Abstract:Pfiesteria piscicida and Pfiesteria shumwayae have been found to be common dinoflagellates in estuary waters responsible for massive fish deaths and associated human illnesses in the southeastern United States in recent years. These dinoflagellates had been considered to have a complex life cycle of 24 stages including flagellate zoospores, cysts, and amoeboid stages until it was reported recently that no evidence for amoeboid stages is available and that a much more simplified life cycle composing sexual and asexual stages exists. These dinoflagellates can produce potent exotoxin which have been considered to be responsible for fish death. However, till now,Pfiesteria toxins have never been screened and purified.some researchers insist that P.shumwayae kills fish only through direct contact and phagolysis without necessarily involving in the production of one or more toxins.Traditional method(standardized fish bioassay,SFB) has been used to detect these dinoflagellates. In recent years, molecular detection techniques have also been developed for the detection.
