Abstract:With reference to Michael Polanyi's theory of "Personal Knowledge", this article defines Sino-Christian Theology's epistemological position and clarifies the role of belief in its knowledge construction. Polanyi argues that belief and commitment, as tacit knowledge, are the sources of every knowledge system. Based on this theory, Sino-Christian Theology is considered to be a knowledge system between religion and humanity disciplines. And thus it has two commitment frameworks: personal belief as an Intellectual Passion, and a disciplinary knowledge commitment. The former is an essential dynamic factor to all knowledge; the latter is the foundation of the knowledge validity of Sino-Christian Theology, which includes group language, tradition and the culture of community. Therefore, Sino-Christian Theology also has two epistemological dimensions: one is the expression of personal belief dwelling in religion; another is a disciplinary synthesis of humanities and religion. In these two dimensions, personal tacit knowledge is transformed into public explicit knowledge, following one and the same disciplinary knowledge commitment, and thus both ways are epistemologically valid and barely distinguishable in explicit forms. Finally, it is pointed out that the question field following the conflict between belief and reason is the prior space for epistemological innovations of Sino-Christian Theology. Other expected knowledge innovations include the renewal of the group language, the transmission of community, and the conversation of cultures.
