Abstract:In this paper, the single and combined toxicities of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons fluoranthene and copper to Phaeodactylum triconutum were studied. The results showed that exposing P. triconutum to single fluoranthene ( 0 - 0.315 μg/mL) or Cu2+ ( 0 - 1.262 μg/mL), the population growth of this alga was affected, which presented a good concentration-dependant relationship. When the concentration of fluoranthene was more than 0.079 μg/mL or the concentration of Cu2+ was more than 0.317 μg/mL in the culture media, the algal growth began to be inhibited significantly. The 72h EC50s of fluoranthene and copper to P. triconutum were obtained by regression analysis and they were about ( 0.103 ± 0.009 ) μg / mL and ( 0.531 ± 0.037 ) μg / mL respectively. In the combined toxicity test, one toxic unit ( TU ) is defined as the sum of 0.5 × EC50 ( fluoranthene ) and 0.5 × EC50 ( Copper ). Exposing P. triconutum to the mixture of fluoranthene and copper at different TUs, the 72 h EC50 was about ( 1.093 ± 0.085 ) TU, which was larger than 1 TU. Therefore, the interaction between fluoranthene and copper in their toxicity to P. triconutum was antagonistic.
