Abstract:Time is the grand stage where human activities take place (rational or otherwise). And the view of a branching temporal universe, or tree of possible events, with our actual history linearly advancing through it, is a widely shared cultural idea, not confined to Academia (cf. Borges brilliant 1941 essayEl Jardin de senderos que se bifurcan). Even though logic is often considered a study of timeless propositions, temporal languages and logics over tree structures have a long tradition. Philosophers have studied temporal structure and temporal reasoning since the 1950s, from the ‘tense logic’ of Prior (1967) to the ‘STIT’ system of Belnap et al. (2001). Moreover, starting from 1970s, computer scientists have joined in, and developed many further flavours of temporal logic, with major strands such as Pnueli on program correctness (Manna and Pnueli 1991), Emerson and Clarke on process specification and verification (Emerson and Clarke 1980, 1982), Reiter on the situation calculus in AI (Reiter 2001), and Thomas on the automata-theoretic foundations of computing (Thomas 1990). In addition, the pure firstand second-order logic of tree-like structures, starting from Rabin’s classic decidability result (Rabin 1969), provides deeper background (cf. Gradel et al. (2002)). Abstract:The most widely used attractive logical account of knowledge uses standard epistemic models, i.e., graphs whose edges are indistinguishability relations for agents. In this paper, we discuss more general topological models for a multi-agent epistemic language, whose main uses so far have been in reasoning about space. We show that this more geometrical perspective afiords greater powers of distinction in the study of common knowledge, deflning new collective agents, and merging information for groups of agents. 1. Epistemic logic in its standard guise 1.1. Basic epistemic logic. Epistemic logic is in wide use today as a description of knowledge and ignorance for agents in philosophy (14), computer science (13), (22), game theory (12), and other areas. In this paper, we assume familiarity with the basic language of propositional epistemic logic, interpreted over multi-agent S4 models whose accessibility relations are re∞exive and transitive. Alternative model classes occur, too, such as equivalence relations for each agent in multi-agent S5{but our discussion is largely independent from such choices. The key semantic clause about an agent's knowledge of a proposition says that Kiholds at a world x if and only ifis true in all worlds y accessible for i from x. That is, the epis- temic knowledge modality is really a modal box ⁄i`. For technical convenience, we will use the latter notation for knowledge in the rest of this paper. The main modern interest in epistemic logic has to do with analyzing iterated knowledge of agents about themselves and what others know, for purposes of communication and interaction. Cf. Abstract:A minor change to the standard epistemic logical language, replacing $K_{i}$ with $K_{\node{i,t}}$ where $t$ is a time instance, gives rise to a generalized and more expressive form of knowledge and common knowledge operators. We investigate the communication structures that are necessary for such generalized epistemic states to arise, and the inter-agent coordination tasks that require such knowledge. Previous work has established a relation between linear event ordering and nested knowledge, and between simultaneous event occurrences and common knowledge. In the new, extended, formalism, epistemic necessity is decoupled from temporal necessity. Nested knowledge and event ordering are shown to be related even when the nesting order does not match the temporal order of occurrence. The generalized form of common knowledge does {\em not} correspond to simultaneity. Rather, it corresponds to a notion of tight coordination, of which simultaneity is an instance.

Abstract:In current studies of knowledge at the interface of logic and epistemology, philosophical positions and logical systems lore meet in new ways. In this little piece, a programmatic sequel to van Benthem (2011) and a prequel to Baltag et al. (2015), I add some further perspectives and issues to this mix from dynamic-epistemic logics of information and inquiry. My aim is to show that we can have a yet richer agenda of epistemic themes, and a richer view of the interplay of logic and epistemology, when we make epistemic action a major focus on a par with knowledge or belief per se.

Abstract:This chapter is an attempt at clarifying the current scene of sometimes competing action logics, looking for compatibilities and convergences. Current paradigms for deliberate action fall into two broad families: dynamic logics of events, and STIT logics of achieving specified effects. We compare the two frameworks, and show how they can be related technically by embedding basic STIT into a modal logic of matrix games. Amongst various things, this analysis shows how the attractive principle of independence of agents' actions in STIT might actually be a source of high complexity in the total action logic. Our main point, however, is the compatibility of dynamic logics with explicit events and STIT logics based on a notion that we call 'control'-and we present a new system of dynamic-epistemic logic with control that has both. Finally, we discuss how dynamic logic and STIT face similar issues when including further crucial aspects of agency such as knowledge, preference, strategic behavior, and explicit acts of choice and deliberation.

