Colloids and Surfaces A Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects

Abstract:Major challenges existing in the photocatalytic gas-liquid mixing system model include the mass transfer limit at the gas-liquid interface and the depth of light penetration. For this purpose, amphiphilic molecular catalysts were prepared by monovacancy phosphomolybdate modified by propyltrimethoxysilane. It is also used as a photocatalyst in the model reaction (molecular oxygen oxidation of aromatic alcohol). The amphiphilic molecular catalyst in the reaction is similar to surfactant behavior, not only can adsorb in the gas-liquid interface, ensure the direct contact between oxygen, catalyst and reactants, improve the efficiency of mass transfer, and also reduce the surface tension of aromatic alcohol, gas-liquid-solid three-phase system into foam system. The formed foam system amplifies the interface area of the reaction, enhances the light penetration depth and significantly promotes the reaction rate. The insights gained from our study provide a new perspective on the design of photocatalysis in a gas-liquid hybrid system.

Abstract:The application of microwave promoting technology in preparing heterogeneous catalysts such as metal loading catalysts,metal oxide catalysts,metal chloride loading catalysts as well as ion modified zeolites in recent years is introduced,and the experimental results obtained from the traditional and microwave heating methods are compared.It is pointed out that the microwave heating can improve the exchange rate of ion modified zeolites,bring active components rapid and homogeneous disperse on the surface of the supporter,and result in a solid ion-exchange reaction between metal chlorides and the supporter,and accordingly enhance the stability and activity of the obtained catalysts.

Abstract:The advancement of microwave-assisted catalysis technology will play a crucial role in the realms of energy conversion and catalysis. In this study, we developed a series of Pt/Al2O3-H catalysts by varying the reduction temperature and duration to control the Pt particle size, aiming to optimize the catalytic performance for microwave-assisted methylcyclohexane (MCH) dehydrogenation. Among the synthesized catalysts, Pt/Al2O3-H400-15 emerged as the most effective, characterized by Pt particles of 1.5 nm and a Pt-Pt coordination number of 2.8. This particular catalyst demonstrated a high metal-support interaction, which significantly enhanced its activity and stability during the dehydrogenation process. Notably, it showed superior performance in MCH dehydrogenation under microwave irradiation, maintaining high stability and minimal methane formation over 626 h. The enhanced catalytic behavior under microwave irradiation is attributed to the elimination of lowtemperature dead zones, which are commonly observed in traditional thermal catalysis, resulting in higher efficiency, greater activity, and reduced by-product and coke formation. This study underscores the potential of microwave-assisted catalysis as a more effective alternative to conventional thermal methods for the dehydrogenation of MCH.

Abstract:Microwave-assisted synthesis has attracted wide attention as an efficient and energy-saving synthesis strategy due to its unique heating mechanism. Environmental catalysts prepared via microwave heating process typically exhibit uniform crystal size with desired morphology, porous structure and interfacial properties, which are important for the catalytic remediation of air pollution. This review first summarizes the principles of microwave heating, followed by the characteristics of the obtained catalysts. The research progress of representative materials (e.g., supported metal catalysts, metal oxides, and porous carbon materials) in the treatment of gaseous pollutants are then categorized in detail. Meanwhile, this review compiles the recent research outputs of air pollutants remediation by environmental catalysts from the perspective of features and reaction pathways facilitated by microwave-assisted synthesis. It demonstrates that microwave-assisted heating can not only improve the synthesis efficiency and the catalytic activity but also modify the selectivity by tuning the catalyst properties. Finally, the use of microwave irradiation to activate environmental catalytic reactions is reviewed, as the application of microwaves can lead to significant improvements due to the possibility of delivering energy directly to the catalytic materials. Nevertheless, challenges remain in the development of highly active and efficient catalyst to realize its practical application. These, together with prospects on the development of environmental catalysts using microwave techniques are provided for enlightening the future of this field of research.

Abstract:Zeolites are an emerging class of crystalline, nanoporous, inorganic material with regular micropores and highly tunable functionalities. Zeolites have been proposed as ideal materials for applications in catalysis, adsorption, and biomedicine due to their notable intrinsic features such as accessible void space, large surface area, and strong acidity. Microwave radiation is a robust technology that can quickly and efficiently prepare uniform and controllable zeolites that enable remarkable functions. We first review the current research progress in, and the fabrication of, zeolites using microwave technologies, and the related application. After a brief introduction to microwave theory and modification of zeolites, the discussion focuses on the five main microwave technologies for the synthesis of zeolites, that include microwave irradiation, microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis, microwave assisted aging synthesis, microwave assisted ionothermal synthesis, and other microwave related methods. Some critical applications such as catalysis (NOx reduction, CO2 reduction, and Fenton), gas sensing and CO2 capture, and biomedicine are selected and discussed in detail. Finally, a summary and perspectives on research that may lead to the future development of this blossoming field.

