An Empirical Analysis on Depositors' Market Discipline to China's Commercial Banks

Abstract:With the panel data of several financial indicators,during 1997 -2008,of 58 commercial banks in China and the macroeconomic data,authors are trying to find whether depositors are care about the operation situation of commercial banks in consideration of the relationship between the growth ratio of deposits and fundamental banking indicators.The empirical results suggest that the growth ratio of total deposits in banks be dramatically affected by the macroeconomic situation,monetary policy,capital adequacy,asset quality,and management,which is consistent with the market discipline theories.The paper also builds some regression models,whose dependent variables are the customer deposit and inner-bank deposit.We find that the behavior of customer depositor plays a main role in the market discipline,and that the growth ratio of inner-bank deposit could not be an effective indicator for customer depositors to make decisions.