Abstract:Over the past decades, logicians interested in rational agency and intelligent interaction studied major components of these phenomena, such as knowledge, belief, and preference. In recent years, standard ‘static’ logics describing information states of agents have been generalized to dynamic logics describing actions and events that produce information, revise beliefs, or change preferences, as explicit parts of the logical system. [22], [1], [12] are up-to-date accounts of this dynamic trend (the present paper follows Chapter 9 of the latter book). But in reality, concrete rational agency contains all these dynamic processes entangled. A concrete setting for this entanglement are games – and this paper is a survey of their interfaces with logic, both static and dynamic. Games are intriguing also since their analysis brings together two major streams, or tribal communities: ‘hard’ mathematical logics of computation, and ‘soft’ philosophical logics of propositional attitudes. Of course, this hard/soft distinction is spurious, and there is no natural border line between the two sources: it is their congenial mixture that makes current theories of agency so lively.

Abstract:A healthy field combines two driving forces, extension of coverage and theoretical reflection – and modal logic is no exception. In this talk, we look at some broader theoretical issues raised by recent developments in dynamic logics of information flow, whose main technical feature is the modal study of definable model change. Our pilot system will be public announcement logic PAL, the base calculus of update with hard information. We identify several general themes behind the particulars of its design. These include model-theoretic issues like the balance of expressive power for the static and dynamic components of the language, and learnability results in the form of preservation theorems. But we also discuss PAL’s calculus of reasoning, via correspondence analysis of its axioms as constraints on update functions in domains of inquiry, showing how this leads to two recent extensions: protocol versions where no reduction to the static base language occurs, and substitution-closed core versions of the system. Both moves exemplify more general operations on modal logics. Next, we consider other dynamic-epistemic logics, and amplify on the above themes, while adding some new ones. First, we discuss event models and product update in DEL, a calculus of model construction that shows analogies with process algebra, but also with the epistemic μ–calculus. Then we turn to dynamic logics for belief change under incoming hard and soft information that upgrade plausibility relations without eliminating worlds. We discuss what logical format best captures the generality needed to avoid a jungle of revision policies. In this setting also, we look at the general phenomenon of defining new static modalities by dynamic considerations. While all this broadens our view of single-step model transformations, another conspicuous dimension in current research is the global temporal horizon of a process of inquiry, a conversation, or a game, adding procedural information to local updates. We discuss representation results linking local dynamic and global temporal logics, while also pointing at specific model-theoretic issues arising with concrete processes involving iterated hard or soft announcements, and their limit behavior. Here we link up with modal fixed-point logics, though the general situation is far from clear. As a very concrete instance of merging local and global perspectives, we discuss some recent links between dynamic epistemic logics and formal learning theory, where modal models acquire a new meaning as priors pre-encoding learning methods.

Abstract:Classical epistemic logic describes implicit knowledge of agents about facts and knowledge of other agents based on semantic information. The latter is produced by acts of Observation or communication that are described well by dynamic epistemic logics. What these logics do not describe, however, is how significant information is also produced by acts of inference and key axioms of the system merely postulate "deductive closure. In this paper, we take the view that all information is produced by acts, and hence we also need a dynamic logic of inference steps showing what effort on the part of the agent makes a conclusion explicit knowledge. Strong omniscience properties of agents should be seen not as static idealizations, but as the result of dynamic processes that agents engage in. This raises two questions: (a) how to define suitable information states of agents and matching notions of explicit knowledge, (b) how to define natural processes over these states that generate new explicit knowledge. To this end, we use a static base from the existing awareness literature, extending it into a dynamic system that includes traditional acts of observation, but also adding and dropping formulas from the current 'awareness' set. We give a completeness theorem, and we show how this dynamics updates explicit knowledge. Then we extend our approach to multi-agent scenarios where awareness changes may happen privately. Finally, we mention further directions and related approaches. Our contribution can be seen as a 'dynamification' of existing awareness logics.

