Abstract:The distribution of emission line redsbifts for quasars has been studied by means of a statistical analysis of the power spectrum. It has been demonstrated that the distribution of all the quasars listed in the new catalogue of Hewitt and Burbidge have, at 99% confidence level, a periodic component with respect to the argument x defined as where z is the redshift of quasars and q_0 the deceleration parameter. This periodicity may be the result of density wave (sound) perturbations occurring just before the recombination epoch of the big bang cosmology. In standard cosmology the Jeans mass is dramatically changed during the recombination epoch. Before the start of recombination, the Jeans mass is correspondingly large, about a million or so times larger than the mass of galaxies. After recombination, the Jeans mass drops by a factor of about 10~(12) to one-millionth of the mass of galaxies. As a result the following process is possible: some sound-like fluctuations with large wavelengths occurring before recombination become the of Jeans instability after recombination. The periodic structure of the can, then, be preserved and amplified by the clustering in successive times. If the formation of quasars is correlated with density inhomogeneity, the existence of periodic components in the quasar redshifts is a natural outcome. Indeed, it can be shown that in the pressureless Friedmann model the periodicity is with respect to argument x given in the Eq. (1), or the peaks in the distribution are determined by x(z_n,q_o)=An+B where A denotes the wavelength of the periodicity, B the initial phase, and n equals a positive integer. The main consequences of this model have been verified through the following tests: 1. According to cosmological principle, it is impossible that the earth occupies a preferred position near the centre of a spherical wave perturbation. The initial phases. of waves propagating to the earth from different directions are random. The periodicity should be smeared by superposition of such density wave fluctuations upon the homogeneous component. On the other hand, a density perturbation from a certain direction can avoid the effect of random phases; one expects, therefore, that the periodicity would be more remarkable for a set of quasars located near a certain position of the sky than that for quasars in all the sky. This point has been varified by the power spectrum of a sample by Savage and Bolton. 2. Before recombination the sound fluctuations were being dissipated due to the. interaction between matter and radiation. Considering the effects of viscosity and thermal conductivity the dissipations of primeval sounds are in proportion to the factor exp (-(λ_c/λ)~2), in which λ_c is a characteristic length and λ is the wavelength of sound. This means the wavelength is longer, the dissipation lower. The strongest seed effect is, thus given by the sound perturbation with largest allowed wavelength just before recombination. From this we can estimate the length of period A as A0.220(H_0/100)(T_0/2.7)~2 where H_0 is the Hubble constant in km/sec·Mpe, and T_0 the cosmic temperature at present. This result is in accord, approximately, with the values A=0.205 given by power spectra. 3. The deceleration parameter q_0 may be determined by the remarkableness of the periodicity, because x is a function of q_0. From this we find q_0 larger than 0.5. It is in accord with the conclusion obtained recently from the massive neutrinos and redshift relations of various quasar subsets.
