Abstract:This paper investigates the packet loss probabilities of several alternative input-buffered and output-buffered switch designs with finite amounts of buffer space. The effects of bursty traffic, modeled by geometrically distributed active and idle periods, are explored. Methods for improving switch performance are classified, and their effectiveness for dealing with bursty traffic discussed. This work indicates that bursty traffic can degrade switch performance significantly and that it is difficult to alleviate the performance degradation by merely restricting the offered traffic load. Unless buffers are shared, or very large buffers provided, strategies that improve throughput under uniform random traffic are not very effective under bursty traffic. For input-buffered switches, our investigation suggests that the specific contention resolution scheme we use is a more important performance factor under bursty traffic than it is under uniform random traffic. In addition, many qualitative results true for uniform random traffic are not true for bursty traffic. The work also reveals several interesting, and perhaps unexpected, results: 1) output queueing may have higher loss probabilities than input queueing under bursty traffic; 2) speeding up the switch operation could result in worse performance than having several output ports per output address under bursty traffic; and 3) if buffers are not shared in a fair manner, sharing buffers could make performance worse than not sharing buffers at high traffic loads. Simulation results and intuitive explanations supporting the above observations are presented.< >
Analyzing the Impact of Buffer Capacity on Crosspoint-Queued Switch Performance.

Abstract:We use both theoretical analysis and simulations to study the impact of crosspoint-queued (CQ) buffer size on CQ switch throughput and delay performance under different traffic models, input loads, and scheduling algorithms. In this paper, we present the following. 1) We prove the stability of CQ switch using any work-conserving scheduling algorithm. 2) We present an exact closed-form formula for the CQ switch throughput and a non-closed-form but convergent formula for its delay using static non-work-conserving random scheduling algorithms with any given buffer size under independent Bernoulli traffic. 3) We show that the above results can serve as a conservative guide on deciding the required buffer size in pure CQ switches using work-conserving algorithms such as the random scheduling, under independent Bernoulli traffic. 4) Furthermore, our simulation results under real-trace traffic show that simple round-robin and random work-conserving algorithms can achieve quite good throughput and delay performance with a feasible crosspoint buffer size. Our work reveals the impact of buffer size on the CQ switch performance and provides a theoretical guide on designing the buffer size in pure CQ switch, which is an important step toward building ultra-highspeed switch fabrics.

Abstract:The maximum throughput of an N/spl times/N nonblocking packet switch with input queues and two priority classes is analyzed. Packets are of fixed length and the switch operation is slotted. Packets of both priority classes are queued when waiting for service. High-priority packets preempt low-priority ones and move ahead of all low-priority packets waiting in the queue. A new method of analysis is employed. The calculated results of the maximum throughput obtained are close to the simulation results. >

Abstract:Buffers are essential components of any packet switch for resolving contentions among arriving packets. Currently, optical buffers are composed of fiber delay lines (FDL), whose blocking and delay behavior differ drastically from that of conventional RAM at least two-fold: 1) only multiples of discrete time delays can be offered to arriving packets; 2) a packet must be dropped if the maximum delay provided by optical buffer is not sufficient to avoid contention, this property is called balking. As a result, optical buffers only have finite time resolution, which may lead to excess load and prolong the packet delay. In this paper, a novel queueing model of optical buffer is proposed, and the closed-form expressions of blocking probability and mean delay are derived to explore the tradeoff between buffer performance and system parameters, such as the length of the optical buffer, the time granularity of FDLs, and to evaluate the overall impact of packet length distribution on the buffer performance.

Abstract:There are some drawbacks in ATM switch unifying buffer: complicated structure, lack of expansibility and difficulties in ensuring to ensure high throughput. With distributed buffers, Banyan ATM switch structured by 2×2 switch elements is a convenient model to avoid the above disadvantages. This paper analyzes the maximum throughput, cell lost ratio, average delay time of 2×2 ATM switch element by output queuing or middle queuing, and studies the performance of Banyan ATM switch structured by 2×2 switch elements.

Abstract:A general model is made to analyze switching throughput of traffic manager in core routers. By designing a real traffic manager that uses the OC-48c interface, the whole system is analyzed and it is pointed out that at least four HSSLs should be employed per CSIX interface when using Vitesse’s GigaStream switch chipset. Meanwhile, at the CSIX interface, the CFrame should be constructed according to the actual size of the last cell of each IP packet. The above principles can guarantee forwarding of IP packets at line rate. A general relationship between throughput and buffering scheme of IP packets in the external memory is given, which is useful in the design of switch fabric in core routers.

Abstract:Buffered crossbar switch is becoming attractive due to its feature of distributed scheduling, which makes the scheduler more scalable than that in an un-buffered crossbar switch. However, previous researches on buffered crossbar switches mainly aimed at improving the throughput and cell delay performance, scarcely at the fairness and bandwidth guarantee. In this paper, we discuss the necessities of providing bandwidth guarantee in buffered crossbar switches, and propose a novel RR_MCF algorithm. RR_MCF uses a simple round robin policy at input scheduling, and a most credit first policy at output scheduling. By given a predetermined reserved bandwidth matrix, simulations show RR_MCF could provide good bandwidth guarantee for each flow, even with the presence of ill-behaved flows.