Abstract:This paper builds bridges between the two main families of modal logics of belief change, both based on plausibility pre-orders: dynamic doxastic logics computing stepwise updates, and temporal doxastic logics describing global system evolutions. Following earlier results linking dynamic-epistemic and epistemic-temporal logics, we prove representation theorems showing under which conditions a doxastic temporal model can be represented as the stepwise evolution of a doxastic model under successive 'priority updates'. This allows for merges, where, in particular, the notion of a 'temporal protocol' defining a global information process (for instance of communication or learning) can be introduced into the more local dynamic perspective.

Abstract:Substantial efforts have been made in developing various Decision Modeling formalisms, both from industry and academia. A challenging problem is that of expressing decision knowledge in the context of incomplete knowledge. In such contexts, decisions depend on what is known or not known. We argue that none of the existing formalisms for modeling decisions are capable of correctly capturing the epistemic nature of such decisions, inevitably causing issues in situations of uncertainty. This paper presents a new language for modeling decisions with incomplete knowledge. It combines three principles: stratification, autoepistemic logic, and definitions. A knowledge base in this language is a hierarchy of epistemic theories, where each component theory may epistemically reason on the knowledge in lower theories, and decisions are made using definitions with epistemic conditions.

Abstract:We characterize four types of agentive knowledge using a stit semantics over branching discrete-time structures. These are \emph{ex ante} knowledge, \emph{ex interim} knowledge, \emph{ex post} knowledge, and know-how. The first three are notions that arose from game-theoretical analyses on the stages of information disclosure across the decision making process, and the fourth has gained prominence both in logics of action and in deontic logic as a means to formalize ability. In recent years, logicians in AI have argued that any comprehensive study of responsibility attribution and blameworthiness should include proper treatment of these kinds of knowledge. This paper intends to clarify previous attempts to formalize them in stit logic and to propose alternative interpretations that in our opinion are more akin to the study of responsibility in the stit tradition. The logic we present uses an extension with knowledge operators of the Xstit language, and formulas are evaluated with respect to branching discrete-time models. We also present an axiomatic system for this logic, and address its soundness and completeness.

Abstract:Current dynamic epistemic logics for analyzing effects of informational events often become cumbersome and opaque when common knowledge is added for groups of agents. Still, postconditions involving common knowledge are essential to successful multi-agent communication. We propose new systems that extend the epistemic base language with a new notion of 'relativized common knowledge', in such a way that the resulting full dynamic logic of information flow allows for a compositional analysis of all epistemic postconditions via perspicuous 'reduction axioms'. We also show how such systems can deal with factual alteration, rather than just information change, making them cover a much wider range of realistic events. After a warmup stage of analyzing logics for public announcements, our main technical results are expressivity and completeness theorems for a much richer logic that we call LCC. This is a dynamic epistemic logic whose static base is propositional dynamic logic (PDL), interpreted epistemically. This system is capable of expressing all model-shifting operations with finite action models, while providing a compositional analysis for a wide range of informational events. This makes LCC a serious candidate for a standard in dynamic epistemic logic, as we illustrate by analyzing some complex communication scenarios, including sending successive emails with both 'cc' and 'bcc' lines, and other private announcements to subgroups. Our proofs involve standard modal techniques, combined with a new application of Kleene's theorem on finite automata, as well as new Ehrenfeucht games of model comparison.

Abstract:In this paper we take the S5 definition of knowledge, and have a new look at logics combining modalities for public announcements, action models, common knowledge and relativized common knowledge. In particular, we prove two expressivity results which previously have only been shown for the case where knowledge is represented using arbitrary Kripke models but have remained open for the case of S5 models: public announcement logic with relativized common knowledge is strictly more expressive than public announcement logic with common knowledge, and action model logic with common knowledge is strictly more expressive than public announcement logic with common knowledge. We also propose and study a definition of relativized common knowledge for action model logic.

