Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a logic based on team semantics, called $\mathbf {FOT} $ , whose expressive power is elementary, i.e., coincides with first-order logic both on the level of sentences and (possibly open) formulas, and we also show that a sublogic of $\mathbf {FOT} $ , called $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ , captures exactly downward closed elementary (or first-order) team properties. We axiomatize completely the logic $\mathbf {FOT} $ , and also extend the known partial axiomatization of dependence logic to dependence logic enriched with the logical constants in $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ .
Logics of polyhedral reachability

Abstract:Polyhedral semantics is a recently introduced branch of spatial modal logic, in which modal formulas are interpreted as piecewise linear subsets of an Euclidean space. Polyhedral semantics for the basic modal language has already been well investigated. However, for many practical applications of polyhedral semantics, it is advantageous to enrich the basic modal language with a reachability modality. Recently, a language with an Until-like spatial modality has been introduced, with demonstrated applicability to the analysis of 3D meshes via model checking. In this paper, we exhibit an axiom system for this logic, and show that it is complete with respect to polyhedral semantics. The proof consists of two major steps: First, we show that this logic, which is built over Grzegorczyk's system $\mathsf{Grz}$, has the finite model property. Subsequently, we show that every formula satisfied in a finite poset is also satisfied in a polyhedral model, thereby establishing polyhedral completeness.

Abstract:For a class K of finite graphs we consider the following three statements. (i) K has bounded tree-depth. (ii) First-order logic FO has an effective generalized quantifier elimination on K. (iii) The parameterized model checking for FO on K is in para-AC(0). We prove that (i) double right arrow(ii) and (ii) double left right arrow (iii). All three statements are equivalent if K is closed under taking subgraphs, but not in general. By a result due to Elberfeld et al. [12] monadic second-order logic MSO and FO have the same expressive power on every class of graphs of bounded tree-depth. Hence the implication (i) double right arrow(iii) holds for MSO, too; it is the analogue of Courcelle's Theorem for tree-depth (instead of tree-width) and para-AC(0) (instead of FPT). In [13] it was already shown that the model-checking for a fixed MSO-property on a class of graphs of bounded tree-depth is in AC(0).

Abstract:We show in this paper a special extended logic, partition logic based on so called partition quantifiers, is able to capture some important complexity classes NP, P and NL by its natural fragments. The Fagin's Theorem and Immerman-Vardi's Theorem are rephrased and strengthened into a uniform partition logic setting. Also the dual operators for the partition quantifiers are introduced to expose some of their important model-theoretic properties. In particular they enable us to show a 0-1 law for the partition logic, even when finite variable infinitary logic is adjunct to it. As a consequence, partition logic cannot count without built-in ordering on structures. Considering its better theoretical properties and tools than those of second order logic, partition logic may provide us with an alternative, yet uniform insight for descriptive complexity.

Abstract:We consider the extension of the two-variable guarded fragment logic with local Presburger quantifiers. These are quantifiers that can express properties such as "the number of incoming blue edges plus twice the number of outgoing red edges is at most three times the number of incoming green edges" and captures various description logics with counting, but without constant symbols. We show that the satisfiability problem for this logic is EXP-complete. While the lower bound already holds for the standard two-variable guarded fragment logic, the upper bound is established by a novel, yet simple deterministic graph-based algorithm.