Abstract:Due to excellent performance properties such as strong activity and high selectivity, single-atom catalysts have been widely used in various catalytic reactions. Exploring the application of single-atom catalysts and elucidating their reaction mechanism has become a hot area of research. This article first introduces the structure and characteristics of single-atom catalysts, and then reviews recent preparation methods, characterization techniques, and applications of single-atom catalysts, including their application potential in electrochemistry and photocatalytic reactions. Finally, application prospects and future development directions of single-atom catalysts are outlined.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy, Ahead of Print. This study aims to develop a high-performance Pt/C catalyst for the cathode and anode parts of a modified Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell in nitrogen and argon gases at different microwave radiation powers. The pure and modified forms of the synthesized Pt/C catalysts were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The XRD results revealed that the crystal structure of the modified Pt/C catalyst was perfect and that the particle size of the catalytic material grew significantly as a consequence of the modification. Furthermore, the durability of PEM fuel cell electrocatalysts was investigated using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique. The experimental results indicated that microwave radiation had a significant effect on the particle size of the Pt/C catalyst. Additionally, the modified Pt/C catalyst exhibited a decreased activation potential loss and increased the cathode and anode power density values by 34% and 47%, respectively, compared to the Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract:The marriage of catalyst nanoparticles and mesoporous supports brings exciting new opportunities in the field of catalysis, which provides the ability to create advanced nanoporous catalysts for a wide range of catalytic processes. It has been found that not only the features of mesoporous supports, such as, surface areas, mesostructures, and pore sizes, are critical for the catalytic performances, but also the unique properties of catalyst nanoparticles, including dispersion, particle size, and loading amount, play critical roles in determining catalytic performance. Those aspects have been discussed partly in previous reviews, but a comprehensive overview on the basic design principles and synthetic methods for the marriage of catalyst nanoparticles and mesoporous supports is still lacking. In this review, the recent progresses in the fabrication of advanced catalysts by incorporation of catalyst nanoparticles into mesoporous supports are summarized. First, the synthetic strategies for the controllable synthesis are reviewed. At the same time, the corresponding chemical‐/physically properties of the resultant supported mesoporous catalysts are highlighted. After that, the catalytic performances of the resultant mesoporous catalysts in the thermal catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis are discussed. Moreover, the research challenges and perspectives in this field are assessed. Abstract:Application of microwave energy for materials processing is emerging as an innovative technology with many advantages over the conventional processing, and the rapid progress in this field suggests that microwave material processing (e.g., microwave and microwave-hydrothermal process) will play an outstanding role in the broad field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This review article gives an up-to-date overview of the current microscopical and physical characterization of the products synthesized by microwave and microwave-hydrothermal process, particularly for oxide nanomaterials because they are indispensable for nanotechnological innovations due to their combinations of infinite variety of structural motifs and properties with manifold morphological features. Basic principles, advantages, and limitations of microwave and microwave-hydrothermal processes are first introduced, and then their recent applications in the synthesis of different classes of functional materials especially for oxide nanomaterials are critically reviewed. Next, the recent progress on the structural and physical characterizations is summarized and discussed. Finally, prospects for future researches within this field are elaborated.

Abstract:With the continuous development of catalytic processes in chemistry, biology, organic synthesis, energy generation and many other fields, the design of catalysts with novel properties has become a new paradigm in both science and industry. Nonthermal plasma has aroused extensive interest in the synthesis and modification of catalysts. An increasing number of researchers are using plasma for the modification of target catalysts, such as modifying the dispersion of active sites, regulating electronic properties, enhancing metal-support interactions, and changing the morphology. Plasma provides an alternative choice for catalysts in the modification process of oxidation, reduction, etching, coating, and doping and is especially helpful for unfavourable thermodynamic processes or heat-sensitive reactions. This review focuses on the following points: (i) the fundamentals behind the nonthermal plasma modification of catalysts; (ii) the latest research progress on the application of plasma modified catalysts; and (iii) main challenges in the field and a vision for future development.

Abstract:Alumina materials, as one of the cornerstones of the modern chemical industry, possess physical and chemical properties that include excellent mechanical strength and structure stability, which also make them highly suitable as catalyst supports. Alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts with the advantages of exceptional catalytic performance, flexible regulated surface metal/acid sites, and good regeneration ability have been widely used in many traditional chemical industry fields and have also shown great application prospects in emerging fields. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in alumina and its supported Pd-based catalysts. Specifically, the synthesis strategies, morphology transformation mechanisms, and structural properties of alumina with various morphologies are comprehensively summarized and discussed in-depth. Then, the preparation approaches of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts (impregnation, precipitation, and other emerging methods), as well as the metal-support interactions (MSIs), are revisited. Moreover, Some promising applications have been chosen as representative reactions in fine chemicals, environmental purification, and sustainable development fields to highlight the universal functionality of the alumina-supported Pd-based catalysts. The role of the Pd species, alumina support, promoters, and metal-support interactions in the enhancement of catalytic performance are also discussed. Finally, some challenges and upcoming opportunities in the academic and industrial application of the alumina and its supported Pd-based are presented and put forward.

Abstract:γ-alumina has been used most widely in the area of alumina catalyst carrier.In the paper,the application and the preparation technology of active alumina catalyst carrier were reviewed.Furthermore,the active alumina was modified by improving the method of preparation,adding agents and choosing the right precursor.Catalyst carriers including γ-alumina with larger specific surface area,suitable pore size distribution,excellent thermal stability was developed.