Abstract:Output queuing is well known for its ability to provide Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees. Unfortunately, the high-speed memory requirements of output queued (OQ) switch limit its use for large capacity switching architecture. A lot of work in literature has investigated how to emulate OQ switch with other switch architectures. A novel approach is constructing switches with buffered crossbars. However, most of the presented schemes still need a mild speedup which will incur significant cost for high speed network application. This paper investigates how to build a buffered crossbar switch to emulate OQ switch with no speedup. We first present a 2-dimensional buffered crossbar as a switch fabric and prove that a combined input-crosspoint-output queued (CICOQ) switch with such a fabric can emulate a restrict PIFO-OQ switch with no speedup. Then, we present a pretreatment mechanism used in scheduling input queues. With such a pretreatment mechanism, the CICOQ switch is proved to be able to emulate a general PIFO-OQ switch with no speedup. All scheduling algorithms used in proving OQ emulation are distributed, hence are practical. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Scalability considerations drive the evolution of switch design from output queueing to input queueing and further to combined input and crosspoint queueing (CICQ). However, CICQ switches with credit-based flow control face new challenges of scalability and predictability. In this paper, we propose a novel approach of rate-based smoothed switching, and design a CICQ switch called the smoothed buffered crossbar or sBUX. First, the concept of smoothness is developed from two complementary perspectives of covering and spacing, which, commonly known as fairness and jitter, are unified in the same model. Second, a smoothed multiplexer sMUX is designed that allocates bandwidth among competing flows sharing a link and guarantees almost ideal smoothness for each flow. Third, the buffered crossbar sBUX is designed that uses the scheduler sMUX at each input and output, and a two-cell buffer at each crosspoint. It is proved that sBUX guarantees 100% throughput for real-time services and almost ideal smoothness for each flow. Fourth, an on-line bandwidth regulator is designed that periodically estimates bandwidth demand and generates admissible allocations, which enables sBUX to support best-effort services. Simulation shows almost 100% throughput and multi-microsecond average delay. In particular, neither credit-based flow control or speed-up is used, and arbitrary fabric-internal latency is allowed between line cards and the switch core, simplifying the switch implementation.

Abstract:A rate-based switch fabric called smoothed buffer crossbar has been proposed in our recent work. It can provide 100% rate-guaranteed service with only a two-cell buffer at each crosspoint, and can also support best-effort service with an additional bandwidth regulator. However, the widely used max-flow model for bandwidth regulation is neither scalable nor of 100% throughput. In order to evaluate the performance of bandwidth regulator, we first introduce the 100% ideal throughput measurement in this paper. Then we prove that the total arrival average (TAA) algorithm has got this property, which does not happen in the max-flow allocation. Then an O(N) algorithm called proportion scaling allocation (PSA) is presented. Simulations reveal that PSA can deliver nearly 100% throughput even in a frequently changing traffic pattern. As a comparison, both theoretical and experimental evidences are given to show the inefficiency of the max-flow model.

Abstract:Scalability considerations drive the switch fabric design to evolve from output queueing to input queueing and further to combined input and crosspoint queueing (CICQ). However, few CICQ switches are known with guaranteed quality of service, and credit-based flow control induces a scalability bottleneck. In this paper, we propose a novel CICQ switch called the smoothed buffered crossbar or sBUX, based on a new design objective of smoothness and on a new rate-based flow control scheme called the smoothed multiplexer or sMUX. It is proved that with a buffer of just four cells at each crosspoint, sBUX can utilize 100% of the switch capacity to provide deterministic guarantees of bandwidth and fairness, delay and jitter bounds for each flow. In particular, neither credit-based flow control nor speedup is used, and arbitrary fabric-internal latency is allowed between line cards and the switch core.

Abstract:This chapter focuses on the performance analysis of some simple switch designs. From the analysis, we shall see that head-of-line (HOL) blocking as well as output contention among packets may severely limit the switch throughput. The chapter presents several fundamental switch design principles to alleviate these problems and achieve performance improvement. It analyzes the delay and throughput performance of some simple switch designs with an internally nonblocking structure. The chapter illustrates each switch design principle using specific implementations. It shows that input-buffered switch with single first-in-first-out (FIFO) queues, on the contrary, is good for its simplicity but is constrained by its low throughput of 58.6%. Output capacity expansion refers to a class of design strategies that alleviate the contention problem by allowing more than one packet to reach the same output in the same time slot. QPS-r: A Cost-Effective Crossbar Scheduling Algorithm and Its Stability and Delay Analysis

