Abstract:Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of virus in acute viral respiratory infection in children. Methods The nasopharyngeal swabs from children with acute respiratory infection selected from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College during Sep.2006 to Aug.2009 were collected, and the presence of respiratory syncytial virus(RSV),human rhinovirus(HRV),in-fluenza virus type A(fluA),influenza viruses type B(fluB),human metapneumovirus(HMPV),adenovirus(ADV),parainfluenza virus(PIV)and human coronaviridae(HCoV)were examined with multiple reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and the epidemiological characteristics of these viral infections were analyzed, including the season, and the year and age distribution. Results Seven hundred and sixty-three nasopharyngeal swabs were collected, the positive rate of virus detection was 55.31%(422/763 cases).RSV was the most common virus(18.5%),its infection rate was higher in spring(25.2%,χ2=11.147,P=0.001),and its infection rate was decreasing each year(χ2=17.593,28.215,Pa=0.000).The infection rate of HRV came next(14.8%),its infection rate was higher in autumn(χ2=6.349,P=0.012).fluA had the highest infection rate in summer, and more children were infected with fluA in the past 2 years, especially during Sep.2007 to Aug.2008(χ2=4.082,P=0.028).The infection rate of HMPV was higher in autumn(11.11%,χ2=6.666,P=0.010),but was lower in summer(3.42%,χ2=8.015,P=0.005).The infection rate of fluB was lower in infants and young children(infants:1.61%,χ2=4.831,P=0.028;young children:6.22%,χ2=3.977,P=0.046),while the infection rate was higher in school-aged children(17.01%,χ2=13.500,P=0.000).Conclusions The infection rate of RSV was the highest in acute respiratory infection in children in Guangzhou, and the epidemic is associated with varying seasons. The infection rate of fluB increases with age.
