Abstract:Landfills are the most popular means of disposing of construction solid waste owing to the low-cost, large treatment volume and strong adaptability. However, landfill collapses and landslides are common, posing a risk to lives and property. A catastrophic landslide, not triggered by heavy rainfall or earthquakes, occurred on December 20, 2015, at Hongao landfill in Guangming New district of Shenzhen, China. The collapsed waste soil flowed 1100 m down a slope with an elevation difference of 100 m. This catastrophic landslide is typical of long-runout disasters with high mobility, which result in great loss to life and property. In this paper, we focused on reproducing the flow processes and simulating the arriving area of the landslide at Hongao landfill using a full three-dimensional (3D) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. A series of undrained ring shear tests were conducted to determine the viscosity coefficient for the numerical simulation. The calculated geometry of the landslide using the full 3D SPH method agreed well with the field data. Hence, the combination of ring shear tests and SPH method can be widely used to predict the dynamic behavior of potential landslides in landfills, to reduce or prevent similar disasters.

Abstract:The combination of dense urban development, hilly terrain, and intense seasonal rainfall has caused acute landslide problems in Hong Kong, which are manifested by a death toll of over 470 people since the late 1940s. Tackling landslide problems in an urban setting, in particular under the effect of climate change, calls for a development and implementation of a holistic risk management strategy. It entails the use of engineering and non-engineering approaches, involving policy, legislative, administrative, innovation, technical, educational, community-based, and emergency-preparedness provisions. In this paper, these two approaches are showcased by the slope safety system that has been developed and promulgated in managing landslide risk for building Hong Kong as a world-class smart city.

Abstract:A large number of deep cuts are formed during the construction of expressways in mountainous areas. Inadequate interpretation of ground conditions is a major contributing factor to the failure of cut slopes. This study focuses on the Hongyan landslide along the S26 expressway. Due to lack of an adequate pre-construction investigation, a landslide was triggered by small-scale excavation at the toe part of the slope. The potential slip surface was incorrectly located; consequently, two rows of stabilizing piles were not long enough to reach stable rocks. To overcome the mistake, two additional rows of piles were installed. During construction, both slope deformation and the stress of reinforced bars in piles were monitored for safety considerations. A Verhulst model-based failure forecast was also utilized to insure the stability of the slope during remedial works. Reviewing this landslide reveals a number of lessons. First, sufficient geological investigation and careful interpretation of ground conditions are mandatory prior to the design of a cut slope. Second, systematic field monitoring is strongly recommended, especially when the geology of the slope is complex and it is difficult to determine failure patterns. Third, the failure forecast can serve as a supplementary measure to insure the safety of workers and slopes. Last, it always takes some time for stabilizing piles to mobilize.

Abstract:Rockfall is one kind of important geohazard. Due to its complexity of trajectory, it is difficult for treatment designing in slope engineering. This paper employs a methodology for estimating rockfall trajectory using a series.of established formulas, and then discusses the advantage and also disadvantage of existing controlling measures for rockfall mitigation. Based on site survey, calculation results and site geologic conditions, various protective structures such as retaining walls, safety net system and vegetation or plants, are suggested to mitigate and control the rockfall hazards comprehensively, which illustrates great advantages in technology, economics and environmental protection in a case study of rockfall hazard treatment. The idea and methodology presented herein is referential for similar slope problems.

Abstract:Rainfall-induced landslides are of frequent occurrence in the south of China. One of the most effective methods to stabilize landslides is to lower the groundwater table by installing horizontal drain. A shallow landslide caused by typhoon Morakot happened along Shangyu - Sanmen Expressway in Zhejiang. Horizontal drains were installed and served as an important part of the slope stabilization scheme. The relationship among rainfall intensity, groundwater level, and slope stability was indicated by field monitoring data. Using software GeoStudio, the stability states of the original slope under rainfall are simulated, based on Fredlund’s Unsaturated Soil Strength Theory. After the rain ceases, the draining processes of the original slope and the slope with horizontal drains are compared. It is obvious that the factor of safety recovers rapidly in the slope with drains. The simulated discharge rate of drain and slope surface, and the change of groundwater table also prove the benefits of the drains, which agree well with the field monitoring data.

Abstract:Sand-sliding slope posed a main geological disaster in mountain area highway construction in west China.Due to ambiguity of formative mechanism of sand-sliding slope,countermeasure employed at present could not control the disaster,and some measures even aggravate destruction of slope.By means of investigation and study of typical sand-sliding slope along Sichuan-Tibet Highway,explained growth with time was constitutive feature of sand-sliding slope,and analyzed its disaster formative mechanism.Finally,based on economic and geological condition of west China,some proper control countermeasures were suggested against disaster of sand-sliding slope.
Back-Analyses of Landfill Instability Induced by High Water Level: Case Study of Shenzhen Landfill

Abstract:In June 2008, the Shenzhen landfill slope failed. This case is used as an example to study the deformation characteristics and failure mode of a slope induced by high water levels. An integrated monitoring system, including water level gauges, electronic total stations, and inclinometers, was used to monitor the slope failure process. The field measurements suggest that the landfill landslide was caused by a deep slip along the weak interface of the composite liner system at the base of the landfill. The high water level is considered to be the main factor that caused this failure. To calculate the relative interface shear displacements in the geosynthetic multilayer liner system, a series of numerical direct shear tests were carried out. Based on the numerical results, the composite lining system simplified and the centrifuge modeling technique was used to quantitatively evaluate the effect of water levels on landfill instability.