Abstract:In an input-queued switch, a crossbar schedule, or a matching between the input ports and the output ports needs to be computed in each switching cycle, or time slot. Designing switching algorithms with very low computational complexity, that lead to high throughput and small delay is a challenging problem. There appears to be a fundamental tradeoff between the computational complexity of the switching algorithm and the resultants throughput and delay. Parallel maximal matching algorithms (adapted for switching) appear to have stricken a sweet spot in this tradeoff, and prior work has shown the following performance guarantees. Using maximal matchings in every time slot results in at least 50% switch throughput and order-optimal (i.e., independent of the switch size N) average delay bounds for various traffic arrival processes. On the other hand, their computational complexity can be as low as $O(log^2N)$ per port/processor, which is much lower than those of the algorithms such as maximum weighted matching which ensures better throughput performance. In this work, we propose QPS-r, a parallel iterative switching algorithm that has the lowest possible computational complexity: O(1) per port. Using Lyapunov stability analysis, we show that the throughput and delay performance is identical to that of maximal matching algorithm. Although QPS-r builds upon an existing technique called Queue-Proportional Sampling (QPS), in this paper, we provide analytical guarantees on its throughput and delay under i.i.d. traffic as well as a Markovian traffic model which can model many realistic traffic patterns. We also demonstrate that QPS-3 (running 3 iterations) has comparable empirical throughput and delay performances as iSLIP (running $log_2 N$ iterations), a refined and optimized representative maximal matching algorithm adapted for switching.
Crossbar-based Scheduling Algorithm for Burst Traffic

Abstract:For input-queued scheduling, the iSLIP (iterative SLIP) algorithm provides high throughput and is easily implemented. However, with burst arrivals, its average input latency increases dramatically and many cells may be dropped as the input buffer overflows. A scheduling algorithm called iTFF (iterative "time to leave" and "full or not" first) was developed to reduce the cell loss rate without increasing the average input latency, which has better performance than iSLIP with burst traffic conditions. Simulation results show that the iTFF algorithm exponentially reduces the cell loss rate and yet maintains low average input latency. Moreover, iTFF can be implemented in hardware to achieve high speed.
Multiple-threshold Based Scheduling Algorithm for High Performance Input Queued Switches

Abstract:Input queued switching architectures has become attractive for implementing high performance switches. Some maximal matching algorithms, e.g. PIM, iSLIP, are easily implemented in hardware, hence attract more attention in designing of the practical router. However, they usually need multiple iterations to achieve satisfying performance. In this paper, we propose a multiple-threshold based round robin matching algorithm (MTRRM) for high performance input queued crossbar switch scheduling. In MTRRM, when an input and an output are matched, the matching might be kept for more than one time slot. Simulation results show that our scheme can strongly reduce the average cell delay and increase the throughput under non-uniform traffic. MTRRM achieves quite good performance with single iteration and this promises us that it is more suitable for switch with high line rate or large number of ports.

Abstract:Multicast traffic exhibits an increasing proportion of traffic on the Internet. In order to support multicast scheduling, most of the presented multicast scheduling schemes are originated from traditional scheduling schemes based on crossbar switches. Due to the traffic expansion of multicast replication, they are still unpractical and unscalable. In this paper, we propose a low-cost multicast scheduling (LCMS) scheme based on buffered crossbar switches. In this scheme, both multicast and unicast traffic can be simultaneously supported in a single buffered crossbar fabric without any additional switch module. Furthermore, LCMS is a distributed scheme, the arbitrations of it can be implemented on each input and each output independently and in parallel, hence is more practical and scalable. The simulation results also verify a good performance of the LCMS scheme.

Abstract:Crossbar switches frequently function as the internal switching fabric of high-performance network switches and routers. It is feasible to use currently available CMOS technology to build a small crossbar switch with extremely high aggregate bandwidth in excess of 1 terabit per second. Such a switch could serve as a core for an ATM switch or an Internet router. However, for fairness and high utilization, a crossbar needs an intelligent, centralized scheduler. In this article, the authors review the research of the switch fabric and scheduling algorithms for crossbar switch, and analyze these algorithms in detail. A summary of the technologies considered in the literatures is presented. Research directions and open problems in this area are also discussed.

Abstract:In order to support multiple priority levels, separate queues per priority are required at each crosspoint, much more memories and many schedulers are needed in a buffered crossbar, which are costly and inefficient. According to effectively support multiple priorities, this paper presents a virtual-priority-output queueing (VPOQ) architecture, based on a buffered crossbar, and proposes a novel scheduling mechanism by definition of dual priority. At each input port of a buffered crossbar, a parallel scheduling on priority queues and a round robin scheduling algorithm, both based on dual priority, are put forward. Schedulers at crosspoints function in a round robin manner. Compared with current scheduling algorithms supporting multiple priorities in a buffered crossbar, our project need not per priority queueing at per crosspoint, can not only avoid complicated scheduling in the fabric but also provide flow isolation and protection, and the implementation is relatively simple. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the delay property of our scheme, indicating that our scheme can match a buffered crossbar with per priority queueing at per crosspoint