Finite Variable Counting Logics with Restricted Requantification

Abstract:Counting logics with a bounded number of variables form one of the central concepts in descriptive complexity theory. Although they restrict the number of variables that a formula can contain, the variables can be nested within scopes of quantified occurrences of themselves. In other words, the variables can be requantified. We study the fragments obtained from counting logics by restricting requantification for some but not necessarily all the variables. Similar to the logics without limitation on requantification, we develop tools to investigate the restricted variants. Specifically, we introduce a bijective pebble game in which certain pebbles can only be placed once and for all, and a corresponding two-parametric family of Weisfeiler-Leman algorithms. We show close correspondences between the three concepts. By using a suitable cops-and-robber game and adaptations of the Cai-Fürer-Immerman construction, we completely clarify the relative expressive power of the new logics. We show that the restriction of requantification has beneficial algorithmic implications in terms of graph identification. Indeed, we argue that with regard to space complexity, non-requantifiable variables only incur an additive polynomial factor when testing for equivalence. In contrast, for all we know, requantifiable variables incur a multiplicative linear factor. Finally, we observe that graphs of bounded tree-depth and 3-connected planar graphs can be identified using no, respectively, only a very limited number of requantifiable variables.

A Schema-aware Logic Reformulation for Graph Reachability

Abstract:Graph reachability is the task of understanding whether two distinct points in a graph are interconnected by arcs to which in general a semantic is attached. Reachability has plenty of applications, ranging from motion planning to routing. Improving reachability requires structural knowledge of relations so as to avoid the complexity of traditional depth-first and breadth-first strategies, implemented in logic languages. In some contexts, graphs are enriched with their schema definitions establishing domain and range for every arc. The introduction of a schema-aware formalization for guiding the search may result in a sensitive improvement by cutting out unuseful paths and prioritising those that, in principle, reach the target earlier. In this work, we propose a strategy to automatically exclude and sort certain graph paths by exploiting the higher-level conceptualization of instances. The aim is to obtain a new first-order logic reformulation of the graph reachability scenario, capable of improving the traditional algorithms in terms of time, space requirements, and number of backtracks. The experiments exhibit the expected advantages of the approach in reducing the number of backtracks during the search strategy, resulting in saving time and space as well.

Abstract:For every $q\in \mathbb N$ let $\textrm{FO}_q$ denote the class of sentences of first-order logic FO of quantifier rank at most $q$. If a graph property can be defined in $\textrm{FO}_q$, then it can be decided in time $O(n^q)$. Thus, minimizing $q$ has favorable algorithmic consequences. Many graph properties amount to the existence of a certain set of vertices of size $k$. Usually this can only be expressed by a sentence of quantifier rank at least $k$. We use the color-coding method to demonstrate that some (hyper)graph problems can be defined in $\textrm{FO}_q$ where $q$ is independent of $k$. This property of a graph problem is equivalent to the question of whether the corresponding parameterized problem is in the class $\textrm{para-AC}^0$. It is crucial for our results that the FO-sentences have access to built-in addition and multiplication. It is known that then FO corresponds to the circuit complexity class uniform $\textrm{AC}^0$. We explore the connection between the quantifier rank of FO-sentences and the depth of $\textrm{AC}^0$-circuits, and prove that $\textrm{FO}_q \subsetneq \textrm{FO}_{q+1}$ for structures with built-in addition and multiplication.
Model-checking positive equality free logic on a fixed structure (direttissima)

Abstract:We give a new, direct proof of the tetrachotomy classification for the model-checking problem of positive equality-free logic parameterised by the model. The four complexity classes are Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete. The previous proof of this result relied on notions from universal algebra and core-like structures called U-X-cores. This new proof uses only relations, and works for infinite structures also in the distinction between Logspace and NP-hard under Turing reductions. For finite domains, the membership in NP and co-NP follows from a simple argument, which breaks down already over an infinite set with a binary relation. We develop some interesting new algorithms to solve NP and co-NP membership for a variety of infinite structures. We begin with those first-order definable in (Q;=), the so-called equality languages, then move to those first-order definable in (Q;<), the so-called temporal languages. However, it is first-order expansions of the Random Graph (V,E) that provide the most interesting examples. In all of these cases, the derived classification is a tetrachotomy between Logspace, NP-complete, co-NP-complete and Pspace-complete.

