Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to assess the environmental risk of the heavymetals including Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and As tothe riverwater of Pingzhai reservoir in central Guizhou. For our research, we have collected water samples from the 14 monitoring points from the reservoir area both in dry season (April to May) and wet season (September to October). In this paper, we have measured such parameters as temperature, pH, EC and DOby using portable meters in situ, and determined the heavy metal concentrations by ICP-MS. While analyzing the spatial distribution characteristics of the water body,we were conducting the correlation analysis by using Spearman’ s rank correlation coefficient. In addition,we have done the health risk assessment for the related contamination brought about by the heavy metal exposure mainly with the model designed by USEPA. The results of our analysis and statistics have shown that all the heavy metal concentrations in the water turned to be belowthe set values of the environmental quality standards stipulated for surface water in China (GB 3838—2002). To be accurate, the heavy metal concentrations in the water of main streams around the reservoir proves to be closely correlated with the water quality of the tributaries. As to the origin of the heavy metal pollutants in the water body, it can be said that they were mainly derived from the drainage of mining production and/orthe urban sewage. The correlation parameters between Zn, Cd and Pb concentrations in the water turn to be significant, suggesting that such heavy metal pollutants are originated from the same source, with the exception that the source of As might be different with others. The potential risk caused by the non-carcinogen contaminants was much lower than that of carcinogens. The maximum indexes of the entire risk threat in dry seasons and wet seasons were about 2.47 ×10-5a-1and 2.04×10-5a-1, respectively, though it has been found that the entire health risk threats in dry seasons prove to be slightly higher than that of the wet seasons. But neither of them tends to be greater than the maximum acceptable risk (5×10-5a-1) recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Of all statistic indexes, Cr and As should be taken as the two main pollutants that threaten human health. Therefore, measures should be taken to decrease the emission of them are likely to be an effective way to reduce the health risk both to human beings and other creatures of the world .
