Abstract:As adaptive Web applications are gaining importance in software domains nowadays, there is a need for an effective method to construct such applications. In this paper, we propose MAWA, a method for model-driven development of adaptive Web applications. MAWA considers the architecture of adaptive Web applications and the key elements of the development activity. It adopts an iterative, incremental development process, and the adaptive model, which is composed of context model and user model, is highlighted. Besides, the adaptive categories and mechanism are specified in MAWA, which are used to support the implementation of the adaptive behaviors. A code generation strategy is integrated into MAWA, and it can help us to produce the applications quickly and effectively.

Abstract:We present our design exploration for re-thinking underlying principles of 3D modelling activity on multi-touch tablets for novice users, identifying some of usability problems that often hinder the user interaction. We introduce \"1.2 hand input,\" a specific interaction technique that helps novice users to gain understanding and orientation in interacting with 3D space on a 2D screen, and we derive multiple UI artefacts and techniques that take advantage of the particular characteristics afforded by this technique: a clear separation between the actions of modelling an object and of changing the viewpoint, a reduction of hand occlusion while performing multi-touch interactions by extending the touchable areas around the object model, and an improved access to the user's action history by combining the concept of viewpoint change with past interaction sequences re-shaping how traditionally the undo and redo actions have been done in the modelling activity.

Abstract:The design of interactive systems is a process of transformation from problem domain to implementation domain. A mobile interactive system design differs from traditional software design in the perspective providing to conceptual modeling. With a diversity of user requirements and devices, it more concentrates on knowledge about the context of use rather than static information of problem domain. This paper proposes a multidimension description method which can describe those concepts related to special user requirements in the special context from four aspects: the set of static conceptual elements, process set, constraint set and interactive set. Then based on the conceptual model, a mobile interactive system generation framework is proposed to accurately map those concepts into requirement analysis and the implementation process; under the guidance of design pattern, a usable and useful interactive system can be achieved. Finally, we give a prototype of campus navigation system in which we successful used the generation framework.

Abstract:With the advent of multi-touch tabletops, software developers are creating innovative interfaces for applications such as interactive map systems. In this article, we summarized three representative interfaces from prevalent electronic map applications and literaturesgesture based, widget based, and hybrid, which supported both gestures and widgetsand then compared the effectiveness and the efficiency of these three interfaces by experiments. The results show that the hybrid interface had a better performance, requiring less task-completion time and operations, and causing less arm fatigue. The widget-based interface had the least distance traversed by fingers, but it required many tapping operations. The gesture-based interface was easier to learn compared to the widget-based interface, but the distance traversed during finger movements was the longest. Based on the findings from our experiments, we discuss the implications for the design of map exploration interfaces on multi-touch tabletops.

Abstract:The existing software engineering seldom considers software usability, and human-computer interaction (HCI) techniques which can improve the software usability cannot guarantee development efficiency. Recently, more and more stakeholders and users begin to regard the usability as an important software requirement. In order to bring respective advantages of software engineering and HCI techniques into full play to improve software usability and development efficiency, the paper presents user model driven software development, which integrates HCI techniques into software development method by eliciting user model under the participation of user, HCI designer and software engineer. Applications show that the method can be effectively applied to small software development team, and can raise software usability and development efficiency.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWith the popularity of pads, large touch screens, notebooks and smart mobiles, it is a reasonable requirement that modelers use such devices to models. However, there are few modeling tools that take full advantage of the devices. This paper discusses a Web based UML modeling tool with touch screens, based on our full analysis of human-machine interaction modes for software modeling. The tool provides more input means, i.e. combining gesture input and traditional keyboard and mouse input, and supports cross-platforms modeling by using HTML 5.

Abstract:The conflict between the rapid iteration demand of prototyping and the time-consuming nature of user tests has led researchers to adopt AI methods to identify usability issues. However, these AI-driven methods concentrate on evaluating the feasibility of a system, while often overlooking the influence of specified user characteristics and usage contexts. Our work proposes a tool named SimUser based on large language models (LLMs) with the Chain-of-Thought structure and user modeling method. It generates usability feedback by simulating the interaction between users and applications, which is influenced by user characteristics and contextual factors. The empirical study (48 human users and 21 designers) validated that in the context of a simple smartwatch interface, SimUser could generate heuristic usability feedback with the similarity varying from 35.7% to 100% according to the user groups and usability category. Our work provides insights into simulating users by LLM to improve future design activities.

Abstract:Internet of Things technologies and applications are evolving and continuously gaining traction in all fields and environments, including homes, cities, services, industry and commercial enterprises. However, still many problems need to be addressed. For instance, the IoT vision is mainly focused on the technological and infrastructure aspect, and on the management and analysis of the huge amount of generated data, while so far the development of front-end and user interfaces for IoT has not played a relevant role in research. On the contrary, user interfaces can play a key role in the acceptance of IoT solutions by final adopters. In this paper we discuss the requirements and usage scenarios covering the front end aspects of IoT systems and we present a model-driven approach to the design of such interfaces by: defining specific components and design patterns using a visual modeling language for IoT applications; describing an implementation of the solution that comprises also automatic code generation from models; and by showing the solution at work.

