Abstract:This paper presents an experiment that compared the complexity of processing Chinese subject-relative and object-relative clause structures in a self-paced reading paradigm. The elements of the head nouns that relative clauses modify in the main sentence and sentence types were manipulated. The head nouns function as subject or object in the main sentence and the sentence types were divided in the subject-relative construction and object-relative construction. The results showed that Chinese subject-relative clauses were more difficult to process than object-relative clauses, especially when the head nouns function as the object in the matrix. These results contrast with results from processing other Subject-Verb-Object languages like English. The possible explanation was proposed on the basis of the storage cost of working memory and difficulty of integration among different sentence elements.