Abstract:Given insufficient geological investigation and inadequate interpretation of geological settings, remedial works for localized cut slope collapses may induce large-scale failures and cause remarkable damage, as well as economical loss. A number of recent reports have addressed individual large-scale failures due to inappropriate cutting, but the systematic classification of failure patterns has received less attention. In this study, a re-profiling triggered landslide is described in detail. The deep slip surface is located by field measurements; then, the stability of the slope before and after cutting is assessed with the limit equilibrium method. Three types of slopes prone to deep-seated failures are introduced: the loose deposits type, the ancient landslide type, and the deep adverse discontinuities type. The mechanism of each failure pattern is illustrated with a case study. The stability analyses indicate that inappropriate slope profiling may greatly reduce the factor of safety (FS) of a slope. Recommendations are given for mitigating the deep-seated landslide induced by inappropriate cutting, and a case history of successful measures is presented.

Abstract:Most landslides are induced by groundwater activity; and the stability of landslide is directly related to the dynamical variation of groundwater. Due to the slope medium heterogeneity and the slope deformation discontinuity, it is a complex process for the groundwater table variation and the change of seepage system when landslides happen. The groundwater pipe seepage system is often developed in pebbly clay slopes in the long-term geological processes. It is important to prevent groundwater table rising and to keep the slope stability. According to the study on the landslide No.6 along Shangyu-Sanmen Highway, it is found that the groundwater seepage is inhomogeneous; and it flows tubularly generally. When the slope deforms and failure happens, the pipe seepage system will be damaged due to the discontinuity deformation of the slope, which causes the groundwater table to rise fast, even to overflow the ground surface. Therefore, the slope stability decreases and the failure of the slope speeds up. The underground drainage tunnel can stop the groundwater table rising effectively; especially, it can prevent the accumulation of the prior period precipitation in slope. So it is an effective engineering measure for landslide control and is worth to be applied.

Abstract:Local collapse or even overall movement may occur due to excavation at the slope toe, especially when there is a weak interlayer in the stratum. This process frequently produces many tension cracks on the slope surface, increases the sensitivity of groundwater to rainfall and thus promotes the development of landslide. The Houpucun landslide, which is located in Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province of China, is a typical case in which the weak interlayer and the tension crack play an important role in triggering the slope instability. In this study, the deformation process and the hydraulic characteristics of this landslide were analyzed based on monitoring of the slope displacement, rainfall and hydraulic head. The results show that the slope deformation has a strong correlation with rainfall and groundwater table. The large number of cracks on the slope surface provide favorable conditions for the infiltration of rainfall and that the hydraulic head rise rapidly under the action of rainfall. Because the mechanical strength of the weak interlayer greatly decreases when saturated, the slope is prone to failure under rainfall. Numerical simulations were carried out to compare the stability of the slope before and after rainfall. The results show that the factor of safety of the slope is close to one once the weak interlayer is immersed by groundwater. A new siphon drainage technique was employed to control the groundwater table and improve the stability of the slope, which has proven to be a practicable and efficient countermeasure for the case in hand.

Abstract:Due to the uncertainty in soil landslide failure mechanisms, lack of early warning systems for soil landslides and adoption of improper excavation configurations, soil landslides accidents triggered by highway excavation in Chinese mountainous areas generally require expensive remedial measures. This paper describes a soil landslide associated with excavation through integrating field reconnaissance and finite element method simulation. According to the obtained results, the adoption of toe excavation and the presence of a silty clay layer are the two main factors contributing to the failure of the soil landslide, and a strong negative correction was observed between the toe excavation and surface displacement and the safety factor of the investigated cut slope; therefore, a four-level early warning system for this excavation-induced soil landslide was established by employing toe excavation and surface displacement thresholds as the warning indicators. Lastly, a preferable excavation configuration was proposed to facilitate excavation designs in similar landslide-prone areas.
Mechanisms of Rainfall-Induced Landslides in Hong Kong

Abstract:Landslides in residual soils and fill slopes formed by loosely compacted completely decomposed granite (CDG) in Hong Kong occur mostly during intensive tropical rainstorms. In-situ hydrologic response to rainstorms indicates that suction is reduced by the infiltration of rainfall, which provides a triggering factor to initiate instability of a slope. Constant dead load (DL) testing of unsaturated specimens appropriately simulates stress path of rainfall-induced failure. It indicates that matric suction contributes to the dilative or contractive behavior of unsaturated soils. In anisotropically consolidated undrained (ACU) triaxial tests on saturated specimens, the soil is consistently contractive. Based on these studies, the present paper attempts to understand in-situ stress conditions leading to the initiation of rainfall-induced slope failure, and stress paths of the transformation from localized failures to debris flows. An interpretation of causative mechanisms of rainfall-induced landslides is offered, and the strength parameters of loosely compacted CDG are also obtained.