Abstract:In order to reduce the cognitive workload and operation difficulty,this paper utilizes an adaptive human computer interaction strategy based on context awareness,and analyzes its interaction mechanisms and visualizations.A new user interface model is proposed to guide the interface design and prototype development.The model defines different types of channels for context data acquiring,and describes the context information's functions and logical structures.Adaptation triggering rules and controlling strategies are used to restrict the state transitions during the operation process.Interface modes and their transition functions are defined,and the related visualization presentations styles are described,such as reconstruction,replacement,geometry transition,filter and push.The model constructs the evaluation functions through the different metrics from the user feedback information,and it can help adjust and refine the adaptation mechanism.Finally,a prototype of adaptive user interface for mobile phone contact list is provided,and it supplies users with high efficiency and satisfactions during the user test.It illustrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed user interface model.

As a conceptual design of the user interface, the domain knowledge defines the user interface in terms of objects, actions and their relationships that the user would use to interact with the application system. It also serves as input to a user interface management system (UIMS) and is the kernel of the target user interface. The principal ideas and the implementation techniques of the approach is discussed. The user interface model, user interface designer oriented high-level specification notation, and the transformation algorithms on domain knowledge are presented.

Abstract:Today, CAD/CAM/CAE tools are highly graphical and interactive. But how an interface can be more helpful is not ascertained yet and still interesting to many software workers. From the object-oriented point of view, based on knowledge deducing and event stack structure, we propose a new interface model SRT. Using this model, we have developed an entirely new interaction technique. In this paper, after a review on the development of users interface models and interaction techniques, we will give a detailed definition of SRT, followed by a discussion of what a role it plays in users' design work. Based on SRT model, we developed SDDT, a Software Document Design supporting Tool of ICSDE system. SDDT consists of a concise expert system and a Software Graphic Document edit Too, along with a Software Textual Document edit Tool. SDDT now has been realized on HP workstations, and the new interface of it brought by SRT model has proven to be a very successful interface. In this paper, we will also describe the interface of SDDT.

Abstract:With the development of technology, the improvement of living standards, personalized designs that emphasize diversity and self-fulfillment are becoming more and more popular. As a result, designers must focus more on user needs. Traditionally, most of designers only focus on satisfying users’ functional needs and often ignore users’ emotional and psychological needs. This paper presents a design method that combines interaction design with axiomatic design. The proposed method first employs interaction design to acquire user needs with respect to three aspects: “people”, “products” and “environment” and then adopts axiomatic design to complete the conceptual design. The methodology is demonstrated and validated with a case study of children bicycle. The results show that the proposed method significantly enhances users’ experience of the product and meets more comprehensive user needs, especially in terms of users’ psychological and spiritual needs.

Abstract:Web applications have witnessed a significant improvement that exhibit advanced user interface behaviors and functionalities. Along with this evolution, Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) were proposed as a response to these necessities and have combined the richness and interactivity of desktop interfaces into the web distribution model. However, RIAs are complex applications and their development requires designing and implementation which are time-consuming and the available tools are specialized in manual design. In this paper, we present a new model driven approach in which we used well known Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) frameworks and technologies, such as Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF), Graphical Modeling Framework (GMF), Query View Transformation (QVTo) and Acceleo to enable the design and the code automatic generation of the RIA. The method focus on simplifying the task for the designer and not necessary be aware of the implementation specification.
AutoGameUI: Constructing High-Fidelity Game UIs via Multimodal Learning and Interactive Web-Based Tool

Abstract:We introduce an innovative system, AutoGameUI, for efficiently constructing cohesive user interfaces in game development. Our system is the first to address the coherence issue arising from integrating inconsistent UI and UX designs, typically leading to mismatches and inefficiencies. We propose a two-stage multimodal learning pipeline to obtain comprehensive representations of both UI and UX designs, and to establish their correspondences. Through the correspondences, a cohesive user interface is automatically constructed from pairwise designs. To achieve high-fidelity effects, we introduce a universal data protocol for precise design descriptions and cross-platform applications. We also develop an interactive web-based tool for game developers to facilitate the use of our system. We create a game UI dataset from actual game projects and combine it with a public dataset for training and evaluation. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in maintaining coherence between the constructed interfaces and the original designs.

Abstract:In order to improve application development efficiency for multiple mobile operating system platforms, a MDA based approach named MAMDA (Mobile Application Model Driven Approach) is proposed. In MAMDA, a PMI (Platform Independent Model) is established, which includes both state and class models and is represented by UML. The PIM can be transformed into DSPF (Domain Specific Plan File) file which is in XML style. In DSPF, embedded Ruby scripts are used to enhance action semantics. With the help of specific transform template according to different platforms, the DSPF files will be transformed into corresponding PSMs (Platform Specific Models) and then generate source codes. This paper introduces the process of MAMDA and describes the key techniques about application modeling and model transformation. An example case of mobile application development for multi-platform with MAMDA approach was given in the last.

Abstract:The smartphone featured with surpassing the traditional-functioned featurephones turns out to be the future trend. This paper discusses the differences between smartphones and featurephones, new features of the software interface of smartphones, such as functions, size of its screen, multi-touch and intelligent sensing technology, and some peculiarities of software interface of smartphone, such as its property of being sensed or understood, efficiency and artistic quality, etc. It also discusses concrete methods of diverse design of the overall presentation of interface signs, visual style, and specific operation, etc. Furthermore, this article conducts the user evaluation test of actual using results of software interface for three kinds of smart phone system and quantitative analysis. These are conducive for designers to master the evaluation of specific function of interface presenting effect, and making possible improvements.
