Abstract:The spin-1/2 XXZ model on an infinite square lattice at zero temperature has been studied and is presented here. Our methods using finite square lattices have been the exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo methods. The physical properties estimated per lattice vertex include ground-state and first-excited-state energy, staggered magnetization, and susceptibility in the parallel and perpendicular directions, spin stiffness, and spin-wave velocity. In the XXZ model range from the Ising model to the Heisenberg model our estimates of physical properties compare very well with estimates by several other methods published in several other papers. In the XXZ range between the Heisenberg and XY models there is very little in the literature to compare with our finite lattice estimates of physical properties.

Abstract:We present a universal parameter-free quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm designed to simulate arbitrary spin-$1/2$ Hamiltonians. To ensure the convergence of the Markov chain to equilibrium for every conceivable case, we devise a clear and simple automated protocol that produces QMC updates that are provably ergodic and satisfy detailed balance. We demonstrate the applicability and versatility of our method by considering several illustrative examples, including the simulation of the XY model on a triangular lattice, the toric code, and random $k$-local Hamiltonians. We have made our program code freely accessible on GitHub.

Loop Algorithm for Quantum Transverse Ising Model in a Longitudinal Field

Abstract:The quantum transverse Ising model and its extensions play a critical role in various fields, such as statistical physics, quantum magnetism, quantum simulations, and mathematical physics. Although it does not suffer from the sign problem in most cases, the corresponding quantum Monte Carlo algorithm performs inefficiently, especially at a large longitudinal field. The main hindrance is the lack of loop update method which can strongly decrease the auto-correlation between Monte Carlo steps. Here, we successfully develop a loop algorithm with a novel merge-unmerge process. It demonstrates a great advantage over the state-of-the-art algorithm when implementing it to simulate the Rydberg atom chain and Kagome qubit ice. This advanced algorithm suits many systems such as Rydberg atom arrays, trapped ions, quantum materials, and quantum annealers.

Simulation of the 1d XY model on a quantum computer

Abstract:The field of quantum computing has grown fast in recent years, both in theoretical advancements and the practical construction of quantum computers. These computers were initially proposed, among other reasons, to efficiently simulate and comprehend the complexities of quantum physics. In this paper, we present the comprehensive scheme for the exact simulation of the 1-D XY model on a quantum computer. We successfully diagonalize the proposed Hamiltonian, enabling access to the complete energy spectrum. Furthermore, we propose a novel approach to design a quantum circuit to perform exact time evolution. Among all the possibilities this opens, we compute the ground and excited state energies for the symmetric XY model with spin chains of n=4 and n=8 spins. Further, we calculate the expected value of transverse magnetization for the ground state in the transverse Ising model. Both studies allow the observation of a quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic to a paramagnetic state. Additionally, we have simulated the time evolution of the state all spins up in the transverse Ising model. The scalability and high performance of our algorithm make it an ideal candidate for benchmarking purposes, while also laying the foundation for simulating other integrable models on quantum computers.

Abstract:We study a classical model of fully-packed loops on the square lattice, which interact through attractive loop segment interactions between opposite sides of plaquettes. This study is motivated by effective models of interacting quantum matter arising in frustrated magnets or Rydberg atom arrays, for which loop degrees of freedom appear at low energy. Through a combination of Monte Carlo simulations and an effective height field theory, we find that the critical point known to occur at infinite temperature gives rise to a high-temperature critical phase with floating exponents. At lower temperature, the system transitions via a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition to a nematic phase where lattice rotation symmetry is broken. We discuss consequences for the phase diagram of the quantum loop model on the same lattice.

Abstract:Potts spin systems play a fundamental role in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory and can be studied within the spin, the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) bond or the q-flow (loop) representation. We introduce a Loop-Cluster (LC) joint model of bond-occupation variables interacting with q-flow variables and formulate an LC algorithm that is found to be in the same dynamical universality as the celebrated Swendsen-Wang algorithm. This leads to a theoretical unification for all the representations, and numerically, one can apply the most efficient algorithm in one representation and measure physical quantities in others. Moreover, by using the LC scheme, we construct a hierarchy of geometric objects that contain as special cases the q-flow clusters and the backbone of FK clusters, the exact values of whose fractal dimensions in two dimensions remain as an open question. Our work not only provides a unified framework and an efficient algorithm for the Potts model but also brings new insights into the rich geometric structures of the FK clusters.