Abstract:This work builds upon a well-established research tradition on modal logics of awareness. One of its aims is to export tools and techniques to other areas within modal logic. To this end, we illustrate a number of significant bridges with abstract argumentation, justification logics, the epistemic logic of knowing-what and deontic logic, where basic notions and definitional concepts can be expressed in terms of the awareness operator combined with the box modality. Furthermore, these conceptual links point to interesting properties of awareness sets beyond those standardly assumed in awareness logics, i.e. positive and negative introspection. We show that the properties we list are characterised by corresponding canonical formulas, so as to obtain a series of off-the-shelf axiomatisations for them. As a second focus, we investigate the general dynamics of this framework by means of event models. Of specific interest in this context is to know under which conditions, given a model that satisfies some property, the update with an event model keeps it within the intended class. This is known as the closure problem in general dynamic epistemic logics. As a main contribution, we prove a number of closure theorems providing sufficient conditions for the preservation of our properties. Again, these results enable us to axiomatize our dynamic logics by means of reduction axioms.

Abstract:Mathematical representation of knowledge and belief has become a topic of increasing interest. An individual knows or believes certain things based on the information she has. What type of mathematical models can we use for precise representations of her information, knowledge or beliefs? When an individual's environment involves other individuals, she may know what others know, and such knowledge depends on the knowledge that others have. How can we represent the relations between her knowledge and the knowledge of others? Finally, an individual may obtain new information during the course of her activities by observing facts in nature, interacting with other individuals, making inferences from what she previously knows, and so on. How can we capture these informational changes in her knowledge? Investigations of these questions have been addressed under the umbrella term, 'intelligent interaction', and they have been studied in various fields.There are two important aspects in describing intelligent interaction. One is how agents' epistemic states change over relevant informational events. Different informational events change agents' information differently and the way that informational events change agents' information can be quite subtle. Therefore, it is crucial to get a good grasp on informational events and their informational effects. I call this aspect epistemic dynamics. The other is what informational events can take place in the course of agents' interaction. Both the information that agents have and the way that the information changes depend not only on what informational event happens but also on what kind of process agents' interaction involves. Informational events that can happen reflect what the process is and, as such, are important to be captured. I call the kind of information protocol information. The dissertation will investigate intelligent interaction from the perspectives of epistemic dynamics and protocol information. The first objectives of the dissertation is to develop a formal framework that represents the two perspectives. The formal framework is developed by merging the two major systems in the literature, Dynamic Epistemic Logic (DEL) and Epistemic Temporal Logic (ETL). The second objective of the dissertation is to illustrate how our new framework can throw new light on existing philosophical problems. In particular, we will study The Knowability Paradox and Epistemic Closure Principle by using our formal framework.

Abstract:In recent years, a number of 'dynamic epistemic logics' have been developed for dealing with information, communication, and interaction. This paper is a survey of conceptual issues and open mathematical problems emanating from this development. 1 Logical Dynamics The traditional paradigm of logic is drawing a conclusion from some given premises. But derivation from data already at our disposal is just one way in which information can be obtained. We can also observe new facts, or just ask some better-informed person whom we trust. Concomitantly with all this information flow, our knowledge and beliefs change, and this adaptation process may even be triggered by further cues. Such cognitive actions are of logical interest per se, and their explicit study and its various repercussions has been described as a 'Dynamic Turn' in logic (van Benthem 1996). In particular, relevant actions in this broader setting need not be single-agent tasks such as drawing a conclusion or observing some fact. After all, perhaps the simplest logical scenario for getting or giving information is asking a question. But this essentially involves information flow between two agents, and their mutual epistemic and 'social' interactions as the question is asked and an answer is given. An excellent framework for multi-agent dynamic behaviour in communication is epistemic logic (introduced in Section 2), suitably 'dynamified' by using ideas from the dynamic logic of actions. Section 3 is about the best-explored system of this kind, viz. the dynamic logic of public announcements. Section 4 generalizes this to general dynamic-epistemic logic of actions or events whose observation conveys information. The resulting technical questions here blend into issues about more classical logical systems, which are discussed in Section 5 on first-order and fixed-point logics. But knowledge and ignorance are not the only attitudes of participants in a conversation. They also have beliefs about their current situation and expectations about the future. These are revised as observation and communication take place. Thus, epistemic dynamics runs into belief revision. Section 6 is devoted to links between dynamicepistemic logic and belief revision theory as developed in AI and related areas.
