We report on one-pot synthesis of various morphologies of CuO nanostructures. PEG200 as a structure directing reagent under the synergism of alkalinity by hydrothermal method has been employed to tailor the morphology of CuO nanostructures. The CuO products have been characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM. The morphologies of the CuO nanostructures can be tuned from 1D (nanoseeds, nanoribbons) to 2D (nanoleaves) and to 3D (shuttle-like, shrimp-like, and nanoflowers) by changing the volume of PEG200 and the alkalinity in the reaction system. At neutral and relatively low alkalinity (OH(-)/Cu(2+)≤3), the addition of PEG200 can strongly influence the morphologies of the CuO nanostructures. At high alkalinity (OH(-)/Cu(2+)≥4), PEG200 has no influence on the morphology of the CuO nanostructure. The different morphologies of the CuO nanostructures have been used for the photodecomposition of the pollutant rhodamine B (RhB) in water. The photocatalytic activity has been correlated with the different nanostructures of CuO. The 1D CuO nanoribbons exhibit the best performance on the RhB photodecomposition because of the exposed high surface energy {-121} crystal plane. The photocatalytic results show that the high energy surface planes of the CuO nanostructures mostly affect the photocatalytic activity rather than the morphology of the CuO nanostructures. Our synthesis method also shows it is possible to control the morphologies of nanostructures in a simple way.
Hexagonal pencil-like CdS nanorods: Facile synthesis and enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance

Abstract:In the present study, hexagonal pencil-like CdS nanorods have been successfully synthesized through a typical facile and economical one-step hydrothermal method without using any surfactant or template. The product was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDX). The results revealed that the prepared CdS photocatalyst consisted of a large quantity of straight and smooth solid hexagonal nanorods and a few nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activities of CdS nanorods and commercial CdS powders were investigated by the photodegradation of Orange II (OII) in aqueous solution under visible light, and the CdS nanorods presented the highest photocatalytic activity. Its photocatalytic efficiency enhancement was attributed to the improved transmission of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in the CdS nanostructures. The present findings may provide a facile approach to synthesize high efficient CdS photocatalysts.
Metal/TiO2 Hierarchical Nanocomposite Arrays for the Remarkable Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Metal/TiO2 hierarchical nanocomposite arrays were assembled by the deposition of aggregated TiO2 nanoparticles on anodic aluminum oxide templates and the subsequent loading of metal nanoparticles by electrochemical deposition. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized catalysts were evaluated for the degradation of organic dyes. Our experimental results demonstrated that the greatly improved photocatalytic efficiency of the metal/TiO2 hierarchical nanocomposite arrays resulted from their high surface area and symmetrical arrangement. As a prospective approach for wastewater purification, our work not only enriches the synthetic methodology for TiO2, but also provides valuable knowledge about nanosized photocatalysts.
Hollow Au-Cu2O Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Geometry-Dependent Optical Properties As Efficient Plasmonic Photocatalysts under Visible Light.

Abstract:Hollow Au-Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized by using hollow gold nanoparticles (HGNs) as the plasmon-tailorable cores to direct epitaxial growth of Cu2O nanoshells. The effective geometry control of hollow Au-Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles was achieved through adjusting the HGN core sizes, Cu2O shell thicknesses, and morphologies related to structure-directing agents. The morphology-dependent plasmonic band red-shifts across the visible and near-infrared spectral regions were observed from experimental extinction spectra and theoretical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain method. Moreover, the hollow Au-Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles with synergistic optical properties exhibited higher photocatalytic performance in the photodegradation of methyl orange when compared to pristine Cu2O and solid Au-Cu2O core-shell nanoparticles under visible-light irradiation due to the efficient photoinduced charge separation, which could mainly be attributed to the Schottky barrier and plasmon-induced resonant energy transfer. Such optical tunability achieved through the hollow cores and structure-directed shells is of benefit to the performance optimization of metal-semiconductor nanoparticles for photonic, electronic, and photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Facile and direct synthesis of porous nanorod-type graphitic carbon nitride/CuO composite (CuO-g-C3 N4 ) has been achieved by using a Cu-melamine supramolecular framework as a precursor. The CuO-g-C3 N4 nanocomposite demonstrated improved visible-light-driven photocatalytic activities. The results indicate that metal-melamine supramolecular frameworks can be promising precursors for the preparation of efficient g-C3 N4 nanocomposite photocatalysts.

Abstract:Multicomponent hybrid nanostructures exhibit multifunctional properties and synergistic performance which make them attractive materials for environmental applications. We have fabricated magnetic Au@CoFe 2 O 4 -ZnO hybrid plasmonic nanostructures using simple wet chemical route combined with photodeposition and studied their photocatalytic performance towards decomposition of synthetic dyes. XRD, FESEM and Raman were used to examine the structure and morphology of the prepared nanostructures and UV–visible spectroscopy was used for photocatalytic measurements. The solar-responsive photocatalytic decomposition of synthetic dyes MB and MO was examined and results displayed the outstanding performance of Au loaded CoFe 2 O 4 -ZnO nanostructures over CoFe 2 O 4 -ZnO photocatalysts. The prepared Au@CoFe 2 O 4 -ZnO hybrid nanostructures with higher Au loading, the sample CU3, effectively decolorized MB dye in only 20 min of sunlight exposure, achieving an apparent rate constant of 0.062 min −1 . For MO dye, the sample CU3 achieved 96.6% degradation in 60 min with an apparent rate constant of 0.022 min −1 . Mechanistic studies related to radicals responsible for the photodecomposition were discussed and results revealed that ⋅OH radicals and hot holes play major roles in photodecomposition of pollutants. Overall, Au decorated CoFe 2 O 4 -ZnO nanostructures prepared using facile photodecomposition route with excellent recyclability and effortless magnetic recovery represent a promising photocatalyst material and is highly suitable photocatalyst for environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:The construction of heterojunctions is commonly regarded as an efficient way to promote the production of hydrogen via photocatalytic water splitting through the enhancement of interfacial interactions. The p-n heterojunction is an important kind of heterojunction with an inner electric field based on the different properties of semiconductors. In this work, we reported the synthesis of a novel CuS/NaNbO3 p-n heterojunction by depositing CuS nanoparticles on the external surface of NaNbO3 nanorods, using a facile calcination and hydrothermal method. Through the screening of different ratios, the optimum hydrogen production activity reached 1603 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is much higher than that of NaNbO3 (3.6 times) and CuS (2.7 times). Subsequent characterizations proved semiconductor properties and the existence of p-n heterojunction interactions between the two materials, which inhibited the recombination of photogenerated carriers and improved the efficiency of electron transfer. This work provides a meaningful strategy to utilize the p-n heterojunction structure for the promotion of photocatalytic hydrogen production.