Sign-problem-free effective models of triangular lattice quantum antiferromagnets

Abstract:The triangular lattice antiferromagnet with $S=1/2$ spins and nearest neighbor interactions is known to have long-range antiferromagnetic order, with nearest-neighbor spins at an angle of 120 degrees. Numerical studies of quantum phases proximate to this state have been limited to small systems because the of the sign-problem in Monte Carlo simulations in imaginary time. We propose an effective lattice model for quantum fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic order, and a sign-problem free Monte Carlo algorithm, enabling studies in large systems sizes. The model is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory coupled to gauge-charged scalars which have a relativistic dispersion in the continuum limit. Crucially, the gauge theory is odd, i.e. there is a static, background $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge charge on each site, accounting for the Berry phases of the half-odd-integer spins on each site. We present results of simulations on lattices of sizes up to $36 \times 36 \times 36$. Along with the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, our phase diagram has a valence bond solid state with a $\sqrt{12} \times \sqrt{12}$ unit cell, and a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid. Deconfined critical points or phases in intermediate regions are not ruled out by our present simulations.

Quantum Quench Dynamics of Geometrically Frustrated Ising Models

Abstract:Geometric frustration in two-dimensional Ising models allows for a wealth of exotic universal behavior, both Ising and non-Ising, in the presence of quantum fluctuations. In particular, the triangular antiferromagnet and Villain model in a transverse field can be understood through distinct XY pseudospins, but have qualitatively similar phase diagrams including a quantum phase transition in the (2+1)-dimensional XY universality class. While the quantum dynamics of modestly-sized systems can be simulated classically using tensor-based methods, these methods become infeasible for larger lattices. Here we perform both classical and quantum simulations of these dynamics, where our quantum simulator is a superconducting quantum annealer. Our observations on the triangular lattice suggest that the dominant quench dynamics are not described by the quantum Kibble-Zurek scaling of the quantum phase transition, but rather a faster coarsening dynamics in an effective two-dimensional XY model in the ordered phase. Similarly, on the Villain model, the scaling exponent does not match the Kibble-Zurek expectation. These results demonstrate the ability of quantum annealers to simulate coherent quantum dynamics and scale beyond the reach of classical approaches.

Abstract:Abstract Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations constitute nowadays one of the most powerful methods to study strongly correlated quantum systems, provided that no “sign problem” arises. However, many systems of interest, including highly frustrated magnets, suffer from an average sign that is close to zero in standard QMC simulations. Nevertheless, a possible sign problem depends on the simulation basis, and here we demonstrate how a suitable choice of cluster basis can be used to eliminate or at least reduce the sign problem in highly frustrated magnets that were so far inaccessible to efficient QMC simulations. We focus in particular on the application of a two-spin (dimer)-based QMC method to the thermodynamics of the spin-1/2 Shastry-Sutherland model for SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 .
Graphical Representations and Worm Algorithms for the O($N$) Spin Model

Abstract:We present a family of graphical representations for the O($N$) spin model, where $N \ge 1$ represents the spin dimension, and $N=1,2,3$ corresponds to the Ising, XY and Heisenberg models, respectively. With an integer parameter $0 \le \ell \le N/2$, each configuration is the coupling of $\ell$ copies of subgraphs consisting of directed flows and $N -2\ell$ copies of subgraphs constructed by undirected loops, which we call the XY and Ising subgraphs, respectively. On each lattice site, the XY subgraphs satisfy the Kirchhoff flow-conservation law and the Ising subgraphs obey the Eulerian bond condition. Then, we formulate worm-type algorithms and simulate the O($N$) model on the simple-cubic lattice for $N$ from 2 to 6 at all possible $\ell$. It is observed that the worm algorithm has much higher efficiency than the Metropolis method, and, for a given $N$, the efficiency is an increasing function of $\ell$. Beside Monte Carlo simulations, we expect that these graphical representations would provide a convenient basis for the study of the O($N$) spin model by other state-of-the-art methods like the tensor network renormalization.

Abstract:The trapped-ion quantum simulator has demonstrated qualitative properties of different physical models for up to tens of ions. In particular, a linear ion chain naturally hosts long-range Ising interactions under the laser driving, which has been used for various phenomena, such as quantum phase transition, localization, thermalization, and information propagation. For near-term practical usage, a central task is to find more quantitative applications of the noisy quantum simulators that are robust to small errors in the parameters. Here we report the quantum simulation of a long-range transverse-field Ising model using up to 61 ions and probe the critical behavior of its quantum phase transition through the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. By calibrating and verifying the coupling coefficients, we realize the same model for increasing ion numbers, so as to extract a critical exponent free of the finite-size effect. For ferromagnetic interaction, our exper-imental result agrees with the previous numerical prediction. As for the antiferromagnetic case, signals are too weak to fit a critical exponent due to the frustration in the interaction, but still consistent with the theory.