Abstract:We study the parameterized space complexity of model-checking first-order logic with a bounded number of variables. By restricting the number of the quantifier alternations we obtain problems complete for a natural hierarchy between parameterized logarithmic space and FPT. We call this hierarchy the tree hierarchy, provide a machine characterization, and link it to the recently introduced classes PATH and TREE. We show that the lowest class PATH collapses to parameterized logarithmic space only if Savitch’s theorem can be improved. Finally, we settle the complexity with respect to the tree-hierarchy of finding short undirected paths and small undirected trees.

Abstract:According to a theorem of Courcelle monadic second-order logic and guarded second-order logic (where one can also quantify over sets of edges) have the same expressive power over the class of all countable $k$-sparse hypergraphs. In the first part of the present paper we extend this result to hypergraphs of arbitrary cardinality. In the second part, we present a generalisation dealing with methods to encode sets of vertices by single vertices.

Abstract:Descriptive complexity theory aims at inferring a problem's computational complexity from the syntactic complexity of its description. A cornerstone of this theory is Fagin's Theorem, by which a graph property is expressible in existential second-order logic (ESO logic) if, and only if, it is in NP. A natural question, from the theory's point of view, is which syntactic fragments of ESO logic also still characterize NP. Research on this question has culminated in a dichotomy result by Gottlob, Kolatis, and Schwentick: for each possible quantifier prefix of an ESO formula, the resulting prefix class either contains an NP-complete problem or is contained in P. However, the exact complexity of the prefix classes inside P remained elusive. In the present paper, we clear up the picture by showing that for each prefix class of ESO logic, its reduction closure under first-order reductions is either FO, L, NL, or NP. For undirected, self-loop-free graphs two containment results are especially challenging to prove: containment in L for the prefix $\exists R_1 \cdots \exists R_n \forall x \exists y$ and containment in FO for the prefix $\exists M \forall x \exists y$ for monadic $M$. The complex argument by Gottlob, Kolatis, and Schwentick concerning polynomial time needs to be carefully reexamined and either combined with the logspace version of Courcelle's Theorem or directly improved to first-order computations. A different challenge is posed by formulas with the prefix $\exists M \forall x\forall y$: We show that they express special constraint satisfaction problems that lie in L.

Abstract:Sudderth, Wainwright, and Willsky have conjectured that the Bethe approximation corresponding to any fixed point of the belief propagation algorithm over an attractive, pairwise binary graphical model provides a lower bound on the true partition function. In this work, we resolve this conjecture in the affirmative by demonstrating that, for any graphical model with binary variables whose potential functions (not necessarily pairwise) are all log-supermodular, the Bethe partition function always lower bounds the true partition function. The proof of this result follows from a new variant of the "four functions" theorem that may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Every Sahlqvist formula is an elementary complete one.If we take Sahlqvist formulae as addition axioms to the minimal normal modal logic K,we get a strong elementary logic,namely Sahlqvist logic.In this paper we discuss properties of the class of Sahlqvist logics S.It is closed under intersection and another set operation that can be looked upon as logical union,so that S forms a lattice.Let E denote the class of logics K(?)fin_(mn).It is easy to determine that E is a subclass of S.We can deduce that every K(?)fin_(mn) is a canonical logic,following from the Sahlqvist theorem.We can also get the same result by studying properties of the canonical frame of K(?)fin_(mn).E is an interesting subclass of S.It is a sublattice of S.It has a regular geometric form, in which there are infinite length chains,but every antichain in E is finite.Besides, the well known tabular logics are closely related to E,for every tabular logic is an extension of some K(?)fin_(mn).From the result that E has infinite length chains,we can easily know that S also has infinite length antichain.We can prove that in the class {K(?)~i□p→□(?)~ip|i<ω},every logic is not contained in others,so that this class is an infinite length antichain of S,which is different from the result of E.The incomplete degree is an important concept when we study logical lattices.Usually,it is not easy to study the incomplete degree problems.However,we can easily conclude that the incomplete degree of Sahlqvist logic respect to the lattice S is 1.
Structure-Aware Lower Bounds and Broadening the Horizon of Tractability for QBF

