Abstract:It has been proven by the history of higher education(HE) that changes in HE models always take place in accordance with changes of functions of universities.Chinese researchers on HE have proposed some new conceptions of HE functions,but they find it difficult to justify their new perspectives.This paper argues that this results from failure to identify the interactions between changes of functions of universities and changes of HE models.Changes of functions of universities have proved that the three traditional functions of teaching,research and social service are no longer able to meet the needs arising from new trends of HE in contemporary society and therefore the functions of "transformation of knowledge","promotion of employment" and "life-long education" must be added as new functions.These three new functions are extensions of the traditional functions.They not only embrace the latest trend of HE development but are also conducive to the scientific positioning and structural adjustment of China's HE,thereby promoting the construction of HE systems with Chinese characteristics.

Abstract:Originating from a concern on the cultural characteristics of academic activities,studies on functions of the culture of university academic disciplines have attracted more and more attention and accordingly varied theories have been proposed by the academia such as unitary function theory,triple function theory,quadruple function theory and quintuple function theory.However,problems do exist in that the major evidence for proposing functions of the culture of university academic disciplines calls for clarification,some of the functions require further identification and the interrelationships of the diverse functions need to be carefully tackled as well.Based on a comprehensive analysis of the related studies,this paper,with an aim to paving the way for further studies on the culture and functions of university academic disciplines,comes up with the new quintuple functions—boundary,agglomeration,stipulation,knowledge production and talent cultivation,among which talent cultivation is the core function.

Abstract:In the intellectual and information society, humanities and the idea of a modern university are inextricably linked. A university is supposed to assume the role of inheriting cultural tradition and criticizing the political, cultural and other aspects of society. To train a student is to promote his self-knowledge, self-perfection, and self-development. This is called "maturity" education, which is synonymous with broad-base education. It is primary, whereas specialized education is secondary. People may be selective in their acceptance of a certain culture, minor or mainstream, but a university must be receptive of different cultures and turn itself into a free-thinking land endowed with varied spiritual resources.

Abstract:The formative quality of students and the vocational trend of university education show that the current society seems to pay more attention to students'skills instead of their aftereffect and creativity, from which we ought to realize that not only universities must face the future, but also lead the development of the society, as they are the production of social division and on the top of education system. Leading the future need new personality, and we have to probe the truth in order to cultivate new personality. Universities thus have no way to reach the Dao except inquiry, cultivating students and leading the future. Inquiry here differentiates universities and the technical secondary schools, and cultivating students is the core differences between universities and other social organizations. Finally, we can say that leading the future is the embodiment of the principles of "education should face the future",and the embodiment of universities'critical function, and thus the soul of a university,the modernization and return of university functions.

Abstract:Affected by the economic competition and global ranking and evaluation system,research function has begun to dominate the teaching and service,so higher education is fully implicated as an institution looked upon as a producer of innovation.The identity of the university as a public welfare and teaching institution has been subjected to questioning.Jung Cheol Shin,an associate professor at Seoul National University,has thought that it is the complexities of the university's multi-functional organization that has caused all of those problems.Besides,he has pointed out that the multi-level and multi-functional systems can cope with the complexities effectively,and has stressed that the university should be redesigned as an institution of teaching rather than a tool of generating resource.This thesis analyzed its basic connotation,construction basis and implementation premise.It is expected that the multi-level and multi-functional systems may be meaningful for us to deepen comprehensively the reform of Chinese higher education in the future.