Abstract:Understanding quantum many-body states of correlated electrons is one main theme in modern condensed-matter physics. Given that the Fermi-Hubbard model, the prototype of correlated electrons, was recently realized in ultracold optical lattices, it is highly desirable to have controlled numerical methodology to provide precise finite-temperature results upon doping to directly compare with experiments. Here, we demonstrate the exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG) algorithm [Chen , Phys. Rev. X 8, 031082 (2018)2160-330810.1103/PhysRevX.8.031082], complemented by independent determinant quantum Monte Carlo, offers a powerful combination of tools for this purpose. XTRG provides full and accurate access to the density matrix and thus various spin and charge correlations, down to an unprecedented low temperature of a few percent of the tunneling energy. We observe excellent agreement with ultracold fermion measurements at both half filling and finite doping, including the sign-reversal behavior in spin correlations due to formation of magnetic polarons, and the attractive hole-doublon and repulsive hole-hole pairs that are responsible for the peculiar bunching and antibunching behaviors of the antimoments.

Abstract:Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken symmetry. We also present dynamic spectra of the phases, and note implications for experiments on Rydberg atoms.

Quantum scaling of the spin lattice relaxation rate in the checkerboard $J$-$Q$ model

Abstract:Motivated by recent progress on the experimental realization of proximate deconfined quantum critical point in a frustrated quantum magnet, we study the low-energy spin dynamics of a related checkerboard $J$-$Q$ model by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The ground state of this model undergoes a weakly first-order quantum phase transition with an emergent $O(4)$ symmetry between an antiferromagnetic state and a plaquette valence bond solid. The calculated spin lattice relaxation rate of nuclear magnetic resonance, $1/T_1$, exhibits distinct low-temperature behaviors depending on the ground states. With decreasing the temperature, $1/T_1$ rises up on the antiferromagnetic side, characterizing a crossover to the renormalized classical regime, whereas $1/T_1$ drops exponentially on the side of valence bond solid, reflecting the gap opening in the plaquette ordered phase. The extracted spin gap scales with the distance to the transition point as a power-law with an exponent $\phi\approx0.3$, consistent with the scaling ansatz $\phi=\nu z$ with $\nu\approx0.3$ and $z=1$. Near the quantum phase transition, the temperature dependent $1/T_1$ shows a broad crossover regime where a universal scaling $1/T_1\sim T^{\eta}$ with $\eta\approx0.6$ is found. Our results suggest a quantum scaling regime associated with the emergent enhanced symmetry near this first-order quantum phase transition.

Abstract:Quantum spin systems with strong geometric restrictions give rise to rich quantum phases such as valence bond solids and spin liquid states. However, the geometric restrictions often hamper the application of sophisticated numerical approaches. Based on the stochastic series expansion method, we develop an efficient and exact quantum Monte Carlo "sweeping cluster" algorithm which automatically satisfies the geometrical restrictions. Here we use the quantum dimer model as a benchmark to demonstrate the reliability and power of this algorithm. Comparing to existing numerical methods, we can obtain higher accuracy results for a wider parameter region and much more substantial system sizes.

Simulating the Transverse Field Ising Model on the Kagome Lattice using a Programmable Quantum Annealer

Abstract:The presence of competing interactions due to geometry leads to frustration in quantum spin models. As a consequence, the ground state of such systems often displays a large degeneracy that can be lifted due to thermal or quantum effects. One such example is the antiferromagnetic Ising model on the Kagome lattice. It was shown that while the same model on the triangular lattice is ordered at zero temperature for small transverse field due to an order by disorder mechanism, the Kagome lattice resists any such effects and exhibits only short range spin correlations and a trivial paramagnetic phase. We embed this model on the latest architecture of D-Wave's quantum annealer, the Advantage2 prototype, which uses the highly connected Zephyr graph. Using advanced embedding and calibration techniques, we are able to embed a Kagome lattice with mixed open and periodic boundary conditions of 231 sites on the full graph of the currently available prototype. Through forward annealing experiments, we show that under a finite longitudinal field the system exhibits a one-third magnetization plateau, consistent with a classical spin liquid state of reduced entropy. An anneal-pause-quench protocol is then used to extract an experimental ensemble of states resulting from the equilibration of the model at finite transverse and longitudinal field. This allows us to construct a partial phase diagram and confirm that the system exits the constrained Hilbert space of the classical spin liquid when subjected to a transverse field. We connect our results to previous theoretical results and quantum Monte Carlo simulation, which helps us confirm the validity of the quantum simulation realized here, thereby extracting insight into the performance of the D-Wave quantum annealer to simulate non-trivial quantum systems in equilibrium.

Abstract:We describe a new algorithm for Monte Carlo simulation of Ising spin systems and present results of a study comparing the speed of the new technique to that of a standard technique applied to a square lattice of 6400 spins evolving via single spin flips. We find that at temperatures T < Tc, the critical temperature, the new technique is faster than the standard technique, being ten times faster at T = 0.588 Tc. We expect that the new technique will be especially valuable in Monte Carlo simulation of the time evolution of binary alloy systems. The new algorithm is essentially a reorganization of the standard algorithm. It accounts for the a priori probability of changing spins before, rather than after, choosing the spin or spins to change.