Abstract:The QSAT problem, which asks to evaluate a quantified Boolean formula (QBF), is of fundamental interest in approximation, counting, decision, and probabilistic complexity and is also considered the prototypical PSPACEcomplete problem. As such, it has previously been studied under various structural restrictions (parameters), most notably parameterizations of the primal graph representation of instances. Indeed, it is known that QSAT remains PSPACE-complete even when restricted to instances with constant treewidth of the primal graph, but the problem admits a double-exponential fixed-parameter algorithm parameterized by the vertex cover number (primal graph). However, prior works have left a gap in our understanding of the complexity of QSAT when viewed from the perspective of other natural representations of instances, most notably via incidence graphs. In this paper, we develop structure-aware reductions which allow us to obtain essentially tight lower bounds for highly restricted instances of QSAT, including instances whose incidence graphs have bounded treedepth or feedback vertex number. We complement these lower bounds with novel algorithms for QSAT which establish a nearly-complete picture of the problem's complexity under standard graph-theoretic parameterizations. We also show implications for other natural graph representations, and obtain novel upper as well as lower bounds for QSAT under more fine-grained parameterizations of the primal graph.

Abstract:There are standard logics DTC, TC, and LFP capturing the complexity classes L, NL, and P on ordered structures, respectively. In [4] we have shown that LFP_{inv}, the ``order-invariant least fixed-point logic LFP,'' captures P (on all finite structures) if and only if there is a listing of the P subsets of the set TAUT of propositional tautologies. We are able to extend the result to listings of the L-subsets (NL-subsets) of TAUT and the logic DTC_{inv} (TC_{inv}). As a byproduct we get that LFP_{inv} captures P if DTC_{inv} captures L. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a listing of the L-subsets of TAUT is equivalent to the existence of an almost space optimal algorithm for TAUT. To obtain this result we have to derive a space version of a theorem of Levin on optimal inverters.
Simulating Logspace-Recursion with Logarithmic Quantifier Depth

Abstract:The fixed-point logic LREC= was developed by Grohe et al. (CSL 2011) in the quest for a logic to capture all problems decidable in logarithmic space. It extends FO+C, first-order logic with counting, by an operator that formalises a limited form of recursion. We show that for every LREC=-definable property on relational structures, there is a constant k such that the k-variable fragment of first-order logic with counting quantifiers expresses the property via formulae of logarithmic quantifier depth. This yields that any pair of graphs separable by the property can be distinguished with the k-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm in a logarithmic number of iterations. In particular, it implies that a constant dimension of the algorithm identifies every interval graph and every chordal claw-free graph in logarithmically many iterations, since every such graph admits LREC=-definable canonisation.

Reachability and Matching in Single Crossing Minor Free Graphs

Abstract:We show that for each single crossing graph $H$, a polynomially bounded weight function for all $H$-minor free graphs $G$ can be constructed in Logspace such that it gives nonzero weights to all the cycles in $G$. This class of graphs subsumes almost all classes of graphs for which such a weight function is known to be constructed in Logspace. As a consequence, we obtain that for the class of $H$-minor free graphs where $H$ is a single crossing graph, reachability can be solved in UL, and bipartite maximum matching can be solved in SPL, which are small subclasses of the parallel complexity class NC. In the restrictive case of bipartite graphs, our maximum matching result improves upon the recent result of Eppstein and Vazirani, where they show an NC bound for constructing perfect matching in general single crossing minor free graphs.

Abstract:This paper connects the following three apparently unrelated topics: an epistemic framework fighting logical omniscience, a class of generalized graphs without the arities of relations, and a family of non-normal modal logics rejecting the aggregative axiom. Through neighborhood frames as their meeting point, we show that, among many completeness results obtained in this paper, the limit of a family of weakly aggregative logics is both exactly the modal logic of hypergraphs and also the epistemic logic of local reasoning with veracity and positive introspection. The logics studied are shown to be decidable based on a filtration construction.