Abstract:Potential hazards arising from low-frequency large-magnitude debris flows have become apparent under the adverse impact of climate change and extreme weather. Hong Kong has systematically managed landslide risks arising from man-made slopes and natural hillsides since 1977, owing to its unique geographic location, steep terrain, deep weathering profile and post-war rapid urban development. In recent years, evaluation of potential hazards arising from low-frequency large-magnitude debris flows and their possible dire consequences has developed into a key part of the landslide mitigation effort in Hong Kong in light of the occurrence of more frequent and more severe extreme rainfall events. Valuable experience is gained in identifying potential low-frequency large-magnitude debris flow hazards, assessing their potential impacts to the public located at the densely populated foothills and developing a holistic strategy to mitigate against potentially catastrophic consequences. This paper sets out the mitigation strategy for mitigating low-frequency large-magnitude debris flows in Hong Kong and gives a case study to demonstrate the approach.
The Influence of Localized Slumping on Groundwater Seepage and Slope Stability

Abstract:Transverse cracks and localized slumps frequently occur within loose deposits slopes when the slope base is removed either from natural or manmade processes. Although the contribution of rainfall to the slope failures was intensely discussed, the influence of localized slumps on hydrogeological conditions has received less attention. Usually, loose deposits slopes are composed of soil layers with different permeability; localized slumps may cause flow paths partly blocked in the permeable layer that is adversely confined between impermeable layers. In this study, a case history of such failure, Xiaodan () landslide, is introduced in detail. The localized slump caused the pressure head in the permeable layer to increase substantially, which reduced the stability of the slope. To quantify the influence, Bernoulli equations are used to analytically study the increase of the pressure head with a hydrogeological model simplified from the slope. The factor of safety assessed by limit equilibrium methods may decrease up to 20% when the 80% of flow path is blocked. Thus, we should pay attention not only to changes of stress filed due to localized slumps but also to the influence of seepage variation on the slope stability.

Abstract:This paper describes an interesting landslide located in the mountainous area of Zhejiang Province, China, which was caused by highway construction. Due to the complex geological conditions, the failure mechanism of the landslide is particularly difficult to analyze. The soil deformations were initially judged to be shallow and partial sliding. However, engineering measures used to stabilize the sliding masses failed. By establishing a comprehensive monitoring system composed of GPS, inclinometers and groundwater level monitors, the deformation of landslide was monitored. It is found that the previous deformation mechanism assumed without the monitoring data is incorrect. On the other hand, there is a large rock ancient landslide in the site, and deformation of the soil mass was caused by the reactivation of this ancient landslide. This case study illustrates the importance to deeply analyze the geological data and the field monitoring data and to correctly understand the geological conditions.

Abstract:Catastrophic loess-mudstone landslides have long been a major concern in Northwest China due to the extreme weather and frequent earthquakes in history. To investigate the potential deformation feature and failure mode of the loess-mudstone landslide under the combined effect of rainfall and earthquake in the study area, the Zhoujiashan landslide was selected as the target and detailed field investigation, shaking table tests, as well as numerical analysis were conducted in this work. The test results and numerical simulation indicate that rainfall infiltration has limited impact on the overall stability as the infiltration depth is limited and the pore pressure variation pattern is consistent both in the shaking table test and numerical calculation. In terms of seismic response, the earthquake has obvious amplification effect with the inherent period of 0.2–0.4 s. Under the peak seismic conditions of 0.1 g and 0.3 g, deformation appears at the slope surface, but the overall slope will not be completely damaged. Under the seismic condition of 0.6 g, liquefaction occurred at the sliding surface due to the rise of the groundwater level, indicating that the slope was overall damaged. In this process, the overall failure mechanism of the slope is vibration liquefaction at the sliding surface, and the liquefaction position is in the middle of the landslide. The failure mode is summarized as shearing-liquefaction-slippage. This work is expected to contribute to the prevention and control of loess-mudstone landslides in northwest China.

Abstract:In Ganzhou City, China, a complex bedrock lithology and structure, diverse topography, frequent engineering works, and abundant rainfall generate frequent, sudden, small-scale landslides that are difficult to prevent and control. This study integrates evidence data from a field investigation of landslides with geological-engineering analogues to document the distribution and development of these geohazards in Ganzhou City. Based on the distribution of landslides across different types of bedrock and soil, we identify five lithological groups prone to slope failure: granite, metamorphics (slate and phyllite), red sedimentary layers, clastic sedimentary rocks with weak interlayers, and loose Quaternary deposits. Granite and metamorphic bedrock are the two lithologies most prone to landslides. Our analysis of the genesis and mode of slope failure suggests that most landslides in Ganzhou City originated from four modes of slope failure: scouring erosion collapse, steep slope collapse, rock sliding along a rock stratum, and wedge-shaped block sliding and caving. An in-situ model test and numerical simulations were used to explore the evolution of slope deformation and failure on the most landslide-prone lithological groups, and the accumulation of debris post-failure. This work provides a reference for the assessment of the risk from, and the management of, landslide geohazards in Ganzhou City and geologically similar regions.
